[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1033783] Re: Wacom stylus and touch not recognised on Lenovo X220t

2012-09-18 Thread Richard Brown
I've tested 3.5 final and 3.6rc1. It is as you predicted, the bug exists
on 3.5 final, but is fixed in 3.6rc1.

By the way, for anyone else testing this, if you boot into a working
kernel after having been in a not-working one, touch/pen won't initially
work. Putting the laptop to sleep and waking it up again seems to
reliably get it going again.

I switched to 3.6-rc5 from the kernel PPA
(http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/) and so far, I haven't
had any blank screens upon resume. Please have a try.

BTW, although the kernel says quantal, you can install it on 12.04.
You need 4 packages / per architecture.

Please test and provide feedback in the hope of helping engineers fix
it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1046088] Re: No Brightness Control on ASUS G75VW Notbook

2012-09-18 Thread Mario Vukelic
Sorry, corrections to my previous comment #8:

1. Typo in the Macbook Pro version number. I meant to write: on a MacBook Pro
5,3 (mid-2009)
2. Actually I did run Precise on this machine with backlight control working
with Nvidia. But this had been an Oneiric install which was upgraded. I did not
verify the Nvidia backlight in a recent new install with 12.04.1, since I only
ran nouveau for the time it took to upgrade to Quantal beta, where it does not
work now.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1046088] Re: No Brightness Control on ASUS G75VW Notbook

2012-09-18 Thread Mario Vukelic
It seems that other hardware is also affected. Running Quantal, I don't
have backlight control with Nvidia drivers on a MacBook Pro 5,
(mid-2009) with NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT.

There is a forum thread discussing missing backlight control with this hardware
in Precise: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2042999
It says that it helped to install the nvidia_bl module from the same source as
was given here i the Asus bug report in comment #5.

Nvidia backlight control worked on this machine for all releases I tried
starting in 2009 up to Oneiric. I skipped Precise (where it apparently
was broken according to the forum thread), and now found it out of order
in Quantal.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 966744] Re: [i965] Resume from suspend leaves me with black screen or a screen of the desktop before it suspended. Compiz hung in intel_update_renderbuffers() from intel_prepare_r

2012-09-18 Thread James M. Leddy
** Changed in: compiz
   Status: Confirmed = Invalid

** No longer affects: oem-priority/precise

** No longer affects: oem-priority

** Description changed:

This happens intermittently. Sometimes upon resume, all I see is a black
screen and the cursor. the mouse and keyboard respond (the mouse moves)
but nothing changes. Switching to console and back doesn't fix it.
Killing Compiz also does not fix the issue. Further, if one has password
lock disabled on resume the user will be stuck with a frozen display of
whatever was last shown on the screen before suspend. The mouse cursor
still changes as you hover over various elements but the display is
frozen solid. One can switch to another TTY via ctrl+alt+F1 but killing
the X session is the only way to get back to the desktop.

Attempts to replace compiz have been fruitless. Trying the 3.4 kernel
also did not fix the issue.

BTW, I haven nothing connected to the laptop when I resume and before
suspend. This is a very annoying issue because the only way to recover
is to reboot, which means all the open files will be lost.

  [UPDATE]
It was discovered that switching to a tty, killing compiz, then invoking
'metacity --replace' would successfully switch over to metacity. Attempting to
invoke 'compiz --replace' afterwards would put the state right back where it
was (frozen screen, etc.) and output error messages saying something similar to
invalid configuration, this should never happen, you should probably raise a
bug report about it. After killing Compiz again and invoking compiz --replace
yet again I can get basic window management back (though unity --replace still
does not work as it whines about unclean exit states). So one still needs to
start over again to get it all functioning properly.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 992062] Re: Mouse Pauses when Crossing Screen Borders

2012-09-18 Thread Phil Usher
See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1969264

This problem is caused by a feature of Unity related to edge stop
velocity:

Have a look at CompizConfig Settings Manager (might need to install from
software center), under Ubuntu Unity Plugin Experimental there's an
option called edge stop velocity, I think that may be what your looking
for or one of the options above it.

