[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 927288] Re: Xorg crash with qt4 apps using nvidia drivers

2012-05-12 Thread Riku Lääkkölä
Yay! Hussam's fix saved me too! Thanks a bunch!

My system:
Ubuntu 12.04 64bit
GeForce 210 with nvidia-current-updates, dualhead with TwinView

There was a lot of confusion with a similar bug that was fixed by not
using Xinerama. And also removing xfs removed the X server segfault, but
made Qt4 apps hang on startup.

Ok, i'm about to have my holiday soon, but i'll try to install one more time

try your solution. Will be cool to have 12.04 running.

I'll update here how it works!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 980058] Re: Sometimes get a white box instead of Lightdm after boot

2012-05-12 Thread gokul
I don't mean to scare you but the last time I saw such a crazy display
it was because my laptop cooling had failed. Is there any chance at all
that something of this nature has happened with you (coinciding with the
upgrade)? On a different occasion on a different system there was bug
with a viafb (driver?) and everything froze with not even ctrl+alt+del
possible. I had to blacklist it for that particular release and use the
default VESA driver

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993333] Re: [Sandybridge] Xorg freeze

2012-05-12 Thread Žygimantas Beručka
It seems I have bumped into another freeze even with this workaround
enabled. Well, I'll do more testing anyways...

I would like to help testing another kernel, but on my Samsung laptop
both 3.3.x and 3.4rc (at least mainline) versions have serious
regressions, since I have to use samsung-tools with easy-slow-down-
manager dkms from https://launchpad.net/~voria/+archive/ppa to make
brightness and cpu fan speed control keys actually work on my machine.
With 3.3.x brightness control is completely screwed and with 3.4rc it's
cpu fan speed control (it's the new mainline samsung-laptop kernel
driver that's buggy) that doesn't work and the fan is very noisy, and
since this is my production machine, I can't live without these features
at the moment. However, I'd would be more than happy to give a test-
drive to any 3.2.x version with newly backported i915 patches.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 811298] Re: Installing ATI fglrx drivers fails and system cannot boot

2012-05-12 Thread Luca Carlon
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected precise ubuntu

** Description changed:

Tried to install fglrx drivers but installation fails. jockey.log is
  attached.

After installation fails I rebooted as required, but system cannot boot
anymore. I only get a black screen. Tried with kernel linux-
  image-2.6.39-020639rc7-generic and linux-image-2.6.38-02063806-generic
(current kernel version linux-image-2.6.38-8-generic is not working on
my system). None of these worked. Tried with recovery mode but the
system does not boot as well and remains stuck during unpacking
  initramfs.

- To fix this I had to set kernel parameter nomodeset and uninstall fglrx
- manually. After that the system is restored.

I issued the requested command, but consider that now I'm running 12.04.
Still installation fails.

Perhaps I could workaround by using the fglrx closed-source driver
instead?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 998401] [NEW] HDMI shows only black/white static noise

2012-05-12 Thread Tim Kornhammar
Public bug reported:

More on the issue: For 1 second it shows the desktop, then goes into a
black/white static noise, no errors or debug info can tell what is
wrong. This is repeated every time I turn on the HDMI connection.

(hopefully this is the correct arena for this bug)

The problem has existed since I bought the computer but when I used
Ubuntu 11.04 and 11.10 I could work around the display issues by setting
the screen size to 4:3 and 1280x1024 px on my 40 Sony Bravia 1080p
screen.

Now in 12.04 that does not work any more, the only thing that does work
is by setting some options in xorg.conf and relying on the VGA
connector.

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
Release:12.04

$ aptitude show libdrm-intel1
Version: 2.4.32-1ubuntu1

For the moment Iäm trying if linux-image-3.4.0-1-generic with
edid_firmware loading solves the issue, it does not even though I have
tried a lot of different approaches. Loading the edid from windows does
not work either since it uses 1 edid cea extension.

In the logs I enabled as much as I could through xdiagnose (it set drm
debug to 0x14, I guess that is ok over 0x06 which was recommended on
intels debugging site). Even though I have looked in the logs I cannot
figure out what is causing the noise.

If you would like me to create the logs with the stock kernel I can, but
I don't think it will help much.

Possibly manually downloading 11.10 X packages and sudo dpkg -i --force-

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 980058] Re: Sometimes get a white box instead of Lightdm after boot

2012-05-12 Thread Michael Cobb
Thanks for the reply. The laptop is only 6 months old, so i'm not sure
if that would be a problem. My laptop seems to be running cooler since
upgrading to 12.04. But I'll look into it though.

