[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1400235] Re: 10de:11fc [Dell Precision M4800] Screen does not wake up after sleep

2015-01-04 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Marius B. Kotsbak, as per
http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-support/product/precision-m4800-workstation/drivers
an update to your computer's buggy and outdated BIOS is available (A11). If
you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does
it change anything? If it doesn't, could you please both specify what
happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette
.

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so
posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful. As well, you don't
have to create a new bug report.

Once the BIOS is updated, and the information above is provided, then
please mark this report Status New.

Thank you for your understanding.

The bug (or at least something that seems like the bug) also appears
when running xmonad and unity-settings-daemon.

Are there any known workarounds?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1404247] Re: Vivid Wallpaper hashed

2015-01-04 Thread jerrylamos
Jan 4 vivid 64 .iso still same problem, wallpaper vertical bars and
hashed.

Rebooted latest update vivid.

Monitor is 1920x1080., vertical bar background. Internet windows and
terminal windows fine.

Tried 1360x768. Wallpaper Vertical bars.

Tried 1280x720. Vertical bars.

Tried 1024x768. Wallpaper O.K. but figure is stretched horizontally,
i.e. fat because resolution geometry 4:3 doesn't fit screen 16:9.

Switched back to 1360x768, Wallpaper now O.K. ???

Conclusion, something screwed up in the calculations for varying
resolution from 1920x768 (tiny print) to legible 1360x768. Only
calculation that's reliable is 1024x768, which is 4:3 does not look good
on this 16:9 screen besides being too coarse.

What code does the calculations for choice of pixels for varying
resolutions? lightdm? Xorg? Unity?

Sure would help if Bug #1405867 were fixed so that selecting different
wallpapers actually changed the wallpaper instead of having to reboot to
get different wallpaper.

Appreciate any thoughts on this situation.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1384515] [NEW] Laptop screen dims on logout

2015-01-04 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

After upgrading my laptop from Trusty to the Utopic final image, I
noticed that when I logged out or switched users, the screen would dim.
After logging back in, the brightness would not get restored. The
Display Brightness slider in the Power Manager Plugin still showed full
brightness, but it obviously was not. I had to click twice on the
slider to restore the screen to full brightness.

I then did a clean install and had the same issue.

Similar to bug #1302025, but this is not due to inactivity.

  * Insert HDMI cable to external monitor
  * Start Menu / Preferences / Monitor Settings
  * Quick Options / Show the same screen on both laptop LCD and external monitor

X will freeze immediately, mouse is blocked, CTRL-ALT-F1 does not
respond, only direct hardware function keys (like screen brightness /
disable wifi) respond. The only solution is to hard reset the computer

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1406401] [NEW] Nouveau TTM Failed to find memory space for buffer

2015-01-04 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I've been wrestling with a 3D graphics driver problem for the last few
months, Perhaps its time to report it.

This appears to be some sort of bad interaction between Xorg and the
nouveau kernel drivers. Similar bugs have been seen by others, on other
OS'es and spcifically on other graphics cards (e.g. Radeon). Seem to be
few/no reports for nouveau.

Symptoms: X11 background fails to repaint. Eventually X11 becomes
unresponsive. Sometimes restarting X is enough to defer the problem,
sometimes a reboot is required. Usually takes a week or so for the
problem to recurr. dmesg and /var/log/syslog fill up with vast numbers
of this:

Dec 29 14:30:17 fanny kernel: [258314.187016] [TTM] Failed to find memory space

TTM appears to be a kernel module that performs memory management of the
memory on the graphics card. presuably X11 and/or Mesa is failing to
release unused memory.

My setup is unusual: I am using TWO graphics cards, not one:

01:03.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation NV44A [GeForce 6200] (rev
a1)
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G72 [GeForce 7300 LE]
(rev a1)

It appears only the second one is affected, as that is where the visual
symptoms show up.

Setup has three! monitors. Xrandr is NOT running, since Xrandr appears
to be unable to deal with the monitor setup (two of the monitors are
rotated, the third is not; this seems to drive xrandr crazy, so it does
not come up). I mention this only because I'm wondering if the graphics
card RAM me=nagement is done differrently if xrandr is present.

Kernel is the stock kernel:
Linux version 3.13.0-40-generic (buildd@comet) (gcc version 4.8.2 (Ubuntu
4.8.2-19ubuntu1) ) #69-Ubuntu SMP Thu Nov 13 17:53:56 UTC 2014

System has 32GB RAM. Here is some more random info:
