[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1072672] Re: Mouse freezes from time to time. The touchpad as well as external mouse.

2013-06-21 Thread 2046
I know this will be out of topic, but for those who might follow this
thread..

With the 3.10.0-031000rc1-generic kernel the Internet wired connection
is not found, the eth0 doesn't exist and so You can connect only over
wifi.

The 3.5.0-28-generic is just fine :) .. with the wired and wifi
connections.

So I hope one day it will all work under one kernel ;)

It's means that I don't have an immediate fix for you. It is very
unlikely to be bad hw, but for the time you need to find your own
workaround (probably just keep on retrying the modeset until it randomly
works).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1173400] Re: Garbled display: kernel 3.8.0-19-generic, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4530/4570/545v

2013-06-21 Thread Johannes Hell
I really don't understand why there is no progress at all with this bug.
It's critical. My brother just told me that he stopped using Ubuntu
after years and installed Windows instead because after upgrading he
wasn't able to use his machine (he's got a Dell Studio 1555, too). He
isn't that much of an expert so he tried to do a fresh install which
didn't work either. He couldn't reach anybody that could help him and he
just uses his laptop for surfing the web and listening to music. He just
wants it to work, so - since Ubuntu didn't work anymore - he installed
Windows and as he says Now everything works just fine. I am not going
back. I am sure he is not the only one. That could have been prevented
if there had been a warning like Don't upgrade right now. This version
of Ubuntu doesn't work with your machine at this time.

(Looks like maybe xkb_keycodes has types 4, 5, and 6 but not 7?)

I use a Sun Type 7 UNIX-layout USB keyboard. X detects the keyboard:

(II) config/hal: Adding input device Sun USB Keyboard
(**) Sun USB Keyboard: always reports core events
(**) Sun USB Keyboard: Device: /dev/input/event2
(II) Sun USB Keyboard: Found keys
(II) Sun USB Keyboard: Configuring as keyboard
(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device Sun USB Keyboard (type: KEYBOARD)
 (**) Option xkb_rules evdev
(**) Sun USB Keyboard: xkb_rules: evdev
 (**) Option xkb_model pc105
 (**) Sun USB Keyboard: xkb_model: pc105
 (**) Option xkb_layout us
(**) Sun USB Keyboard: xkb_layout: us

But it wrongly detects it as a standard pc105 US keyboard. This means
some keys don't work (e.g. Meta becomes Super, Compose becomes Menu,
etc.). The correct layout for this keyboard is
us+sun_vndr/usb(sun_usb). Setting this with setxkbmap -layout makes
the keyboard behave as expected.

If I recall correctly, there is no difference in the layouts of USB model

to more closely match the pc105 layout. (Type 6 keyboards were made in
versions
for both the traditional Sun/SPARC serial connector and USB, while only USB
versions of Type 7 are made, since they postdate the EOL of the machines that
used the older connectors.)

The main differences between Type 6 7 are physical (embedded USB hub to
plug in mice, flash drives, etc. ; RoHS-compliant materials ; updated
appearance).

My Type 7 keyboard has a PC layout. For at least the Type 6 keyboard
there are at least two layouts: PC layout and UNIX layout. The UNIX
layout has the capslock and control keys switched and I believe the
Escape key was also moved. Another difference is that the power key was
changed to a standby key (same keycode, but different icon printed on
the key?)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1188774] Re: [snb] 13.04 goes into hard lock mode randomly.

2013-06-21 Thread JaSauders
Despite the STA issues with newer kernels, I decided to tough it out for
the time being. Unfortunately I can not switch wireless cards (Lenovo
BIOS on this unit does a hardware check and will halt if the wifi card
was changed), and I also cannot get STA to install on any other kernel
besides what comes downstream from Ubuntu. Currently I'm on 3.8.0-25. I
am on Ubuntu GNOME 13.04 at this point. I had a lockup this morning.
Here's that syslog:

http://paste.ubuntu.com/5787379/

You can see in the 8 o'clock hour similar findings to the earlier
syslog.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1193435] [NEW] right-click context menus behind window

2013-06-21 Thread Mike
Public bug reported:

About once every-other week, the context menus from Chromium do not
appear. This happens from left-clicking a bookmark folder in my toolbar,
or right-clicking on a webpage. Nothing is displayed. If I un-maximize
the window and right-click near the right edge, the menu is visible in
the background. I can also see bookmark menus if they are at the extreme
right of the application and hang off into the desktop background.

When in this state, a right-click on the desktop also hides behind
Chromium. But it overlays Firefox. Testing this is difficult since I
can't interact with menus in the normal fashion.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1175533] Re: [HSW] intel VGA driver i915 doesn't support new haswell graphics [8086:0a2e]

2013-06-21 Thread Brad Figg
This bug is awaiting verification that the kernel in -proposed solves
the problem. Please test the kernel and update this bug with the
results. If the problem is solved, change the tag 'verification-needed'
to 'verification-done'.

If verification is not done by one week from today, this fix will be
dropped from the source code, and this bug will be closed.

See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how
to enable and use -proposed. Thank you!

I am new to both Ubuntu (12.04) and pulseaudio (1:1.1-0ubuntu15.3), but have
used RH and SuSE for years.
When trying to get the console beep working, I found extensive discussion of
* failure to get a hardware beep;
* failure to get an X beep;
I don't believe either of those is the problem I am having (unless there are 2
kinds of X beeps).

I am *not* trying to get a hardware beep (via pcspkr).
I *have* already implemented the fix described (among other places) at:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/486154
namely to run the commands:
  pactl upload-sample /usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/bell.ogg bell.ogg
  pactl load-module module-x11-bell sample=bell.ogg
This works fine, allowing xkbbell (and hence xterm and emacs) to beep properly.

But xbiff still fails to beep.

I don't know whether this is a bug in xbiff, pulseaudio-module-x11, or
possibly elsewhere in pulseaudio, but I have been unable to find further
information about the difference between xbiff and xkbbell, let alone a
way to make xbiff beep. (Irrelevant aside: I've been using xbiff for
some 20 years; failure to get it working properly in Ubuntu is a game-
changer for me.)

Thanks,
  Cilantro

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Reviewing your dmesg attachment in this bug report it
seems that there is a problem with your hardware. I recommend
performing a back up and then investigating the situation. Measures you
might take include checking cable connections and using software tools
to investigate the health of your hardware. In the event that is is not
in fact an error with your hardware please set the bug's status back to
New. Thanks and good luck!

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]
