[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1751414] Re: [regression] Missing Wayland login option and missing GL acceleration, after installing mesa-utils-extra 8.4.0

2018-02-23 Thread Nish Aravamudan
I believe a transition might going on right now, but I would need to
defer to Timo to be sure. There is ana newer libglvnd in bionic-proposed
that might be worth testing.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1750937] Re: 4.4.0-116 Kernel update on 2/21 breaks Nvidia drivers (on 14.04 and 16.04)

2018-02-23 Thread Kaan Akşit
Having the exact same issue with nvidia-390 package at my Ubuntu 16.04,
rolled back to nvidia-387 and had the same issue. And later I rolled
back nvidia-384, and still the same issue.

Then I downloaded NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-384.111.run from Nvidia's website
to see if I am able to get it up and running as Jason claimed in his
earlier post. Started installing the manual driver by killing the x
server. It prompt as unable to load the kernel module 'Nvidia.ko'.
Simply installation failed.

I am curious to find out how Jason switched to that version of Nvidia
drivers.

So for the one last time I tried removing all nvidia-* packages, and
tried installin nvidia-331 package from the repository... and the result
is the same on my end.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1750937] Re: 4.4.0-116 Kernel update on 2/21 breaks Nvidia drivers (on 14.04 and 16.04)

2018-02-23 Thread Thomas Norton
I purged the -116 packages and then re-installed them but it didn't
help. What's worse, is that now Unity doesn't work in -112, but
fortunately my Gnome session still works fine.

Here are the commands I executed to reinstall the -116 kernel:
sudo apt-get purge linux-image-4.4.0-116-generic
sudo apt-get purge linux-headers-4.4.0-116-generic
sudo apt-get purge linux-headers-4.4.0-116
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install linux-generic-lts-xenial

My gcc version is 6.3.0-18ubuntu2~16.04

Can someone help?

Just to be sure, I just reinstalled the -116 kernel as suggested by

Any ideas?

2018-02-23 Thread henczati
Hi, same here, after kernel update no nvidia-340.

Tried the manual dkms rebuild, but no retpoline in vermagic afterwards
either.

Checked gcc: apt says 4:4.8.2-1ubuntu6, but /usr/bin/gcc says
4.8.5-1ubuntu1~14.04 .
`which gcc` confirms using /usr/bin/gcc

What about that?

2018-02-23 Thread Bill Miller
** Description changed:

Running fine with nvidia-384 until this kernel update came along. When
booted into the new kernel, got super low resolution and nvidia-settings
was missing most of its functionality - could not change resolution.

Rebooted into 4.4.0-112 kernel and all was well.
+
+ The root cause of the problem has been found to be installing the -116
+ kernel without a sufficiently updated version of gcc. In my case, my
+ system received the gcc update AFTER the kernel update.
+
+ Uninstalling the -116 kernel and reinstalling it with the updated
+ version of gcc solved the problem for me.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1750937] Re: 4.4.0-116 Kernel update on 2/21 breaks Nvidia drivers (on 14.04 and 16.04)

2018-02-23 Thread Mythological
John (earthspike), you said your version is

gcc-4.8.real (Ubuntu 4.8.4-2ubuntu1~14.04.4) 4.8.4

but when I run gcc --version I get just

gcc (Ubuntu 4.8.4-2ubuntu1~14.04.4) 4.8.4

The version number appears to be the same but instead of gcc-4.8.real I
only see gcc. Is that a significant difference, or just something
related to different hardware perhaps?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1750937] Re: 4.4.0-116 Kernel update on 2/21 breaks Nvidia drivers (on 14.04 and 16.04)

2018-02-23 Thread John
My 14.04 machine received the gcc update after the -116 update, just as
others have noted.

I resolved this by booting into -112 then:

sudo apt-get purge linux-headers-4.4.0-116 linux-headers-4.4.0-116-generic
sudo apt-get install linux-generic-lts-xenial

And then rebooted into -116 with everything working.

I think this is easier and less likely to run into later problems than
trying to manually rebuild DKMS modules.

For reference,

$ gcc --version
gcc-4.8.real (Ubuntu 4.8.4-2ubuntu1~14.04.4) 4.8.4

The modinfo command does return the string shown above, so my question
is this, right now this machine is booted into the -112 kernel. Can I
run those two "sudo dkms" while still in the -112 kernel, or does it
have to be booted into -116 first? And also, if I do this, will it only
affect the -116 kernel? In other words, if for some reason this doesn't
work, will it still be able to boot into -112 with no changes to the
nVidia graphics in that kernel?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1750937] Re: 4.4.0-116 Kernel update on 2/21 breaks Nvidia drivers (on 14.04 and 16.04)

2018-02-23 Thread Glen Pike
I had the same problem with my -116 kernel upgrade.

So I am running `gcc version 5.4.1 20160904 (Ubuntu
5.4.1-2ubuntu1~16.04)` but this was already installed it seems - I can't
see in the dpkg.log* files when this was added. I am assuming that this
is a newer version of GCC than is needed, but how do I know it contains
the reptoline stuff needed to compile my dkms modules - as I said, it
didn't come down with the update.

Can you just clarify that I should uninstall & reinstall my -116 kernel
to fix the issue, or do I need a different version of GCC?

