I haven't seen this happen on any Ubuntu version with any of the
following AMD cards: ATI RV370, HD 4200, HD 4200M, HD 4870, HD 6850, HD
6870, HD 7950, HD 8570D. You really shouldn't be using Catalyst unless
you have a RadeonSI card.

That device is expected to have a VGA header on the motherboard, so it

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1184451] Re: Ubuntu 13.10 random screen freeze while Normal OS activites

2013-12-05 Thread Jorge Candela
Just to share with everybody who is getting the same issue, I have
dropped freezes down to just one a day following Goalie Fight advice in
a href=https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-
server/+bug/1184451/comments/46#46/a.

I'm running a fresh 13.10 64bit install and the freezeing was happening
really often to me driving unusable my system.

It's important to point out that I finally did it from the command line,
like is adviced in #46.

However, before this, I had tried the same through the visual
configuration window for private controllers offered by ubuntu but with
no change at all. I don't know why, but it's not the same installing
controllers through the visual configuration or with apt.

In fact apt asked me to remove other controllers which were supossed to
be already unistalled from the private controller manager. I'm not sure
if this could be relevant to the subject but I was not expecting
something like that.

Since that change I can work again but I still have to reboot the system
once a day.

You mean that the CPU with its on-chip GPU puts out a VGA signal through
some of its pins and the motherboard does not correctly take care of it
due to a hardware design bug?

Do you have a test case for this? I knocked up a simple one with two XI2
clients, one creating a window with enter/leave on a window, one with
enter/leave on the button grab on the root window. Neither client gets
an event and a printf in the server shows nothing is written onto the
wire either (only the button event to activate the grab).

If I change to an active grab + ungrab, I get the events correctly.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1258270] [NEW] Cannot use the external vga display

2013-12-05 Thread Parrenin Frédéric
Public bug reported:

When using plugging to an external vga display, the external screen displays 4
times the computer display, and then both displays freeze.
In other words, the external vga port is unusable.

Note that I used this external display with another laptop using ubuntu
13.10, and it works perfectly.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1184451] Re: Ubuntu 13.10 random screen freeze while Normal OS activites

2013-12-05 Thread Khai Dinh
I performed a fresh install of 13.10 64-bit on my Dell E6520, and was
running into this freeze issue at the login screen or even shortly after
logging in. Eventually, a terminal like screen would appear with
nouveau error messages. Much like comment #46 above, I was able to do
the following:

1) Opened Virtual Terminal, using ctrl+alt+F3
2) Logged in at the prompt
3) sudo apt-get install nvidia-319 (which is the latest version that I can see)

During the nvidia driver download and install, my display would switch
back to either the frozen login screen or the black screen with the
stream of nouveau errors. I would just hit ctrl+alt+F3 again to
continue watching the installation process. Once the install was
finished, I rebooted, using the command: sudo reboot. I did not remove
nouveau.

It's only been about 8 hours, but I haven't hit the freeze issue again
yet... fingers crossed.

I'm attaching the nouveau messages grep'd from my syslog, in case it
helps.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1258374] [NEW] [NV44A] GeForce 6200 output status inverted

2013-12-05 Thread Andrey Bondarenko
Public bug reported:

My NVIDIA GeForce 6200 has 3 outputs: DVI, VGA, TV-out. In ubuntu 13.04 and
13.10
nouveau driver detects output connection status incorrectly. If I connect DVI
cable
only, nouveau thinks than both VGA and TV-out connected. If I connect VGA cable
only, it thinks DVI and TV-out connected.

Wrong connection status leads to wrong resolution selection. Monitor connected
to
DVI/VGA reports preferred resolution 1600x1200, but Xorg ignores it because it
thinks
monitor is not connected. Instead it uses TV-out settings with 1024x768
resolution.

The only workarround I've found is to append video=1600x1200 to kernel
command line.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1258374] Re: [NV44A] GeForce 6200 output status inverted

2013-12-05 Thread Andrey Bondarenko
This looks similar to bug #636613, but Xorg.log from #636613 connector
VGA-1 is connected while both DVI-I-1 and TV-1 shows disconnected. If
reporter used single monitor setup TV-1 should be in connected state.
Because symptoms do not match exactly and I will not mark bugs as
duplicates.
