[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 998310] Re: .Xmodmap file makes xorg temporarily reach high cpu usage (90%-100%) after resume or when coming back from tty to X session

2012-06-26 Thread avlas
Thanks for the info...

Playing a bit with it, I realized that the issue is actually related to
using a .Xmodmap file. When I remove it from $HOME the issue is gone but
it comes back as soon as I create a new .Xmodmap (which is important for
me to get catalan characters in a us keyboard).

** Summary changed:

- xorg temporarily reaches high cpu usage (90%-100%) after resume
+ .Xmodmap file makes xorg temporarily reach high cpu usage (90%-100%) after
resume or when coming back from tty to X session

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1010947] Re: Gnome screen crashed after update

2012-06-26 Thread AFOH
I had more than enough reasons to mark this as a security bug. It was
what I saw to be its potential for intrusion and exploitation. I'm
positive if you only considered any given bug's security status
according to their confirmed "evidence" of enabling users for attacks
you'd be missing on the most vulnerable, critical access points, which
so explains why I reported this bug immediately.

On the other hand, the Bryce Harrington thought the information provided
was not sufficient for a proper report. I believe I provided more than
sufficient information for a well-prepared developer to trace its
origins, else Mr. Harrington is far too incompetent to understand so.

I suggest for you to locate a Latin American developer and forward this
report to him; I'm of the mind that he would see more than sufficient
information herein, and might in turn know how to fix it.

This keyboard was obtained from IBM. This is not the lenovo keyboard designed
for personal use. It is for servers only and do not support other advanced
functions other than basic mouse/keyboard.
I suppose it should be closed, for it is a hardware limitation.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 987933] [NEW] Ubuntu 12.04 shutdown hangs with proprietary nVidia driver

2012-06-26 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Basically, if I shutdown soon after login on, my system shuts down and powers
off ok but it I use the system for any prolonged time and try to shutdown, it
hangs at the very last minuites. Based on the advice from Bug #985471, I
modified /etc/default/grub,
changing
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="reboot=pci quiet splash"

Having done this, I am able to reboot my system however long I have been using
it. So my current shutdown routine is, first reboot and wait for the login
screen, then from there shutdown.
Thanks for your help.

I'll be happy to add any information I can, but there isn't much I can
do add. From http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Reporting

Step-by-step directions for how you reproduced it - Install 12.04 and try to
boot
When was your system last working properly? - 11.10
photo of the screen - The screen is black and the system doesn't respond to
keyboard or mouse movements.

If any other logfiles or tests are necessary I will try to help.

Broken here with x64 12.04 too. It's *extremely* annoying as I have a

broken xmodmap.

Thomas Albright, if you're still reading this, I don't suppose you can
post more information on your workaround so that everyone else who runs
into this doesn't have to go through an hour of figuring out what to do.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 997858] Re: Plugging TV by HDMI

2012-06-26 Thread Bryce Harrington
I can't make sense of your bug report.

If you mean your TV is cropping the image, then your TV probably is
doing overscan, which is typical of TVs. You have to turn it off on the
TV.

Beyond that, you haven't filed your bug report properly so there are no
logs, config files, etc. so can't really say what your trouble is.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-06-26 Thread Kevin LeBlanc
Michael:

To clarify, it is the 3.2.0-23-lowlatency kernel that doesn't crash.
The generic kernel does.

The exact procedure is to go into Synaptic Package Manager (install it
if you don't have it), search for all instances of 3.2.0-25 and have it
removed. The next thing to do is to search for the 3.2.0-23 lowlatency
kernel, taking care to avoid the PAE kernel unless you're running a 64
bit system., and install:

linux-headers-3.2.0-23
linux-headers-3.2.0-23-lowlatency
linux-image-3.2.0-23-lowlatency

You will definitely need to restart after that. After you restart,
check the 'System' tab on your System Monitor. If everything went well,
it should say this: "Kernel Linux 3.2.0-23-lowlatency".

