[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 958279] Re: FGLRX DPMS support totally broken, fails to wake up the monitor after putting it to sleep.

2013-09-28 Thread Mikael Nordvall
I have this issue as well.

Ubuntu 12.04, 3.2.0-53-generic-pae kernel
Catalyst Driver Packaging Version 8.96
AMD Radeon HD 7660D (A10 5700 APU)

I put this APU in two new builds, totally identical except that one has
ASRock FM2A85 and the other ASRock FM2A75. Only the build with the
...A85 mobo is affected.

Using 'xset dpms force off' to activate energy star power saving
funtions, or 'xset s activate' to blank screen will sooner or later
(often sooner) leave me with a running computer where i can not return
from the blank screen (and it is not just that I can not see the screen,
the keyboard is not responding, i have tried to safely shutdown using
keybindings, but it does not work).

Does not fix the issue:
'aticonfig --acpi-services=off'

Setting this option in xorg.conf does not fix the issue:
Option DPMS false

All these things in combination does prevent the issue:
Put in my login script:
'xset -dpms '
'xset s off '
Put in xorg.conf:
Option DPMS false

But it does not fix the issue, because I only avoid screen freeze because I
never enable the screen blanking/saving functions.
Right now I am using 'feh -FNY ~/.black.png' as a simple screen-blanking
function instead.

Regards
Mikael

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 958279] Re: FGLRX DPMS support totally broken, fails to wake up the monitor after putting it to sleep.

2013-09-28 Thread Mikael Nordvall
Refering my last post above;

Using xscreensaver (without using 'Display Power Management') works fine
for me, so if you encounter issues with the xorg screensaver freezing,
disabling the 'xset' screensaving features and installing/using
xscreensaver instead might be a workaround for you as well:

Install package 'xscreensaver'.

Add these two lines to ~/.xinitrc (or whatever gnome/unity/xfce/kde startup
script you have):
xset -dpms
xset s off

Set this option in /etc/X11/xorg.conf:
Option DPMS false

Configure xscreensaver with cmd 'xscreensaver-demo' and set it to use
Mode: Blank Screen Only and do NOT enable any Display Power
Management.

If you sometimes want to manually start the screen saver, use cmd
xscreensaver-command -activate'.

/Mikael

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1218224] Re: [gm45] VGA Output not activated

2013-09-28 Thread Cefn
I can confirm that this applies also to a Samsung monitor as well as the
Dell monitor, with two different, high-quality VGA cables, suggesting
that it's a driver issue. A reboot of the machine with the monitor
attached is a workaround for the issue with the Samsung as well.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1232426] [NEW] Saicy beta Lubuntu does not save monitor configuration

Public bug reported:

monitor and set external monitor to 1360 instead of default 1920
(squint, hard to read read 1920x1080 on a 15.5 monitor).

Save configuration. Reboot, saved configuration is ignored and boots up

built in monitor off, 1360x768.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1222602] Re: [gen3] Bad performance on GMA950 and GMA3150

2013-09-28 Thread Reiner Jung
I have tried the solution from comment #6 and it works. It would be
helpful to understand why this works. Digging through the comments it
looks like mesa uses not the GPU acceleration when the variable is not
set. This looks like a design error in mesa. Maybe mesa developers
should be asked about this. However, I have tried gnome-shell (before
adding the environment setting) and it worked like a charm indicating
that gnome-shell sets this variable on its own or initializes mesa
differently. Considering gnome-shell was freaking slow compared to unity
in 13.04. there must have been a not so wise change in unity.

Ok, thanks.

I was able to confirm the lockups happening also on an AMD/ATI laptop.

However, I get much more lockups on the Intel.

So anyone else experienced this or reported it? Else I'll go my way and
report this soon.

2013-09-28 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Till Kamppeter, I noticed you omitted following the kernel.org format,
on the grounds of you having identified the regression commit, and
others noted they are experiencing a similar issue. The kernel.org
format as outlined by Linus was created to be in addition to regression
commit identification and duplicate notices, not in substitution. This
omission would more than likely be a reason why your e-mail was promptly
ignored. ;) If you wouldn't mind, after testing the lastest mainline
kernel via http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v3.12-rc2-saucy/ , and assuming it's still reproducible,
having another go at the mailing list following the format verbatim
would probably yield you an upstream response in a timely manner.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 651468] Re: No image after suspend

2013-09-28 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Thomas B Homburg, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't
been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an
issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development
release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications-Accessories-Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux replace-with-bug-number

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional
upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily kernel
folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream
kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this
bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For
example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.12-rc1

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next
to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please
remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
understanding.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1207487] Re: Brightness Controls work but brightness doesnt change

2013-09-28 Thread Sukarn Maini
Update -

# ls /sys/class/backlight has three listings
acpi_video0 acpi_video1 intel_backlight

# cat /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/max_brightness
976

# echo 100 /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness

bash: /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness: Permission denied

# sudo -s

root# echo 100 /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness

This last command worked and my brightness was changed successfully. I
tried other values too, and they all seem to work. I didn't try going
beyond the max_brightness value, of course.

Is there something else I could try that would help in narrowing down
and / or fixing this bug?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1232557] [NEW] X.Org Server terminates when I close video player or run glxgears

2013-09-28 Thread jose
Public bug reported:

How to reproduce:
run one of these:
glxgears
mplayer -vo gl2 /path/to/video.extension or
vlc /path/to/video.extension
then close it by pressing alt+f4 or clicking in the X in the corner of the
window

What you expected to happen:
The program closes succesfully

What happened instead:
X server crashes

This has been fixed upstream:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=60182#c29 . Also note that there
is another patch that seems to solve a related bug:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=60182#c6 I'm not a dev, so I
cannot add many details, though.

My hardware is: AMD A6-3400M, Radeon HD 6520g + HD 6750M.

I made sure this has not been fixed in xserver-xorg-video-ati version
1:7.2.0-0ubuntu9 by checking the source files manually.
(I'm using several PPAs, one of which is a repo for updates graphics drivers
for raring... but I checked this exact version)

X.Org Server terminate when I close VLC (OpenGL GLX video output).
This issue not reproducible when VLC doesn't playback anything. So only closing
player that still playback video trigger issue.
Issue reproducible not every time (around 1 of 10 closing VLC get X.Org Server
termination).
Issue tested only on integrated GPU (Radeon HD 6620G).

Kubuntu 13.04 x86_64
Linux 3.8rc6 (with Linux 3.7 is also reproducible).
Mesa: 9.0.2 (with 9.1 is also reproducible)
libdrm-radeon1: 2.4.41
xserver-xorg-video-radeon: 7.1.0
xserver-xorg-core: 1.13.2
KDE 4.9.98 (4.10rc3)

I use LightDM-KDE. I'll look into LightDM log next time.

I have just posted a patch that may help at least prevent the crash. I
have seen this bug on my end too, but I though that I locally introduced
it with my own hacks. The patch does not solve the root cause (i.e.
buffer double-free), but if it prevents the crash, maybe we can apply it
to get people going until we find the real solution.

No, I didn't find the root cause. I am only assuming (based on the last
message in your Xorg.0.log file) that you are seeing the same kind of a
crash that I have been seeing recently.

So I would like you to test if the patch that I posted fixes the problem
for you. If it does, then there are two open issues that remain: a)
should we push my patch upstream (i.e. to at least prevent the crash of
affected users like you) and b) what really causes the double-free. The
latter is what we have no idea about yet.

Any additional logs that you can produce in the meantime would be
useful.
