It seems that this crash always occurred with open source radeon driver
but not with fglrx driver.

BTW, totem can play very good.
libreoffice has this issue with a slides embedded video clip. Seems libreoffice
use same way with mplayer instead of totem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1453052] [NEW] X fails to automatically detect ATI radeon RV600 card

2015-05-08 Thread Raffaele Candeliere
Public bug reported:

Good day.
I'm testing pure EFI boot capability on my iMac 7.1 (graphic card ATI radeon
HD2600 pro).
So far, with Ubuntu 14.10, i've been able to boot directly into a perfectly
working system using the EFI kernel stub.
No GRUB, no ELILO, no rEFIND, no boot manager whatsoever! And the result was
amazing!
Boot up time reduced to a fraction of the time needed by GRUB, for example,
Compiz compositing much more quickly and and efficiently. I could notice even
some graphical detail (e.g. Text shadows in the GDM log-in screen) that were
not present if booting via GRUB.
The way to accomplished this is simple:
1) Create a small (40MB or less) HFS+ partition. E.g. # sudo mkfs.hfsplus
/dev/sdaX -v Ubuntu (EFI-Stub)
2) Copy to the new partition the files vmlinuz-3.XX.YY-ZZ-generic.efi.signed
and initrd.img-3.XX.YY-ZZ-generig. Also rename them to vmlinuz.efi and
initrd.img for sake of simplicity in further command line work. Furthermore,
Apple's EFI won't boot anything that doesn't end with the .efi extension.
3) Create a boot entry in the NVRAM using efibootmgr like this: # sudo
efibootmgr -d /dev/sdX -p Y -c -L Ubuntu 14.04 LTS -l /vmlinuz.efi -u
root=UUID=b0c4efb9-95b0-4e5d-98e1-8beb43f413c2 ro rootflags=subvol=@  quiet
splash initrd=\initrd.img
4) reboot (and enjoy!)

As i've said, in Ubuntu 14 all this is working fine, but after the upgrade to
Ubuntu 15, X doesn't start anymore. The system starts up correctly but X
fails (with error: (EE) No devices detected. (EE) Fatal server error: (EE) no
screens found) dropping me to a tty console login.
I'm not shure if it is a X problem or a kernel KMS bug, but i'm more inclined
to think of a problem with X because i've tried to boot Ubuntu 15.0 with the
old kernel (3.13/16) and the problem is still there.
I've also tried to add vt.handoff=7 to the command line args for the kernel,
like grub does, but the result is even worse. The system freezes completely at
the moment of starting X.
Please note also that booting via grub is working. X starts, much more slowly
but starts. (Actually i'm reporting this bug from the very same system booted
using GRUB. I have a second HFS+ partition where i installed grub and i can
access it by holding down the ALT key at power-up)
Thanks for your work. I really hope that booting directly via EFI stubs will
grow mature because the performance increase is really big.
Thanks again.

efibootmgr -d /dev/sdX -p Y -c -L Ubuntu 14.04 LTS -l /vmlinuz.efi -u
root=UUID=b0c4efb9-95b0-4e5d-98e1-8beb43f413c2 ro rootflags=subvol=@  quiet
splash initrd=\initrd.img

I've also tried to add vt.handoff=7 to the command line args for the
kernel, like grub does, but the result is even worse. The system freezes
completely at the moment of starting X.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1452220] Re: screen corruption on resume after suspend

2015-05-08 Thread RaffaeleC
** Description changed:

  Hi all.
Upon resume after a suspend, the screen gets corrupted. It is still readable
(and usable) but the graphical output is like covered with a fine grid of
vertical white lines, each (apparently) 1px wide, interleaved with 1px lines
from the underlying real image, so that the effect is similar to a grayed-out
image. Mouse is visible (and working). Writings are (almost) visible too, so
that the the system is (hardly) usable, but the only way to restore proper
video functionality is reboot. Useless to switch to a text-only tty and back
(ctrl-alt f2 followed by alt f7).

I was able to resolve this on trusty doing the following:

sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg xserver-xorg-video-intel (and all the
depends)

then reboot.

Just FYI, i'm on -30 kernel, and using ubuntu-mate as as desktop.