** Summary changed:

- Sometimes get a white box instead of Lightdm after boot
+ Sometimes see vertical bands, artifacts across screen after boot

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 980058] Re: Sometimes see vertical bands, artifacts across screen after boot

2012-05-12 Thread Michael Cobb
** Description changed:

- WHAT HAPPENED INSTEAD:
- ==
- Since upgrading from Ubuntu 11.10 to 12.04, while booting, Plymouth is
displayed fine, there are no problems there. The problem occurs when Plymouth
finishes and Lightdm should start. 9 times out of 10, Lightdm starts fine and
everything works OK.
+ Since updating from 12.04 Beta 1 to 12.04 (Final) (I went from 11.10 to
+ 12.04 Beta 1 before that via a clean install), while booting, GRUB is
+ displayed fine, and Ubuntu begins to boot fine. It's only when Plymouth
+ is displayed (which happens fairly late into boot for me) that I start
+ to experience problems.

- However, occasionally instead of Lightdm starting, the screen shows a
- white box in the centre of the screen, surrounded by black bands.
+ Most of the time, Plymouth is shown fine, and everything is great.
+ However, occasionally Plymouth is shown garbled, there's little blobs of
+ colour (Sorry I can't provide much information because Plymouth is only
+ shown for a little while during my boot).

- moving the mouse leaves vertical artefacts on the screen, which makes me
- think that X/Lightdm hasn't froze, but I see no HDD activity when I
- enter my password and press enter (Maybe Lightdm crashes, leaving X (and
- mouse input) working fine?).
+ Then I see vertical bands of colour, it kind of looks like my display
+ has been stretched vertically and the whole display is 1px tall. (I have
+ posted some videos showing the behaviour below).

- Switching to any TTY clears the screen, however the only thing visible
- is a blinking vertical band (which moves along as I type my user-name
- and password to try to log in through a TTY)
+ I can log in, log out, switch to TTY's - do whatever, but the screen
+ still has vertical bands on it. Moving the mouse causes the bands to
+ change/update.

- From here I run:
- sudo shutdown -h now
- and enter my password again.
+ Switching to any TTY shows a blinking vertical line, which moves along
+ as I type commands, but it's impossible to see them (you can just see
+ the blinking cursor)

- The computer then restarts and is back to normal.
+ I can SSH into the computer and collect any logs if they are needed.

- The next time this happens I will try running:
- sudo pkill x
- To see if that can cause X to restart and show normally.
+ I then force shut-down the laptop and restart and everything works fine.

- I will attach a photo I took, and some mockups of the behavior in the
- TTY terminal.
-
- WHAT I EXPECTED TO HAPPEN:
- =
- I expected the computer to show Lightdm and allow me to log in normally and
use my computer
- (which it does do, nearly most of the time)
+ The only kernel command I have added is acpi_backlight=vendor (to be
+ able to set the backlight brightness)

I found an earlier bug which I reported when it worked, no static
noise. Adds the link here because it shows some information on packages
and logs when it did not behave in this manner.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 998414] [NEW] Black screen Sony HMZ-T1 (HDMI) with Intel drivers, 12.04

2012-05-12 Thread Gerard Toonstra
Public bug reported:

I've installed Ubuntu Pangolin 12.04 on a Mac Mini and sometimes use a Sony
HMZ-T1 as the display device. On Ocelot everything worked fine, but since
Pangolin I get no X screen, not even the tty's on F1/F2. When the mac starts
up, I'm getting 720p image output from the bootloader and grub. Then when X is
started, the screen goes black and the video glasses report No signal.
Both kernels work on my TV for this HDMI port, so it's just the goggles.

I switched to a previous kernel (3.0) on Pangolin and there I do get a
display! I've captured the Xorg.0.log from both sessions. The 3.2
kernel boot where the display doesn't work doesn't report an error. I've
diff'd both Xorg.logs and the only differences look like the kernel
versions and some other input device processing:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 64bit completely freezes frequently

2012-05-12 Thread Hein
After a large update yesterday including Compiz I hoped we would have
some solution. Nope. My system still randomly freezes and my screen
flashes like a strobe light in the discotheque sometimes.

What really bothers me is that if you google you see that lots and lots
of Pangolin users suffer from this bug (over 200.000 hits) yet this bug
hasn't been assigned yet. Solution to be far far away this probably
means, or we must hope that some update will bring the solution
accidentily.

If this is the way Ubuntu works these days, I'd rather spent a hundred
bucks and get that so called crappy Windows 7: it at least doesn't
freeze a twenty or thirty time a day. Or I will move away to another
Linux distro that takes it's users a bit more serious.

For now to have a working system I will probably downgrade to 11.10.