Based on other people's postings you may find these settings work well
for you:

Launcher Reveal Pressure = 3
Launcher Edge Stop Overcome Pressure = 15
Pressure Decay Rate = 3
Edge Stop Velocity = 10

Cheers ... Phil Usher

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-09-18 Thread Veronika Levkevich
I had that problem with Ubuntu 12.04 (Dell latitude e6330, amd64), and there
were about 4 freezes per hour sometimes. For that reason I removed Ubuntu and
installed Debian. There were no freezes with kernel 2.4, but I updated kernel
to version 3.2.0-3-amd64 today and got complete freeze again.
So it seems to me it isn't ubuntu problem, but it's linux kernel problem.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-09-18 Thread Martin Wildam
I had similar issues - currently on kernel 3.4.0-030400-generic (got
at http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/) and no freeze since
then (a few days).

The only reason I did not use a higher kernel is because of the higher
kernel numbers do not work with the current vmware player which I need
for work.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1047306]

2012-09-18 Thread Timo Aaltonen
this bug was actually not in 9.0 but only master, we just had a hybrid
branch due to either a mistaken merge from master right after 9.0 got
branched, or it got branched from an earlier commit that we had pulled
from master.

Either way, closing as fixed by f73ffacbf0c65ad.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 966744] Re: [i965] Resume from suspend leaves me with black screen or a screen of the desktop before it suspended. Compiz hung in intel_update_renderbuffers() from intel_prepare_r

Switched to v3.6-rc6-quantal and have no suspend issues with Samsung
np900xc3. Generic kernels for precise 12.04, 3.2.0-30 and 3.2.0-29 are
not resuming correctly giving a black screen with cursor instead of the
unity session.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 995372] Re: switching external monitors impossible

2012-09-18 Thread Claude Durocher
I do have the same problem but this happens only on some computer (HP
for instance). This is caused by the gnome settings daemon that crashes
when the user logs in :

kernel: [ 63.358948] gnome-settings-[2697]: segfault at 8 ip b5bc514c
sp bfa389d0 error 4 in libpower.so[b5bb5000+18000]

Removing the library that crashes gnome-settings is a workaround (in my
case /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon-3.0/libpower.so). I'm not sure if
it's related to bug 971353.

I also noticed that the original admin account on the workstation don't
experience the crash.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 966744] Re: [i965] Resume from suspend leaves me with black screen or a screen of the desktop before it suspended. Compiz hung in intel_update_renderbuffers() from intel_prepa

2012-09-18 Thread Anmar Oueja
Matt,

does anyone know what exactly is missing from the mainline kernel, or
if using it is really advised? I use a realtek wireless card that used
to be pretty buggy, I would hate to have to give up wireless to get
 suspend back...

That is a fairly complicated question to answer but I doubt you will
have a problem with wireless with 3.6 simply because the realtek
drivers are usually updated with every kernel release so if you card
use to work ok, in 3.2, it should work much better in 3.6.

Testing it should be really easy. Just download the package , I have
the address a couple of comments above, and install them, using dpkg
-i, and boot. If doesn't work, remove the packages and you are back to
your original kernel.

2012-09-18 Thread bmomjian
Matt Price (matt-price) asked about the underlying cause of the hang,
and I think it is most clearly stated in the link to freedesktop-bugs
#50227 at the top of this page in the status table, which finally has
this bug marked as critical by almost every subsystem.

The fact this bug report goes back to March indicates this bug fix is
not open source's finest hour. :-( I wonder what the timeframe is for
a fix to be pushed as an Ubuntu 12.04 update.

Not sure if this information is useful, but I used to encounter this bug
at least per day with Ubuntu 12.04 on a Lenovo Thinkpad x200. After
installing Xubuntu 12.04 (fresh install, not via the xubuntu-desktop
package), I have yet to encounter this bug after almost a month of use.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1051231] [NEW] on creating main window X gets unusable, memory consumption gets overly high, high I/O-Load

2012-09-18 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

after starting a wireframe shows up, and then a high I/O-load occurs, memory is
consumed up to 90%, X-Windows gets completely unusable (freezes), but changing
to console (ctrl-alt-f1) is possible - 20-40s after pressing the keys - and
instantly I/O-load drops to zero as switching to console happens.
Therefore I think this may be a problem with QT or even X-Windows itself.
There are some errors printed by picard/QT/X-Windows on the running terminal:
(python:5103): Gtk-CRITICAL **: IA__gtk_widget_style_get: assertion
