[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 480891] Re: [G45] Xorg does not use full resolution of monitor (Intel)

2012-07-06 Thread IanG
I am also experiencing this for an Iiyama S103MT Vision Master 503 in
Precise Pangolin. No full resolution, only one which defaults to laptop
and results in almost unreadable black taskbar script. We're using
proprietary nvidia driver, but the standard Ubuntu installation produces
the exact same results

Also the launcher is stuck.

This CRT monitor is still perfectly adequate and it is intended to keep
it going as part of a green initiative.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1010438] Re: xorg crashed during play of firefox embedded flash movie

2012-07-06 Thread G.C. Hassink
Problem seems to be solved for now. After some reading on other fora, I
uninstalled nouveau display driver (via softwarecentre) which was supposed to
cause conflict with the Intel drivers, and therefore maybe also with radeon
drivers
http://lcardinaals.wordpress.com/2012/04/25/ubuntu-12-04-myunity/
http://thorwil.wordpress.com/2012/05/16/fun-with-graphics-card-drivers-in-ubuntu-12-04/
But I also received some xorg related updates.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 986371] Re: Regression in nvidia-graphics-drivers causes freezes in combination with gnome-screensaver

2012-07-06 Thread madbiologist
Peter - that's great news! And the x-updates PPA is nowhere near as
risky as the xorg-edgers PPA.

Now I am wondering why you were successful in installing newer drivers
and Sebastian was unsuccessful in doing so. If you can help him figure
that out that would be fantastic.

BTW, according to Canonical the desktop version of Ubuntu 10.04 will be
supported until April 2013 and the server version will be supported
until April 2015.

I stumbled upon same issue with PowerBook 5,6 / kubuntu 11.04
It does not seem obvious from the error complaining about exports (like library
functions missing), but you can add boot option radeon.modeset=1 to enable KMS,
AIGLX and other fun.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-07-06 Thread Jeremy LaCroix
@Steve Riley: No offense, but this is ridiculous. You're assuming that
just because the symptoms are a bit different, that we're dealing with
more than one bug. It's not out of the question to consider that one bug
could affect different systems different ways. This line of thinking may
be what's holding you back and the reason why no results have been
achieved. There is one thing in common though, a kernel update fixes it
for everyone here that has tried it, regardless of differing symptoms.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1021019] Re: generic wireless mouse not working

2012-07-06 Thread Joseph Salisbury
Can you provide some information on the status of the patch with regards
to getting it merged upstream? Has it been sent upstream, what sort of
feedback has it received, is it getting applied to a subsystem
maintainer's tree, etc?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1021019] Re: generic wireless mouse not working

2012-07-06 Thread Joseph Salisbury
We generally ask bug reporters to first request that the driver or patch
be added to the upstream kernel. This can be done by mailing the Linux
Kernel Mailing List or opening a bug at bugzilla.kernel.org.

People affected by this bug are probably wondering why the kernel team
doesn't just add the patch and fix it. The reason is that the kernel
team is reluctant (not opposed) to apply any patch/driver to a kernel
that is not from upstream. Applying patches and adding drivers that
don't come from upstream add greatly to the support of the kernel as
other upstream patches/drivers may touch the same area as the non-
upstream patch and may prevent them from applying cleanly.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1021770] [NEW] USB Keyboard works occasionally

2012-07-06 Thread palimmo
Public bug reported:

A few days ago I bought a SL640 Hama USB keyboard to use on my laptop with
Ubuntu 12.04. But I'm having problems, as it works one time out of 10! On my
laptop I have also Win7 in dual boot. And I have to say that it always works on
it.
And on my girlfriend's laptop, with Win Vista, always works.
 Here are some infos:

~$ lsusb Bus 006 Device 003: ID 04d9:1503 Holtek Semiconductor, Inc.
Shortboard Lefty

As you can see, the OS recognized it but the keyboard doesn't react ...
even the Caps Lock and Num Lock keys don't blink. Regarding the legacy
support (useful for GRUB), I have found no entry in the BIOS. But I'm
not interested in it. I just want to use it in Ubuntu. However, in GRUB
it works sometimes.

Surprisingly, now I have booted my laptop: the usb keyboard hasn't
worked in GRUB but it has worked since the ubuntu login! And now I'm
typing with it. Well.. it means that Ubuntu has the right drivers and
they work. But how to load them always correctly?

thanks in advance!

-- Another example.
After several plug/unplug actions, now it works.