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

The Unity environment is loaded but the screen is completely unusable.
The only clearly visible thing is the mouse cursor which can be moved.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1453306] Re: Xorg freeze

2015-05-08 Thread John Ioannidis
This is almost certainly a duplicate of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1447751

The OP for that bug never uploaded the apport reports, and since I could
not simply add them there, I had to create a new bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1453306] [NEW] Xorg freeze

2015-05-08 Thread John Ioannidis
Public bug reported:

Running a freshly-installed 15.04, fully-updated, on an Intel NUC5i5RYK
(with an up-to-date bios). Connected to three Dell U2415 monitors,
daisy-chained using the DP output.

As you can see from Xorg.0.log, all three monitors are detected, and the
framebuffer is set to 5760 x 1200 (3 * 1920 x 1200).

This problem only manifests itself when connected to more than one
monitor.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1453302] [NEW] Linux kernel freeze (it seems in current/3.19.0-17) on Dell Inspiron 1525

2015-05-08 Thread Páll Haraldsson
Public bug reported:

First READ about how I deceived ubuntu-bug!

I'm not sure it matters or what info ubuntu-bug collects, but I didn't
do ubuntu-bug linux since it gave an error:

Problem in linux-image-3.19.0-13-generic

The problem cannot be reported:

This is not an official Ubuntu package. Please remove any third party
package and try again.

I did ubuntu-bug Xorg just to get some collection of info, NOT saying
xorg is the fault.

Note that this bug report is NOT about that kernel but the most current
(and maybe one or two others).

Yesterday I wasn't having this problem with kernels (at least not the
newest one I had not installed.. I may have had different problems, do
not believe hardware broken though).

$ ls -lrt /boot/initrd.img-3.1*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 19976179 apr 10 17:20 /boot/initrd.img-3.13.0-47-generic
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 21779681 apr 11 14:54 /boot/initrd.img-3.19.0-13-generic
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 21782845 apr 19 13:54 /boot/initrd.img-3.19.0-15-generic
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 21733320 maí 8 20:26
/boot/initrd.img-3.19.0-15-lowlatency
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 21780289 maí 8 21:04 /boot/initrd.img-3.19.0-17-generic

I believe I've been running 3.19.0-15-generic for the last few days. I
just run the most recent one (usually - but not now because of the
problems below).

Today (this evening) I upgraded some stuff including the kernel.
3.19.0-17 does not boot up. I've tried several times and get a blank
screen. I may have gotten something else, a splash-screen (not as far as
login-screen), on the first try. DO not count on that as I may
misremember.

Then booting into 3.19.0-15-generic I could log in, so it seems the
kernel above is the problem. Note I also upgraded more, say networking.
AND now while I can log in, that kernel quickly froze (twice just after
starting Chrome w/lots of tabs) - in a way I've never seen - the CAPS
LOCK and the light to the RIGHT (NOT NUM LOCK to the left) where
blinking in sync. I may have forgotten (or not?) to try a virtual
terminal as this seemed a sure indication that something was wrong.

[I also booted into just-installed 3.19.0-15-lowlatency and got the
blinking lights.]

Then I booted into 3.19.0-13 and am now for a much longer time in
Chrome, so far no freeze..

[I was doing apt-get autoclean today, deleting kernels, so maybe I'm
wrong about the exact version of the kernel I was running without
problems, but at least all the info on kernels that do not work are
right.]

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1453302] Re: Linux kernel freeze (it seems in current/3.19.0-17) on Dell Inspiron 1525

2015-05-08 Thread Páll Haraldsson
I was going to upload syslog with the correct info (what ubuntu-bug
uploads seems only about since current boot).

It seems the freeze is that severe (nothing on 3.19.0-17) or early that
nothing gets appended to syslog.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1411117] Re: Touchpad pointer gets stuck often

2015-05-08 Thread 1guess
After some patches to 14.10 the issue appears to have disappeared. At a guess I
would say a kernel update has resolved the issue.
I have since upgraded to 15.04 and it is working without issue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1432194] Re: Graphics unstable on Ubuntu 14.04 and 14.10 using Intel HD Graphics 5500

2015-05-08 Thread Gerry Donlon
Still the same problem for me on 3.16.0-37-generic after a fresh
install. (But at least now I'm able to boot)

Easily reproducible by opening up Google maps, all text becomes garbled.
Other programs that require slight 3d rendering also cause this issue.
15.04 works fine. I suppose I'll try the information above and see how
it goes.
