[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1388612]
(In reply to Kenneth Graunke from comment #86) Hi all. I believe this should be fixed with Mesa master - specifically, this commit: commit c4fd0c9052dd391d6f2e9bb8e6da209dfc7ef35b Author: Kenneth Graunke kenn...@whitecape.org Date: Sat Jan 17 23:21:15 2015 -0800 i965: Work around mysterious Gen4 GPU hangs with minimal state changes. If you're able to test with Mesa master, I'd appreciate any reports of whether this solved the problem for you. It seems to have helped for me. Hi all, I'm the reporter of this bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1388612 that was redirected here. I've tested the fix on my machine updating the Xorg stack from https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ubuntu/ppa A packaged version of Mesa with the fix was released there yesterday only. Unfortunately, even though I'd like to, I'm not able to update the system by myself as soon as a change is committed. Cloning the Mesa repository, building and installing it is not enough, right? Is there a faster method than the one I've used? Anyway, glmark2 ideas benchmark works fine now but, in my case, the issue is not solved yet. An application written by myself using SDL (https://www.libsdl.org/), that before the fix used to cause the hang most of the times, now terminates due to a failing assertion in Mesa. The most frequent is: SDLApp: ../../../../src/mesa/vbo/vbo_exec_draw.c:222: vbo_exec_bind_arrays: Assertion `exec-vtx.bufferobj-Mappings[MAP_INTERNAL].Pointer' failed. Sometimes this happens: SDLApp: ../../../../src/mesa/vbo/vbo_exec_draw.c:278: vbo_exec_vtx_unmap: Assertion `exec-vtx.buffer_ptr != ((void *)0)' failed. The application works fine on another machine with a different chip. The billard game FooBillard++ (http://foobillardplus.sourceforge.net/) still causes the hang immediately. The workaround of using always_flush_cache=true and always_flush_batch=true doesn't work with my application nor with FooBillard++. I was just able to use it to let ideas benchmark running fine prior to the fix. I've not tested Chrome yet but I can do it if it can be useful. Thank you Kenneth for the fix and for any further help. I'd really like to use Linux on this machine for my developments. If I can help somehow let me know. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1388612 Title: [GM965] GPU lockup running OpenGL applications on Dell Vostro 1510 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/mesa/+bug/1388612/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1415420] [NEW] Xorg freeze
Public bug reported: Dear developers and experts, I have a Dell Inspiron 14z, using Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS, kernel 3.13.0-44-generic and using i915 as my video driver. I tried connecting an external monitor to my laptop using the HDMI output while running Unity. I used an HDMI-VGA converter to connect it to the monitor's VGA input. When I do that (before I try to type xrandr or try to configure the new monitor), I'm back to the login screen, being shown in both my laptop screen and the external monitor and both screens are frozen. I can only do a hard reboot at that stage. This is the first time I tried this. I expect apport will include more information from dmesg, Xorg logs, etc, but if it doesn't please let me know and I can try to provide more information. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1326688] Re: Can't disable panning on multiple monitors
I have these problems on a W520 (i.e. Nvidia driver), but on Arch Linux. Still, what I have found, and a workaround: The Nvidia driver will try to make the whole size of the screen (set with xrandr --fb or by placing monitors) accessible with the monitors it has, and if need be with panning. It will ignore or overwrite all attempts to disable that panning if the driver thinks you need it. (It's a feature, they brag about it under question How are virtual screen dimensions determined in TwinView? at http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux- x86_64/346.35/README/configtwinview.html On my setup, I use two external monitors that are connected to the Nvidia card along with the built-in monitor that is connected to the internal Intel chip. The intel chip servers as a Sink provider for the Nvidia driver, so all three monitors form a single screen, like so: xrandr --setprovideroutputsource modesetting NVIDIA-0 xrandr --fb 5760x1200 --output LVDS-1-0 --mode 1920x1080 --pos 3840x120 --output VGA-0 --mode 1920x1200 --pos 1920x0 --output DP-3 --mode 1920x1200 --pos 0x0 The nvidia driver (so it seems) will accept that the whole screen is now 5760x1200 big, but only uses the two monitors that are actually connected to the card to cover that area with panning. So the right- most laptop display worked fine, while the two monitors would pan along left and right. I have worked around this by abusing that while the Nvidia driver ignores or overwrites the core panning parameters, it doesn't meddle with the panning border. I modified the command above like so: xrandr --fb 5760x1200 --output LVDS-1-0 --mode 1920x1080 --pos 3840x120 --panning 5760x1200+0+0/0x0+0+0/-3840/0/0/0 --output VGA-0 --mode 1920x1200 --pos 1920x0 --panning 5760x1200+0+0/0x0+0+0/-1920/0/-1920/0 --output DP-3 --mode 1920x1200 --pos 0x0 --panning 5760x1200+0+0/0x0+0+0/0/0/-3840/0 This sets the borders that trigger the panning so far out that they are all off screen. So panning is technically still enabled but impossible to trigger. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1326688 Title: Can't disable panning on multiple monitors To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/1326688/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

My current workaround is to press reset key, then on next loading screen select the current linux kernal with recovery mode option, followed by resume boot. This brings up the decryption passphrase dialog in terminal, and Ubuntu 14.10 loads completely thereafter. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1364630] Re: init: Error while reading from descriptor: Broken pipe
I have got this problem upgrading three machines from Ubuntu 14.04 to 14.10, two nVidia, one AMD. It's now not possible to log into the AMD one - the desktop is missing and the system is frozen not responding to anything. I have switched to XFCE on that machine and its working fine. The nVidia machines freeze after about 10 mins on standard graphics. They are almost usable if I use the nVidia drivers, but then after 10 minutes the background will stop updating so that moving any windows around leaves an annoying trail, and when minimizing a window it appears as if it is still there. I don't if any of that is related to this bug or not. I'm also suffering from bug 1359439. All in all, this update has been a complete disaster. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers-304 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1364630 Title: init: Error while reading from descriptor: Broken pipe To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/upstart/+bug/1364630/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

I just upgraded a system from Kubuntu 14.04 to Kubuntu 14.10, and the broken pipe error popped up. Some questions for the suffering populace: 1. Does the error occur with 14.04 or only with 14.10? 2. Does it occur with 14.10 installed directly or only with 14.10 upgraded from 14.04? In my experience it is specifically associated with upgrading 14.04 to 14.10 but is not associated with specific video hardware since it has been reported both for Nvidia video and Intel video.