Here dmesg:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1010683] Re: ATI Resume from Suspend leads into black screen (VGA_Switcheroo)

2012-07-06 Thread Octavian

** Also affects: linux via
   http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=37762

   Status: Unknown

** Description changed:

  I have a HP Touchsmart 2 (tm2).
This Notebook has 2 Graphiccars: Intel (DIS) and ATI (IGD):

Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI
Manhattan [Mobility Radeon HD 5400 Series]

If i use the Intel-Graphiccard, everything works well, i can suspend and
resume as often as i'd like.
+ Edit: As soon as I switched (switch to ATI and back to Intel, the below
problem happens on Intel-GPU too).
If i use the ATI-Graphiccard i can suspend (wich takes a longer time than
with the Intel one) however I can't resume. I get a blank/black screen and
can't change brightness. Plus I can't switch to any tty.

I've tried this instructions to find an error:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend
but it dosn't seem to bring relevant informations (however, I'll add the
dmesg.txt to this bugreport)

PS: to switch between graphiccards, I use vga_switcheroo and i have
  vanilla-ubuntu, no third party software.

Xorg log from boot

My dual radeon HP DV6 laptop fails to re-enable the display when
resuming from S3. The computer otherwise seems to work normally and I
can type blind to reboot the machine. The cards present are

$ lspci -vnn |grep VGA
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: ATI Technologies Inc M880G [Mobility
Radeon HD 4200] [1002:9712] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: ATI Technologies Inc Redwood [Radeon
HD 5600 Series] [1002:68c1] (rev ff) (prog-if ff)

VGAswitcheroo works as intended and I can switch cards, but I get the
display turned off upon resume no matter which card is active before
suspend. I'm attaching a syslog from boot, a syslog from after resuming,
the X log and the output of acpidump.

The bug is present with all kernels at least from 2.6.38 to 3.1. I've
been told by another user with the same laptop that fglrx does re-enable
the display when resuming (although I haven't tried it myself).

This bug was originally filed as

https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=37762

but since it seems unclear when the kernel bugzilla will be back up, I'm
re-filing the bug here.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 763422] Re: [i965] idle black screen plus other issues Ubuntu 11.04

2012-07-06 Thread Darcy Parks
I have been experiencing the same problem, first with 11.10 and now with
12.04. i965.

It has happened a few times today and I tried the following commands
from VT1:

export DISPLAY=:0; xset dpms force off; sleep 5; xset dpms force on

The commands appeared to run without error but it did not fix the
problem. As before, the only option is pkill X or to reboot.

Not a true fix, but should suppress these notifications.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-07-06 Thread Steve Riley
Nothing's holding me back...not sure what you mean by that?

If you look through all the comments in this bug, you'll see that the
variety of systems and symptoms is so varied that it's difficult for the
developers to find anything common. Some people experience complete and
total freezes, where every process stops: no mouse, no clock, no ability
to SSH into the box, total dead-ness. Others experience something less
than a total freeze: mouse still moves, can access via SSH. Some people
have Intel graphics. Some people have AMD or nVidia. Some people seem to
relate the freeze to USB peripheral activity.

Also, I don't think it's correct that the kernel update has fixed the
problem for *everyone*. I've tried every single kernel, and all of them
have frozen up at one point.

Given all that, it's reasonable to state that this particular bug report
is probably not too useful anymore. I'm not denying that there's a
problem. But I can't believe that a single bug is responsible for
everything that's been reported here.

2012-07-06 Thread Gregor Larson
In previous comment for for Wheezy, the debian xorg-server source
package was version: 2:1.12.1.902-1

I was also able to test the patch on Ubuntu Precise, source package
version: 2:1.11.4-0ubuntu10.3. On the same Acer netbook (Intel video),
it fixed xrandr panning with Unity 3D.

ps. The patch file did not apply (with patch program) to the Ubuntu

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1021924] [NEW] Multiple Displays not working on Core i7 3770S + Intel DQ77MK motherboard

2012-07-06 Thread Rodney Dawes
Public bug reported:

I have an Intel DQ77MK motherboard, which has 2 DVI connectors, and a
Core i7 3770S IvyBridge CPU. Under Ubuntu 12.04, the multiple display
support does not work, and I am stuck with a single display. The second
screen only shows all pixels as 100% red. Enabling the second screen in
Displays in System Settings does allow me to move windows and the mouse
cursor to that screen, though I cannot actually see anything on it, as
everything is red. For now I have had to force it to mirror displays, to
avoid moving things to the second screen.

