Yes probably a good idea the computer was so old that I recycled it. The
problem maybe left though it should have little effect on anyone more
than 12 years after it's launch.

Title:
[M4] Dell Inspiron 8000 shows split display on LiveCD

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-ati” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  [Problem]
On LiveCD boot, desktop is split into several unequally sized overlapping
areas on the screen.  Works okay with -vesa at 800x600.

  [Tested with]
Live cd of Ubuntu 8.04 ( Hardy Heron ) and Ubuntu 8.10 Alpha 4 and Beta 1 (
Intrepid Ibex )

  Dell Inspirion 8000
Processor: Intel PIII mobile 900\700Mhz speedstep, MMX SSE
  Cache: 256 KBytes
  Bus speed: 100 Mhz
  Chipset: Intel 815E
  Southbridge: Intel 82801 BA (ICH2-M)
  AGP version 2.0
ATI Mobility 128 M4 AGP 4X 16 MBytes RAM graphics adapter

  [Original Report]
I expected Ubuntu to load normally and be able to recognize the graphics
adapter without any problems since this is an old adapter this should not be a
problem since both new and old hardware should work with it anyway. Mobile
drivers are not as common as desktop variants but today laptops are outselling
desktops in most segments.I don't know what kind of experience Ubuntu would
have given me on this old low spec hardware since the live cd may not have
given it justice though i know that it would become e waste if it isn't
possible to use it. It is really loud and flaming hot but it could work as some
kind of server or backup to my other computers. Sure I'm mostly interested to
know that it can work rather than that i need it to work still support would be
a great thing.

Under the Safe Graphics mode Ubuntu seem to be able to display the
desktop correctly though not at full size\resolution. Rez 800x600
  pixel

What happened under the live cd was that the screen was corrupted with
screwed desktop where it was wrongfully positioned and where it look
like having a part of two desktops on one screen overlapping each
other, though in reality and after investigation the screen were
shopped up into three different fields and then thrown around so that
when the pointer moved from one field to another the pointer might
appear on a different part of the screen. The fields were not equally
sized there were two-three bigger ones and one-two smaller ones. The
CD was working very hard all the time as well as the CPU and many
times the computer seemed to freeze though this could be just the poor
performance of the live cd when i ran the hardware test in Gnome to
send you a report which I decided would be easier to write by myself
instead since it just didn't finish.

It is very hard to get a feel for Ubuntu when things don't work or
just barely works thus I want to say that improvements of the live CD
  is welcome.

Also the loading screen of Ubuntu have a progress bar that moves back
and forth this isn't really any helpful since you don't have any
visual clues about how much is left in the loading process the same
goes for when scanning hardware in the hardware test.

Testing with Ubuntu  8.10 Appha 4 Intrepid Ibex:
Both as Live CD and installed with Wubi:

I've now tried using the computer with Intrepid Ibex and some improvement
seem to have been made. For starters
This is probably a combination of improvements to ATI drivers and the design
of X.Org.

The result is not the same for the live CD and when Ubuntu is installed
through Wubi. Why this is I don't know.
Crashes with Intrepid Ibex Alpha 4 under live CD wasn't able too boot all the
way to GDM nor to the Ubuntu loading screen, This was displayed: Version number
of Busybox and then ash and something called Initramfs and a prompt to write
commands.

When Intrepid Ibex Alpha 4 was installed with Wubi several errors
appeared during boot up if this is the result of the unstable Alpha 4
or the physical CD I don't know.

Though the praphical boot up could finish I noticed screen corruption
during the Ubuntu boot screen where the progress indicator was
duplicated and\or half visible on other places than the right

Hey!
Thanks for the reply, this solved the issue..

Imho, I wouldn't say it's totally useless. Actually it would be good to
be able to change the treashold so that it's not sticking for ages at
the border..

Cheers!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 995570] [NEW] Wired PS/2 keyboard/mouse on Foxconn D270S Motherboard not responding in 12.04 Live CD or after install. Same hardware works flawlessly with 10.04

2012-05-07 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

My Wired PS/2 keyboard and mouse do not work in 12.04, either in a fresh
install or from the Live CD. A USB keyboard and mouse will work. The
PS/2 keyboard and mouse will work using the same hardware and a fresh
10.04 Ubuntu install or a fresh Windows 7 install.

