[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1396011] [NEW] (i915) Black screen resuming from suspend

2014-11-25 Thread Nikke
Public bug reported:

Similar to Bug #1336227 and Bug #966744, intermittedly when resuming
from suspend I get a black screen with only a visible mouse pointer.
Sometimes I can move the mouse pointer. I have the feeling it occurs
more often when disconnecting an external monitor while in suspend.

I can always switch to a VT, and sometimes I'm able to get everything going
again by killing compiz and restarting unity:
 killall -9 compiz
 unity --replace

But most oft, only way is to restart the lightdm service...

All the best,
Niklas

It's worked around for now (Check that pixmaps which aren't managed by

mesa.

the fix consisted of not calling glXBindTexImageEXT when

  XGetGeometry (dpy, pixmap, ...)

returns false.

https://www.opengl.org/registry/specs/EXT/texture_from_pixmap.txt does say that

Currently, only pixmaps can be bound to textures. If draw is not a
valid GLXPixmap, then a GLXBadPixmap error is generated.

so indeed this should be handled better.

This technically is a bug in st/dri though.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1396232] [NEW] Xorg freeze

2014-11-25 Thread Barry Warsaw
Public bug reported:

gnome-do and Xorg/unity/desktop seem to be incompatible on a fresh
install of either utopic or vivid. This is either tied to 1080p
(1920x1080) or a fresh install of either version. Details as I know
them are provided here.

I have a brand new machine which is running 1080p to an HDMI monitor. I
installed Ubuntu 15.04 fresh from a usb install (usb-creator run from an
existing, working vivid machine). As with all new machines, I go
through my new install check list:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BarryWarsaw

These are slightly out of order, and this problem crops up after doing
all the apt-get installs, apt-get update, and apt-get dist-upgrade.
After all that, a reboot, and a re-login, the desktop is corrupt and
unusable. I see the top menu bar extend from the right but only about
1/8th of the way to the left (the rest is desktop background), the dash
only displayes on the lower left about 1/3 of the way up (again, desktop
background the rest of the way), and neither the mouse nor the keyboard
work at all. I must ssh in to reboot (or hard reboot of course). The
system is still operational as the ssh shell works perfectly. The
desktop is simply corrupt visually and unresponsive. The login screen
after boot seems completely functional though. Mouse works fine as does
the keyboard (or I wouldn't be able to log in!).

Some additional data points make this even more interesting.

On a different disk on this very same machine, I installed OS X 10.10.1,
and VMware Fusion 7.0.1. Inside Fusion, I installed Vivid from daily
live build iso of yesterday (11/24/14), and went through the same steps.
I get exactly the same corruption and desktop freeze. I took a snapshot
of the disk and then installed Utopic fresh from an iso downloaded via
the normal www.ubuntu.com download site. In Utopic, I took a disk
snapshot, and then I again went through the same apt-get steps and the
desktop is again corrupt and frozen. This leads me to believe that one
of the packages in my new machine buildout are to blame.

I should also mention that in Vivid, I installed vmware-tools but in
Utopic I did not. No difference (except that with vmware-tools I can
set the display to 1920x1080, i.e. the full physical screen, while
without vmware-tools, I cannot get full screen resolution from System
Settings - Displays).

Oh, I tried booting each of the previous kernels, with no effect.

So now, I went back to the Utopic snapshot I took right after installing
from iso and confirmed that everything works perfectly fine. Desktop is
not corrupt and keyboard/mouse are responsive. Through the process of
elimination, I would take a disk snapshot, install a few packages, test
login, rinse and repeat. I was able to narrow it down to gnome-do and
its dependencies.

Specifically, after installing gnome-do and its dependencies, the
desktop was broken as described above. Reverting to the disk snapshot
pre-install of gnome-do, confirms that everything works fine. So now, I
installed gnome-do and its dependencies, witnessed the corruption and
freeze, and then ssh'd in and then did `apt-get purge gnome-do apt-
get autoremove`. gnome-do and its dependencies were removed, I
rebooted, logged in and everything was fine again.

I went back to the Vivid disk snapshot, purged gnome-do and autoremoved,
and *its* desktop was fixed. Clearly the problem is related to gnome-do
in both Utopic and Vivid and/or one of its dependencies. After
submitting this bug I will reboot back into Vivid running natively on
the hardware, ssh in, purge gnome-do and its dependencies and see what
happens. I suspect the desktop will be fixed again.