Also, on the daily live image for Quantal, the system appears to freeze
when X starts, and I am left with the primary screen being black, and
the secondary screen being full red. The plymouth framebuffer is a fuzzy
green image, and everything turns black when X comes up.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1021924] Re: Multiple Displays not working on Core i7 3770S + Intel DQ77MK motherboard

2012-07-06 Thread Maarten Lankhorst
Sorry, installing nvidia is not going to work for now. I'm working with
airlied on prime support for it though, so if lucky it lands in quantal
or 12.04.2. Things will probably start working in x1.13 but it will
probably still need manual configuration then.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1021924] Re: Multiple Displays not working on Core i7 3770S + Intel DQ77MK motherboard

2012-07-06 Thread Rodney Dawes
Sorry, there is no Nvidia hardware in this system now. The binary
drivers were left around from previous hardware (recently upgraded to
this current system). After purging them, and rebooting, the same
secondary screen issue ensues, and GL things are very crashy. Also,
taking a screenshot does result in the secondary display contents
appearing correctly in the PNG.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-07-06 Thread szbab
Hello
Sorry for my English (translated by Google)
I built and sold computers mainly Ubuntu.

Many comments have nothing to do with the bug that affects us.
(black screen etc ...) Some wifi and Ethernet cards can also cause the system
freeze.
But then these are the new processor with the new chipset!

Finally here's what I can bring as track.
The gel system is done primarily using the browser (firefox, chrome ...)
Sometimes evince!
More mouse or keyboard, so brutally shutdown.

The equipment:
Gigabyte, Asus, Asrock, MSI chipset B75 H77 Z77
Processor Ivy Bridge and Sandy Bridge (no problem for them under the former Z68
chipset B75 H67)
The problem is so new motherboard chipset backwards compatible Sandy and Ivy
bridge and use the integrated graphics card (HD2000, HD2500, HD3000, HD4000)

I do not understand what Canonical can not afford to buy a motherboard and a
processor of the third generation to see for themselves the bug.
And corrected as quickly as possible.

2012-07-06 Thread Adam Conrad
Hello Manoj, or anyone else affected,

Accepted xorg-server into precise-proposed. The package will build now
and be available at http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-
server/2:1.11.4-0ubuntu10.4 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed
repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to
enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update
out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please change the bug tag from
verification-needed to verification-done. If it does not, change the
tag to verification-failed. In either case, details of your testing
will help us make a better decision.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 958279] Re: FGLRX DPMS support totally broken, fails to wake up the monitor after putting it to sleep.

2012-07-06 Thread Kim Botherway
Hi,

* I leave a low voltage LED display plugged in to the card using the
DisplayPort connection and that's permanently turned on.
*I'm using Debian packaged fglrx version 12-6-2/8.98.2.
* DPMS (thank you for that tip), KDE (4.8.4)'s power management and screen
saver are turned off.

About 50% of the time the LED screen is still showing my desktop when I
get up in the mornings or come home from work; the rest of the time it's
blank. Sometimes you can turn your back on the screen for just a few
minutes and its blank.

Of those blank screens 20% of them don't recover; so far I'm on a winning
streak betting with myself if the display is going to work. Similarly, if my
house mate turns of the LED display then the Radeon HD 6950 goes in to deep
sleep without recovering.

I can connect through SSH with my Android phone or tablet and sudo shutdown;
as sometimes a reboot isn't enough to bring the card out of sleep.

It takes 2-5mins for the xorg process to finish, during that time the
process hits 100% of single threaded CPU utilization. The .xsession-
errors log file often has lots of DBus errors. Mostly I issue a kill
-9 just to speed the up the shutdown.

Getting rid of the Debian package firmware-linux-nonfree which
contains the BIOS blobs for these cards for the Radeon driver made a
significant improvement from the almost always doesn't recover to now if
the LED display is sleeping and I turn the projector (HDMI) on, more
often than not both displays will work.

There's nothing worse than a black screen of doom!

Kim

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 442932] Re: Linux Mint 7 Crash?

2012-07-06 Thread Oskar Wallgren
By judging from the screenshot and the timing of the onset, I'd say this
is a hardware error.

Apparently this is a known issue with this laptop:
http://zipmypc.com/hardware-issues/diplsy-problem-charge-toshiba-m200/
http://forums.toshiba.com/t5/Video-Display/lcd-problem-toshiba-satellite-m200/td-p/97667
http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=55131

It could be something like the GPU, a serial driver or the lcd screen itself. I
vote the serial driver... especially if it's of brand National Semiconductor...
:( (they had it coming...)

As this is a hardware problem, Linux Mint 7 is long gone, the OP doesn't
seem to be active on Launchpad and the Toshiba in question most likely
is in a cupboard somewhere, I close this thread as invalid.