It is absolutely imperative that I stress that it is ONLY THE LOW
LATENCY KERNEL that hasn't crashed on me. So take care to only install
the low latency kernel and not the generic kernel.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 794474] Re: latitude e6420 screen flickering (sandy bridge intel video card)

2012-06-26 Thread Georg Grabler
For your information:
This bug exists obviously on more machines than one, but not on all Dell
Latitude e6420 machines, but on some others.
I guess it has something to do with the video card installed, anyway, I already
filed a bug report back in 3/2011.

Upstream bug:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=35812

I'm currently on trying to reproduce the error for Daniel Vetter on
3.5-rc4. If it is still reproducable, we will try to track down this
bug.

Background:
In times pre-3.2, this happened during KMS.
It did not happen with kernel 3.2.8 (no clue why!).
I am not sure about 3.3, since I never used 3.3 (did stay with 3.2.8 - it
worked).
Since 3.4 it happens (for me) only on X login, not at KMS stage!
What KMS and the X-Login (on KDE) have in common? A resolution change. KMS
changes the screen resolution, KDM is displayed afterwrads (in a wrong
resolution), and after login it does set the resolution to the chosen one,
where I personally get stripes today.

I am not using ubuntu but chakra, so this is definitely no ubuntu issue,
but an upstream one. I tried that with arch and fedora as well - same
results.

The situation has gotten better, but it seems the bug we formerly had in
the KMS is now in the X11 resolution change. Even though, I could not
reproduce it (yet) changing resolution after I logged in successfully.

@Screen Flickering:
This is NOT an issue, the screen won't break! I have had it running having the
stripes for a day(!), and ye, it did flicker a lot afterwards. If you leave
your laptop alone, shut down, it will not flicker after a few hours of resting.

Since this bug got more attention now again by the intel guys (always
very helpful and nice I gotta' say), I hope we can track it down for
future kernel versions.

Hope this helps to accept the bug report and get it to [upstream]. Maybe
some others are willing to help as well.

2012-06-26 Thread Bryce Harrington
The problem is you're using the r128 driver, which is not widely used.
Really you should work with upstream on all of those issues, it's not
going to be a priority in Ubuntu. But I'll refile your bug report and
leave it open in case someone else wants to work on it.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does
not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you
are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are
having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if
you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1015135] Re: update

@Dave, "EQ overflowing" usually just means X could no longer write to
the GPU, so it's likely a GPU hang (i.e. a kernel bug). Follow the GPU
hang troubleshooting directions from wiki. But in a case like this,
where the user doesn't provide a description other than 'dunno', we
generally just discard the bug report as non-actionable.

Actually, on Fedora the shortcut for playing is Ctrl+Space and it works
just right.
It's simple, obvious and ok for everyone.

I've just tested the patch from Sebastian, i.e. removing the «include
"level5(rctrl_switch)"» from the current "precise-proposed" package. The
behavior is Ok for me:
– Right Ctrl works
– Rhythmbox Ctrl-Space works
– Nbsp is available (on level 4).

Now, what is the procedure to cook the patch of the patch?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 987153] Re: Xorg freeze

2012-06-26 Thread Raman Gupta
For the problem I am having, I don't have any issue if my monitors do
not go to sleep i.e. I turn off the KDE option to turn off the monitors
when the system is idle (I think KDE is turning off DPMS in the
background).

I also do not have any issue if I turn off KDE desktop effects before
the monitors go to sleep, so it appears to be something related to Xorg
being in a mode that uses the 3D part of the video driver i.e. OpenGL
etc.

One last point -- I think you are right about the root cause being the
video card going into power save mode, since if the monitors go to sleep
but I wake them up within a few seconds, there is no issue. It is only
if I wake them up after some time that the EQ overflows.

Does anyone know how to configure the ATI driver to not put the video
card in powersave mode, even if the monitors are off?

Hi batu,

I tried your workaround but it did not solve the underlying problem for me.
The Alt-Tab window switcher from ccsm works now with a lot of windows but
Super-W still produces the crash with error message

intel_do_flush_locked failed: No space left on device

in the .xsession-errors file.

I have an Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller

with Super-W.

Right. Kdm. Should it not be running gdm?