I think it's mainly due to the fact that Ubuntu has been moving away
from mainstream development with Unity and multiple monitor support.
Don't get me wrong: I like the Unity concept and I also hope for a good
multiple monitor solution for Linux, but I'd rather see efforts bundled
instead of forked.

For now: please please please developers dive into this nasty bug. We
(the users) are suffering: we need a GUI that works!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 975689] Re: X freezes completely running google earth on xserver-xorg-video-intel - IPEHR: 0x7a000002

2012-05-12 Thread jsevi83
I tested googleearth after running sudo intel_reg_write 0x2120
'0x1206800' and still had the same problem. Since I'm running ubuntu
64bit, I tried to install libgl1-mesa-dri:i386 and the problem is gone,
maybe that helps others users...

For me it's enough now. I'm going to downgrade to 11.10/ reinstall
11.10. That version at least worked! Just got 5 times a hanging system
in just 20 minutes: this is ridiculous!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 998414] Re: Black screen Sony HMZ-T1 (HDMI) with Intel drivers, 12.04

2012-05-12 Thread Gerard Toonstra
Just adding some info. When I add the nomodeset flag to the kernel
boot parameters, the screen now appears, but fixed in 800x600 mode. I
also get access to the tty's on F1..Fx. It's starting in low-graphics
mode still though and cannot be reconfigured to 720p.

I experience the same problem on 2 machines, one being Lenovo ThinkPad

Both have fresh installs of Ubuntu Precise 12.04.

Thank you!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 64bit completely freezes frequently

2012-05-12 Thread Daniel Ferradal
I tried compiling the kernel from kernel.org, version 3.3.5, it took a
while but it also freezed completely (machine completely unresponsive,
no mouse or ping or ctrl+alt+f1 out of it) same as with ubuntu stock
kernel.

I am including my syslog of the whole evening with the two different
kernels (ubuntu, kernel.org 3.3.5, but since the freeze is sudden never
gets anything substantial logged).

** Attachment added: syslog with several freezes, no errors

2012-05-12 Thread Daniel Ferradal
I must say I have installed 12.04 succesfully in 3 other machines with
no freezes, so maybe this is happening on fairly new type of hardware?

My results in different boxes:
* Lenovo T400 laptop, Intel Integrated, 32bit install, successful
* Intel Core Duo E6600, 32bit install, Nvidia Gforce 210, succesful
* Zotac AD02, 64bit install, ATI integrated [Radeon HD 6310], successful
* Intel  I7-950, 64bit install, Geforce GTX470, random total lockup/freezes.

I can confirm this bug on my setup as well, 12.04 x64 with an Nvidia

manifests itself every one or two hours. This is an absolute
showstopper, and really needs to be an extremely high priority.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 968536] Re: Natural Scrolling broken with software-center in 12.04

2012-05-12 Thread Chascon
It seems that fix is _only_ for trackpads.

@Luke
... xinput list-props will give you something like this:
Code:
Device 'SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad':
   Device Enabled (133): 1
...
   Synaptics Two-Finger Pressure (269): 282
   Synaptics Two-Finger Width (270): 7
   Synaptics Scrolling Distance (271): 112, 112
   Synaptics Edge Scrolling (272): 0, 0, 0
   Synaptics Two-Finger Scrolling (273): 1, 1
...

The interesting bit being the scrolling distance; replace that with a
negative value (with xinput set-int-prop), and you get inverted
scrolling.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 968536] Re: Natural Scrolling broken with software-center in 12.04

2012-05-12 Thread Luke Hoersten
@chascone thanks for the tip but that doesn't work.

$ xinput list-props 11 | grep Scrolling Distance
Synaptics Scrolling Distance (262): -222, -222

$ xinput --set-prop 11 262 -222 -222

(set-int-prop is deprecated)

This successfully reverses the direction of scrolling for things like
Google Chrome but not for the GTK3 apps listed above (Software Center,
Settings controls, etc).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 988008] Re: screen locks up with mouse cursor moving

2012-05-12 Thread Eugene San
** Package changed: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) = linux (Ubuntu)

** Summary changed:

- screen locks up with mouse cursor moving
+ [precise] screen locks up with mouse cursor moving

** Description changed:

screen locks up with mouse cursor moving
  Started somewhere around beta1.
In my case triggered reliaebly by running NX client (background or
foreground) but only to machines on LAN.

Unfortunelty problem was mis-identified by ubuntu-bug as an duplicate
therefor reported manually.
  Detailed crash report attached

  intel_gpu_top showed:
  render busy: 70%:
  bitsream busy: 100%
  blitter busy: 100%
  GAM: 100%:
No other tasks appeared and GPU got very hot.

+ Update:
+ Using backported from Quantal Kerenl (3.4.0-1.x) solves the problem.