So far I've tried running in the fresh 12.04 install:

sudo apt-get install

sudo apt-get upgrade

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

After the apt-get upgraded the first time, I now get to the point where
there are 0 items to be upgraded. Rebooted and still no PS/2
keyboard/mouse.

I've also tried adding the following lines to GRUB at boot time (the
PS/2 keyboard works in GRUB)

acpi=noirq

acpi=off

Neither setting made any difference.

The motherboard is a Foxconn D270S Atom based motherboard. Even more
interestingly, 12.04 recognizes the same PS/2 keyboard and mouse on a
separate Gigabyte AM3+ based motherboard. I only have this problem on
this particular motherboard with Ubuntu 12.04.

Update...

I dug out an old PS/2 mouse that does not use a PS/2 to USB adapter but
is directly wired for PS/2. Still no PS/2 keyboard or mouse after
reboot. Again, I only have this problem with this motherboard and 12.04
Ubuntu. Other motherboards work fine with 12.04 and this motherboard
works fine with 10.04.

Update 2...

I installed the 12.04 Server version. The text-based installer recognized the
keyboard without issue, but after the first boot into the installed OS, the
PS/2 keyboard would no longer respond. I tried installing Gnome on the Server
install and the PS/2 mouse and keyboard don't work in Gnome either.

I use dual monitor display. I switch to dual display in the Display and

dual mode is done correctly, but when I switch back to single mode (eg:
disable the external VGA), Xorg completly crashes, both of the monitors
show nesties, and no keyboard response (unable to switch to text console
with alt+ctrl+F1)

As I can see, other functionality of the OS continue work, I can connect
to my PC with SSH from another host. Xorg process uses 100% of CPU after
the crash, and the only thing that helps is killing the Xorg process by
SIGKILL.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 64bit completely freezes frequently

2012-05-07 Thread Hein
Hi,

I also have these random freezes (Pangolin 64 bit on a Acer 5720 laptop
with Nvidia Graphics and the restricted / Closed source Nvidia driver
installed).

I have noticed though that it is 'only' the screenoutput that freezes/
comes to a halt. Yes, the mouse cursor still moves, but nothing else
seems to happen. But as I was copying lots of files and my screen
freezed I did not touch my system until I was confident that the copy
process should be ready: in fact the control leds of my HD worked! and
my Wifi indicator also worked (I was also downloading a file).

After a while (led of HD and Wifi returned to idle) I switched off my
system and rebooted the system. The files were copied correctly and my
download was saved properly in my downloads directory.

I have also noticed that starting any browser (Firefox / Chrome) will
hang the system more quickly. I have also noticed that other 'screen-
intensive' software like e.g. shotwell or any fotoviewer will cause the
system to hang if used heavily.

This bug seems to be highly related to screen output and apparantly
nothing else. As Pdparo reports this on AMD Radeon as well (and even
without the closed source driver installed) it is most likely not a
problem directly caused by those drivers.

I have noticed that my screens sometimes 'flashes' (on/off, but then
very very fast) as it seems to refresh the screen.

If you google this subject you will find lots of posts in forums as
well: this seems to be a huge issue!

I hope this information will help killing this nasty bug asap!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 995164] [NEW] Samsung series 7 (700z5b variant) touchpad misbehaviour in 12.04

2012-05-07 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

The touchpad is able to register 1 finger clicks, 2 finger scroll, and
sometimes 4 finger tap.
2 finger click, 3 finger click etc are not recognized. (no right click is a
major problem in the gui that forces me to use an external mouse)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 946677] Re: UMS dri support missing for r200

2012-05-07 Thread Jens Garstka
I've the same problem with a Lenovo Thinkpad Z61p and ATI M56GL
[Mobility FireGL V5200] on Ubuntu 12.04. I'm not able to use the
proprietary driver, because the support for this chipset was abandoned
years ago. So I've to use the radeon driver.

Here is some info:

With the workaround from Carl I replaced all installed Mesa-Packages with:

libgl1-mesa-glx 7.11-0ubuntu3.2

libglu1-mesa-dev7.11-0ubuntu3.2
mesa-common-dev 7.11-0ubuntu3.2
mesa-utils 7.0.3~rc2-1ubuntu3

and configured the module in /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf with:
options radeon modeset=0

With a worse result:

It seems, that I modified /etc/default/grub long time ago. (I don't know
the reasons)

With radeon.modeset=1 everything works fine.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 995913] [NEW] White desktop, no launcher icons

2012-05-07 Thread Oliver R.
Public bug reported:

After a clean install of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS from CD I experience the
behavior described in bug #902670:

The main desktop area is dead white. No display of anything except the
pointer cursor.