How do I switch display managers from the command line? presumably
something in /etc/ or etc/init?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 952521] Re: Screen blanking and dpms can't be turned off

2012-06-26 Thread Jeremy LaCroix
I am having the exact same problem on one of my two laptops.

First, please note I am not using Ubuntu or Kubuntu. I am running Arch
Linux. I know this isn't an Arch Linux bug reporter, but wanted to note
that this might be an upstream issue due to my having the problem on a
different distribution.

Another thing worth noting is that my laptop with Intel graphics doesn't
seem to be bothered by this bug (though I only use that laptop around
once a week or less). My Nvidia laptop has this issue.

So I'm thinking:
Either this is a KDE bug, or an Nvidia bug.

Are you guys running Nvidia?

Although we use different distributions, our interests are the same, so
I hope we can pinpoint the issue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-06-26 Thread Kevin LeBlanc
UPDATE: The generic kernel is a bust. It froze again when testing the
hard drive with the Disk Utility, and this morning it froze while I was
reading a fanfiction via Firefox - nothing more. At any rate, the
3.2.0-23-lowlatency kernel has been very reliable and hasn't frozen on
me once.

So all of you Ubunters looking for a cure for what ails you and your
freeze-happy compy, I've had absolutely wonderful results from the
3.2.0-23-lowlatency kernel. Disregard what I said about the generic
kernel.

If you want to know why I think this is, I have no idea. I know more
about popcorn kernels than Linux kernels.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1016054] Re: travamento

2012-06-26 Thread Dave Lentz
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

Nothing specific, you took that the wrong way, as said I was trying to
have a feeling of what percentage of the users it concerns and what is
their usecase, I didn't say it was fine to bug anyone, but understand
that any of the suggested solution so far do bother a part of the
userbase, so we are stucked in choising what part is the smallest one or
what issue is easier to work around

> Since "2.5-1ubuntu1.1 is included in precise-updates now", I guess

No, it's not, as pointed before that patch and behaviour was default in
Ubuntu in the lucid LTS and for years and we get very few negative
feedback about it, I'm sorry it's impacting you directly but that
doesn't make it an issue that impact every french user...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1017925] [NEW] Xorg.conf edits by amdconfig break X Server

2012-06-26 Thread Mark909
Public bug reported:

Hi. I have installed the closed source AMD Drivers, as adviced by Jockey
(Additional Drivers GUI).

As stated in the AMD Catalyst installation guide, I run (I have a dual
GPU 5970): sudo amdconfig --initial --adapter=all

Doing so generates a xorg.conf file in /etc/X11/. The xorg.conf generated by
this command configures two monitors, but I connected only one.
After that I reboot and log back in. If I move the mouse pointer on the far
right of the monitor it disappears because xorg thinks that there is another
monitor, as stated in the xorg.conf file.

If I run AMD Catalyst Control Center, it correctly finds that I have
only one monitor connected and modifies the xorg.conf accordingly. It
seems legit to me but the system hangs with a purple screen before the
login screen.

I think it's a regression because I have installed the proprietary
driver as suggested by Jockey.

Thanks.

I'll attach the two xorg.conf files.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1017927] [NEW] Display and sound freezes every few days

2012-06-26 Thread barna
Public bug reported:

Since I have upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04, my notebook freezes in every few
days. If something is playing in a music player, that hangs also (as if
the needle was jumping back continuously on an LP disk. When switching
to fglrx, this problem does not show up (although I have not used fglrx
long enough to be sure about this).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1017829] Re: No hardware rendering

2012-06-26 Thread Timo Aaltonen
you've installed fglrx manually, and it has replaced files on your
system. In addition to that, fglrx doesn't support your gpu.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 995715] Re: X defaulting keyboard locale to US at login after upgrading distribution if a Logitech Unifying Receiver is plugged in

2012-06-26 Thread vetmode
This probably isn't too helpful but I guess it's better than nothing:
I now use an old bluetooth keyboard because the locale then Switches back to
normal. Funny enough it even works with the unifying K360 afterwards. Seems
like the bluetooth one flips a switch somewhere. Any logs you might want from
me with this?
