2012-10-07 Thread John O
Do you have the fglrx driver (for your AMD card) installed?

Compiz crashes on my system when it is, so I get no unity when it is
installed, and slow to the point of unusable unity when I remove it.
Also tried using the latest version from amd.com but still no joy

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1046088] Re: No Brightness Control on ASUS G75VW Notbook (304.43)

2012-10-07 Thread showgun
Dell XPS M1710 Laptop WITH Nvidia GeForce Go 7950 GTX
Fresh install 12.10
I only had what was automatically installed with Ubuntu after looking at my
older installation I realized that some drivers were not installed and some
could not be installed due to missing xorg
But I was able to installed Nvidia common and after restarting I finally had
brightness maybe you might want to make sure that Nvidia common as well as
Current are installed it might do the trick but I still do not have display
resolution setting

On further testing, the "You are now offline" warning bubble displays
just fine, so perhaps this is more likely a Unity problem than an X

Also the following definitions:

It looks like the localization support inside libx11 is generally not

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1057000] Re: [Ubuntu 12.04.1/12.10] nVidia drivers 304.51 prevent autohidden Unity launcher from revealing

2012-10-07 Thread Rocko
Forcing a revert to the 304.43 driver breaks things for me, because
304.51 has a fix that stops the nvidia driver crashing the kernel so
frequently. Isn't modifying xorg.conf a better solution than forcing a
revert?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 938981] Re: Xorg freeze when starting Firefox

2012-10-07 Thread Mihaly Biro
Ok, bad news. Had a severe crash on firefox today.
Good news: Its the first crash that was reported in the system message log, see
the excerpt at the end.
First segfault in fglrx_dri.so happens at firefox startoff and has no
consequences, firefox still firing up and running.
Second crash rebooted GNOME (or maybe Xorg itsself?)

2012-10-07 Thread Blümchen Blau
Had the error-report strait after successfull boot.
Don't know, if this is connected with a problem I experience since Kernels
3.4.0-15 and higher: I need in average 3 boots until unity starts properly.
Systems sticks at some point during boot after authentication of dm-crypt
(showing various text-messages).
Usually (not always) starts then with Kernel 3.4.0-14.
Found no xorg.conf on my system.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 625934] Re: NVIDIA X Server Settings crash on changing GPU Scaling Method from sctretched to any other option

2012-10-07 Thread webmaster777
When ran from console it shows the following message:

The program 'nvidia-settings' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 239 error_code 2 request_code 139 minor_code 19)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
