@Andre Come on, I am a regular user. I have no idea how to switch kernels. I might find it on google, but I am not aware of consequences and if something goes wrong I won't be able to roll back. If the solution works, maybe it could be patched as a system update so that everyone can apply it safely. PS. I just can't leave with those system freezes, it happens during my daily work, i.e. skype calls :( Thanks -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/993187 Title: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.
Tomasz Ostrowski see #328 above, I am not new to computers but a novice to Linux and I was able to do it. As a side benefit I am now confident using Synaptic Package manager, It was the last thing I installed after removing Ubuntu Software Center. I also did a system image using ReDO backup prior to any changes but thanks to Kevin LeBlanc's excellent instructions I had no problems. Does anyone here know if I am creating an image to an external USB HDD is there a best file system to have the drive formatted to? I will be using the external for full images only - no sharing with other OS's. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/993187 Title: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 918791] Re: qemu-kvm dies when using vmvga driver and unity in the guest
if x or y 0, set them to 0 (and decrement with/height accordingly) If it is possible in this context to have negative x or y, it is also possible to have them larger than width and heigth by absolute value, so that when decrementing width/height accordingly, width/height becomes negative too. There's more: this function does not check for w/h being positive too, just like it doesn't for x/y. And again, if it is possible to have x0 or y0 there, it might be just as well possible to have w0 or h0 here. And with w0 or h0, we'll most likely crash too. So indeed, some (upstream) verification is needed here -- where these negative values are coming from, whenever it is EVER okay to have them, what to do with these, and where to check (I guess the check should be done somewhere in the upper layer). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.
So I used to have complete system freezes as well. I used to think it was tied to video card drivers, but then after several complete reinstalls of Ubuntu 12.04 I found the cause of the problem, at least for me. I run a 64 bit AMD (1.6 dual core) laptop with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 dual booting. I have the 200mb partition, a part for win7, a part for linux, and then a part for everything else. I have 3 gigs of ram, if it matters. I thought it was coincidence at first, but then after several tests I've concluded that Win7 system resume feature is the cause of the problem. Ubuntu would freeze, completely, right after login or at the login screen, or even a few minutes later, until I've completely logged out of and shut down Win7. Hope that helps, but I dont think everyone with this problem is dual booting, or has a setup like mine. Also, Grub2 boots before MBR, if that makes a difference. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/993187 Title: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash
This bug has been around from 11.04 for me. I have Nvidia QuadroFX3800M in HP 8740w Mobile Workstation. I have basically given up on Ubuntu on my workstation. I have found this bug with all fresh installs and with all versions of Nvidia drivers from Ubuntu and Nvidia directly. OS has other stability issues without the Nvidia drivers (though these may be related). Instead of adding new features lets get this OS more stable. The Stability has never been as good as 9.10 in a long while. I am using a netbook with 10.04 that works amazingly well (though thers no Broadcom Xtal HD acceleration driversfor Ubuntu). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1022208] [NEW] xorg crashes on session being locked for extended periods
Public bug reported: I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 x64 on a reasonably high-end system. If the user session is kept locked for a significant length (say overnight), there is often a delay on resuming, the background for the enter your password screen is not what it should be (instead of having a black background, it's very often like a screenshot, which in theory is also a security risk), and after logging in I receive a your system has encountered a problem dialog. After ignoring it the first few times, today I saw that it's a segfault in /usr/bin/Xorg. For background info, this is a fresh install, and the only things running in the foreground while the system was locked is firefox. I also have dropbox running in the background. Ubuntu version: 12.04 LTS Package version: xserver-xorg-core 2:1.11.4-0ubuntu10.4 What I expected to happen: the unlock screen appears almost instantly, and shows the ambience background What happened instead: the screen was blank for about a minute or so, and the background looked like a screenshot of the desktop just before it was locked. I don't know if the compiz tag is relevant or not, but since it was automatically included, I'm not removing it.
