Public bug reported: choosing a kernel 3.9. when booting - resolution of monitor is o.k. xrandr -q gives correct values. when choosing a 3.10 kernel, the monitor resolution is too less. and: xrandr -q does not show the possible monitor resolution, but gives an error message showing problems with gamma things (writing now with 3.9 kernel, I cannot reproduce. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1196712] [NEW] nvidia-310-updates 310.44-0ubuntu2: nvidia-310-updates kernel module failed to build
Public bug reported: I was humming along and appeared to be fine, then the system froze completely and forced me to power-cycle to get it to come back to life. On doing so, booting into the current 3.10 (3.10.0-1.8) kernel for Saucy, there was no nvidia driver, and an error in the xorg logs saying that the driver failed to load. I was left with X in a failsafe mode, and no desktop, only a black screen and an X cursor... no way to do anything useful at all. To get to a working system, I had boot into the older 3.9.0-7.15 which did have a working, compiled nvidia driver. Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears to be a regular (non-security) bug. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1183868] Re: Displaylink open /dev/dri/card1: Resource temporarily unavailable
I can confirm this seems to be a v3.8 bug. I get the same symptoms on amd64 3.8.0-25.37 (current raring kernel), and 3.8.0-27.39~pre201306280400 (current raring kernel-ppa pre-proposed.) When I installed a v3.9 kernel (I used 3.9.0-030900.201304291257 from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.9-raring/ ) my DisplayLink adapter just worked when hotplugged. I see a few udl-related commits in the mainline changelogs for 3.8.1 3.8.8.