The launcher bar shows in some kind of purple, but without icons.
Hovering the mouse over the launcher bar flashes 'tooltip' descriptions
of what should be there. These extend over the white desktop.

The top 'tray' bar shows with its proper icons.

Pressing Alt-F2, for example, leads to a window over the white desktop
area.

Immediately after logging in, I can see the correct background, but then
it's immediately covered with the white block.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 995913] Re: White desktop, no launcher icons

2012-05-07 Thread Oliver R.
After deinstalling xserver-xorg-video-nouveau everything works as
expected. So it seems to be a problem of the interaction of the driver
with the graphics card:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation NV31
[GeForce FX 5600] [10de:0312] (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])

I changed the target of this bug accrodingly.

Since it's a friend's computer, I won't be able to do more testing on
this.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 975689] Re: X freezes completely running google earth on xserver-xorg-video-intel - IPEHR: 0x7a000002

2012-05-07 Thread Chris Polderman
I am currently testing with the following every time I start X:

sudo intel_reg_write 0x2120 0x1206800

(intel_reg_write is located in the intel_gpu_tools package)

Workaround is mentioned in
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=47535

Curious if it fixes it as this bug is really bugging me :)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 926714] Re: continuous jerky mouse movements while using nouveau driver in 12.04

2012-05-07 Thread jones
me and a colleague also can confirm this problem on Lenovo T410. I found
another bug report with a similar symptom

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/746084
and also a link to a workaround:
http://souriguha.wordpress.com/2011/03/08/how-to-solve-problem-with-thinkpadkslowd-kworker-on-linux-kernel-2-35-2-36/

This seems to fix it for me. Maybe others can try that? The fix is

#echo N /sys/module/drm_kms_helper/parameters/poll

2012-05-07 Thread cbourbou
Upgraded to 12.04. Working a full day without any crashes.
Will observe this week, and if no further crashes occur, then we can conclude
that the problem was solved by the upgrade.
Will only come back if problem reoccurs

Cheers, Tino

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 745608] Re: [915GM] font corruption on Intel GMA900

2012-05-07 Thread cablop
The bad thing is those devices were working correctly with the previous
versions of Xorg... I think the problem is in the xorg thing and not
exactly in the driver... except that was a dormant failure never faced
before...

cablop, no does not look similar. But definitely there is more than one
 bug - we have found a bug's nest. :c)

I've meanwhile de-activated the Window Animations plugin (active by
default) via CCSM which does not really solve the problem, but at least
makes the desktop usable again...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 982485] Re: [regression] Nvidia 295.40: Unity 3D does not work at all with the new nvidia driver

@Ben A #127 Thanks for the link, everything seems to be working just
fine with new version 295.49. Better than fine since 3D loads fine and
doesn't seem to die on me. But need to test it more.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 64bit completely freezes frequently

2012-05-07 Thread David Lowes
I think this issue is related to compiz

I found a workaround for this issue:

When the computer freezes do the following:

1. CTRL+ALT+F1 (to get to the console)
2. login as your user.
3. sudo pkill compiz-redirector

Xwindows will appear to restart but the applications running under your
X will not be killed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 966744] Re: resume from suspend leaves me with black screen and a cursor

2012-05-07 Thread Ryan McClure
Seeing this and worse on a Lenovo ThinkPad T61 with nVidia Quadro 140M.