As if this is not interesting enough, I have two other desktops
currently running Vivid, and both have gnome-do installed, *and* both
work perfectly well! The big difference here is that both of them have
been dist-upgraded to Vivid through existing Utopic releases, and before
that, even Trusty. IOW, both machines were running at least Trusty,
upgraded to Utopic, upgraded to Vivid, and work perfectly fine. No
desktop corruption, no freezes. (One machine has been upgraded
successively since at least Precise; both machines are now on the
'devel' channel.)

I'm happy to continue helping with this in any way necessary. Let me
know if you need any other information or have anything you want me to
test.

I will let you bugtask this to unity and/or gnome-do or some other
dependency, as you see fit. Thanks!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1079011] Re: stellarium assert failure: nv10_state_fb.c:50: get_rt_format: Assertion `0' failed.

2014-11-25 Thread Rebecca Palmer
The error occurs because nv10 (the driver used for this card) declares
VBO support (extension GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object) but only supports
VBOs of int8, int16 and float (not double) types, and the application is
trying to draw data of type double. Given that the double type is part
of the OpenGL spec, that would appear to be a bug in mesa, not the
application.

The easy fix would be don't declare VBO support on those cards, but
that would slow down many other applications, and break any that require
this feature.

An alternative would be a software fallback that reads back the VBO data
and draws it as either a client-side array or individual primitives
(which would probably be even slower, but only applications that
actually use doubles would take the penalty), but that might be more
work than is reasonable to do for little benefit: stellarium and other
QtOpenGL applications will lose OpenGL 1 support in the upcoming Qt 5
transition anyway, and flightgear would probably be unusably slow on
such old hardware even if it didn't crash.

As an immediate workaround, you can use software rendering with
LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 stellarium
(perhaps the error message should suggest that?), but expect that to be slow.

I will report this upstream.

two cursors when some new window pops up or something (not sure what).

However, I am using an external monitor which is rotated, at the time.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1079011] Re: stellarium assert failure: nv10_state_fb.c:50: get_rt_format: Assertion `0' failed.

2014-11-25 Thread Rebecca Palmer
Sorry, upstream explicitly don't want bug reports for cards older than
nv30 (yours is nv18, current is ~nv120):
http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/MesaDrivers/

Changing the error message (at
http://sources.debian.net/src/mesa/10.3.2-1/src/mesa/drivers/dri/nouveau/nv10_render.c/#L104
) to something more useful, e.g.

-  assert(0);
+ assert(0 This application requires GLdouble vertex buffers, which your
graphics card does not support. Try software rendering
(LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 application).);

is probably about all that is reasonable to do as a Debian/Ubuntu patch.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a regular (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1394977] Re: Slow unity panel loading during first login

2014-11-25 Thread M Oberhauser
Found the issue, i had four NTFS partitions auto mounted with ntfs-3g in
/etc/fstab. Setting three of them to noauto reduced the delay to 2
seconds. I'm quite sure if I remove the last one it's fixed completely,
but I need it.

So should I file the bug against fuse / ntfs-3g / another display
package or is this inteded?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1396361] [NEW] Double Mouse Cursor

2014-11-25 Thread Dale
Public bug reported:

When dragging with the mouse cursor often it creates a double cursor
side by side about 10 cm apart on the screen. Only one cursor works.
Using print screen does not show the cursor in the resulting image.
Rebooting corrects the problem.

This is similar to the double mouse cursor reported as a result of flash
in a browser, however the current problem will occur without the browser
open.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1391975] Re: USC - mouse cursor on AMD graphics is drawing incorrectly

Mir is different because we're going through GBM (Mesa) and asking
radeon to conform to GBM rules. I think that's probably where the bug
lies.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1396412] [NEW] Severe Graphics lag after upgrade to 14.10

2014-11-25 Thread Strider Hiryu
Public bug reported:

After running a fresh Ubuntu 14.04 OS for several months without any
problems, my pc now has several video lag issues after upgrading to
14.10. Everything is noticeably slower :streaming video, moving windows
around in the desktop, playing steam games is impossible now and any
other kind of game. Searched everywhere for a solution. Will probably
revert back to fresh 14.04 install since there seems to be no immediate
remedy.

keep getting msg:

Your system is providing 3D via software rendering rather than hardware
rendering. This is a compatibility mode which should display 3D
graphics properly but the performance may be very poor. If the problem
you're reporting is related to graphics performance, your real question
may be why X didn't use hardware acceleration for your system

tried several things but could not fix thus far. There didn't appear to be a
standard answer for this anywhere. I'm using an older AMD gpu but that
shouldn't break everything when it worked well before. I wasn't using
proprietary but rather the open source drivers that are supposed to be default.