Anytime the lid is closed (whether this prompts suspend or not, whether
this locks the screen or not), re-opening the lid presents the desktop
view as it existed prior to closing the lid (if screen lock is not
enabled), with a cursor that moves, but with no click response
whatsoever.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 966744] Re: resume from suspend leaves me with black screen and a cursor

2012-05-07 Thread Ryan McClure
To add further clarification:

- I experience the effects described in the initial report *any time* the lid
is closed, with 100% reproducible results. Suspend, screen lock, etc. have no
extra effect. Close the lid, X is completely locked up other than the mouse
cursor.
- I only started experiencing these effects after upgrading from 11.10 to 12.04.
- I can switch to terminal mode (Ctrl Alt F1) and interact there.
- Switching back to X (Ctrl Alt F7) returns me to the locked-up screen. Mouse
still moves, but no interaction is possible.
- If the setting for automatically locking the desktop when the screen turns
off is enabled, I experience the black screen with mouse cursor result. If this
setting is not enabled, I see a frozen version of whatever was last on screen.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 985065]

2012-05-07 Thread Bryce Harrington
Looking at the code, no intermediate .xkb file is created to disk; it's
passed directly from memory to xkbcomp.

Btw, if you want to experiment more directly, you can snag
ubuntu-12.04-dvd-i386.iso.torrent (or ubuntu-12.04-dvd-i386.iso) from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/12.04/release/ and burn to a USB
stick using USB disk creator).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 985065]

2012-05-07 Thread Sergey V. Udaltsov
Unfortunately both xkm files are useless - they contain single us group
(xkbcomp foobar.xkm -xkb out.xkb).

Regarding the keymap file, in libxklavier:

if (xkl_debug_level  500) {
/* don't remove on high debug levels! */
if (remove(xkm_fn)

So I was wrong - the file stays with debug level 500.

But it really looks like a bug in Xorg server - it is against any rules,
to switch the groups. out_gnome.xkb IMNSHO clearly indicates that.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 966744] Re: resume from suspend leaves me with black screen and a cursor

2012-05-07 Thread Tomasz Melcer
Same effect on Thinkpad X61s (Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100).
Blank black screen with just mouse pointer visible after closing and
opening the lid back (no suspend necessary), happens maybe once in 20
times. Input works—i can move mouse pointer, also cursor changes when
over a text field (or I guess it's a text field, it's in the middle of
screen, where a password dialog should be).

exist in 64 bit Linux Mint 12 and 32 bit Mint LXDE (based off of *buntu
11.10).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 996083] [NEW] Click-drag on touchpad fails intermittently on 12.04, MacBook Pro 6, 2

2012-05-07 Thread Eric Harris-Braun
Public bug reported:

I have my touchpad configured with tap-to-click off. Frequently when
using my thumb to press down on the pad to make the click, and then I
touch my index finger to to the touchpad intending to drag (for example
when resizing a window or extending the selected range of text) the
mouse will jump to an absolute position on the screen (moving the
selected text or window egde with it) rather and simply extending the
selection or window size.

This behavior happens about 50% of the time. I have not been able to
find a solution to it or anything to help distinguish what the
difference is between when it does happen and when it doesn't.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993506] Re: nvidia kernel module fails to build on 3.4.x kernel [fatal error: asm/system.h: No such file or directory]

2012-05-07 Thread Ryan Thompson
There's no need to copy the header file into the 3.4 kernel. You just
have the patch the nvidia driver to add a preprocessor directive that
removes that line if the kernel version is 3.4 or higher.

2012-05-07 Thread flowermachine
i am affected by the same problem. i searched google and i found that
many distros are affected (gentoo, debian and arch at least) but they
solved it adding the locale settings in xorg.conf or evdev but my xorg
contains the locale already. this happened after upgrade to 12.04 but i
am not sure it is because precise evdev or even ubuntu. it's like a bug
in xorg itself.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 995715] Re: X defaulting keyboard locale to US at login after upgrading distribution

2012-05-07 Thread Montblanc
@flowermachine Are you using a wireless keyboard? And can you please add
your xorg.conf? I search Googled for this problem too and it seems
related at first, but people could solve it by adding locale settings to
10-evdev.conf or xorg.conf. I tried both proposed solutions, but it
didn't work so I'll keep the bug on Ubuntu and let users select a
different distribution if that happens to be the case. Also, are you
suggesting I should add the xserver-xorg package to the bug?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 968845] Re: bcm5974 touchpad doesn't work after S3 on MacBookAir

2012-05-07 Thread Chase Douglas
** Description changed:

  xorg-server SRU Justification
  =
  [Impact]
When a laptop is suspended, X disables the input devices. If X believes the
hardware has a button press when the device is disabled, it will not release
the button on resume and device enabling. With tap to click turned out, the
volatile mix of the touchpad and the LCD screen on lid closure can cause this
problem on suspend/resume.

  [Development Fix]
A one-line patch from upstream has been added to xorg-server
1.11.4-0ubuntu11. The patch can be seen in the SRU debdiff. It simply releases
the buttons when an input device is disabled.

  [Stable Fix]
The same one-line patch for the development fix has been made to xorg-server
1.11.4-0ubuntu10.2. Please see the attached xorg-server SRU debdiff.

  [Test Case]
Close and open the lid to perform a suspend resume cycle on a MacBook Air.
Repeat multiple times. Note that there will be issues until an SRU for
xserver-xorg-input-synaptics is available too.

  [Regression Potential]
Very minimal. The one-line change releases the buttons when an input device
is disabled. It is a trivial fix.
+
+ xserver-xorg-input-synaptics SRU Justification
+ ==
+ [Impact]
+ When a laptop is suspended, X disables the input devices. The entire state of
the device needs to be reset when the device is disabled so that it works
properly when re-enabled. Without this fix, the trackpad may do odd things like
behave as though there are active touches that no longer exist. This can
manifest as scrolling with one finger, no cursor motion, and right clicking
instead of left clicking.
+
+ [Development Fix]
+ Upstream 1.6.0 has two patches that fix this specific issue, among other bug
fixes. This has been uploaded to Quantal.
+
+ [Stable Fix]
+ The Quantal 1.6.0 update has been uploaded for Precise and is identical to
the Quantal package other than the Precise SRU version. The only changes from
the previous package to the 1.6.0 package are various bug fixes.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ Close and open the lid to perform a suspend resume cycle on a MacBook Air.
Repeat multiple times. Ensure the trackpad continues to function properly.`
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ Minimal. The fixes for this patch are small and well-contained. The fixes for
other issues in the upstream 1.6.0 release are also small and well-contained.

  Original Bug Report
  ===
I started seeing this immediately after installing updates that included
xserver-xorg-input-synaptics from 1.5.99.901-0ubuntu2 to 1.5.99.902-0ubuntu1
and rebooting.

When I initiate a suspend by closing the lid, after resuming the
touchpad no longer works at all. I can see a stream of events by
switching to a vt and running input events, and if I restart the display
manager the touchpad starts working again. I do not see this issue if I
initiate suspend from the menu, only when closing the lid.

On desktop, items that are moved down to below 1/3 of the screen are magically
disappearing behind an invisible horizon.
I am a noob when it comes down to videodrivers but is seems like although the
desktop and backdrop are rendered nicely full screen the items on it seem to be
rendered to a smaller field and get clipped when passing the border.
Resizing the desktop to another size and back again seem to solve this issue.

I'll paste my temporary workaround here for people with the same problem
and the same hardware while awaiting a fix.

workaround suitable for: NV34 (64MB) with laptopscreen 1024x768@60
workaround for nouveau bug that cuts off everything on screen
beneath a certain invisible horizon
resizing (and resizing back again) seems to be the only fix without disabling
render acceleration
workaraound tested (and works)

put the code below in a file, make it executable and put it in startup
applications in your desktop:

#!/bin/bash
xrandr --output LVDS-1 --mode 800x600 --panning 800x600
xrandr --output LVDS-1 --mode 1024x768 --panning 1024x768

2012-05-07 Thread ubunue
Public bug reported:

Thank you! The problem is this for me:

System does not recognize nvidia 8600GT graphics for the operating
system on i686 12.04, plus graphics not work well with the drivers:

(Web 295.49.i686.run nvidia + system + the current recommended).

I do not have 3D acceleration and some hang from time to time a program
called Colors or something.

Although the drivers are installed.

I am Spanish and I use the Google translator, sorry but
comprendeis.Saludos from Spain.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 994878] Re: glxgears very slow

2012-05-07 Thread Tormod Volden
There is no more DRI1 support in mesa (from version 8.x which is in
Ubuntu 12.04). That means these old cards for which there are no DRI2
drivers will not have hardware accelerated OpenGL. Unless you install
DRI1 drivers yourself... See
http://phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?70813-DRI1-drivers-for-
Ubuntu-12-04-(savage-mga-r128-tdfx-sis-unichrome)

** Package changed: xserver-xorg-video-savage (Ubuntu) = mesa (Ubuntu)