Thanks

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1750937] Re: 4.4.0-116 Kernel update on 2/21 breaks Nvidia drivers (on 14.04 and 16.04)

2018-02-23 Thread Clifford Mather
I took the *-116 kernel a few days ago on my 16.04.3 desktop, got a
mouse freeze after booting, and went back to *-112.

I see from my dpkg.log that version 5.4.0-6ubuntu1~16.04.9 of gcc
installed over a day before the *-116 kernel. I see also from
https://ubuntu.pkgs.org/16.04/ubuntu-updates-main-amd64/gcc-
5_5.4.0-6ubuntu1~16.04.9_amd64.deb.html that the .8 version added
support for thunk-extern, which is needed to build the Spectre retpoline
changes. So at least in my case, the gcc version seemed sufficient to
build DKMS drivers at the time of the *-116 kernel upgrade.

I also am seeing kernel panics from other DKMS drivers on the *-116
kernel, and on other kernels that have merged the Spectre retpoline
changes.

Is there something in the -116 kernel that's so great, and time

2018-02-23 Thread gumbeto
That was it Jay Flory! I too had a different version of gcc in my 16.04
installation (an upgrade I got from the ubuntu-toolchain-r ppa, which I
used in order to test something with gcc-7).

I use Timeshift, so I was able to go back to before adding the ppa.
Upgrading normally from that point, while using the gcc that came from
the official repos (gcc (Ubuntu 5.4.0-6ubuntu1~16.04.9) 5.4.0 20160609)
I did not have any problems any more: everything loaded happily with
-116.

Thanks :)

Unfortunately I don't currently have a 14.04 installation so I don't
know which versions of gcc are available to you. I am using the package
"gcc-5" from the Xenial (16.04) repositories and it is working. You may
also want to check:

1. "which gcc"
a. Make sure this points to the version of gcc that you expect.
b. '/usr/bin/gcc'
2. "gcc --version"

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1750937] Re: 4.4.0-116 Kernel update on 2/21 breaks Nvidia drivers (on 14.04 and 16.04)

2018-02-23 Thread Tim Habigt
Yes, I also got the gcc update after the kernel update. With the new
gcc, I could fix the Nvidia kernel module.

Here's how:
# Show the current vermagic string of the kernel module
modinfo nvidia-384 -k 4.4.0-116-generic

# It will probably say:
# vermagic: 4.4.0-116-generic SMP mod_unload modversions
# Here the retpoline string is missing.
# You can fix this by removing and re-building the module with DKMS

sudo dkms remove nvidia-384/384.111 -k 4.4.0-116-generic
sudo dkms install nvidia-384/384.111 -k 4.4.0-116-generic

# After that the modinfo command will show
# vermagic: 4.4.0-116-generic SMP mod_unload modversions retpoline

You can now use the new kernel. You will probably have to do this with
all your DKMS kernel modules.

Jay Flory, your information was the key! I removed the -116 kernel and
reinstalled it, and the graphics are fine now. It looks like this was
indeed due to a timing problem between when my system got the gcc update
and the kernel update.

It appears that I'll have to reinstall virtualbox as well.

Thanks so much for sharing your insight.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1750937] Re: 4.4.0-116 Kernel update on 2/21 breaks Nvidia drivers (on 14.04 and 16.04)

2018-02-23 Thread Jay Flory
The newer Ubuntu kernel has the new retpoline Spectre mitigation. In
order to load, your kernel modules will need to be compiled with a
version of gcc that supports retpoline. You can determine if the module
has it with the command "modinfo " and look for the version
magic.

If you are using DKMS then your kernel modules should have updated
automatically. However this depends on the version of gcc in use.

If you are using a Ubuntu version of gcc, then gcc probably updated when
you got the newer kernel. The changes to gcc necessary to support
retpoline should have been backported to most active versions of gcc.
However if you have installed a custom version of gcc then your kernel
module probably will not build correctly.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1750393] Re: Blank screen with only mouse pointer after mesa driver update; display does not switch to tty7 upon lightdm start; Xorg.0.log quickly grows

2018-02-23 Thread Jamie C.
This issue has a workaround:

Download 7.9 radeon driver Ubuntu package (xserver-xorg-video-radeon-
hwe-16.04_7.9.0-0ubuntu1~16.04.1_amd64.deb) from:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/xenial/amd64/xserver-xorg-video-radeon-
hwe-16.04/1:7.9.0-0ubuntu1~16.04.1

Execute the following on the downloaded .deb file:

> sudo dpkg -i xserver-xorg-video-radeon-
hwe-16.04_7.9.0-0ubuntu1_16.04.1_amd64.deb

> sudo apt-get -f install

> sudo apt-mark hold xserver-xorg-video-radeon-hwe-16.04

This downgrades the radeon driver package to version 7.9, fixes dependencies,
and holds the driver pkg from further updates.

Upon rebooted, issue is resolved.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1750937] Re: 4.4.0-116 Kernel update on 2/21 breaks Nvidia drivers (on 14.04 and 16.04)

2018-02-23 Thread Hanno Stock (hefe_bia)
This does not only affect the NVIDIA modules, but seems to affect all
kernel modules built on the system itself. (Meaning all DKMS-built
modules and for example VMWare Workstation/Player modules)

2018-02-23 Thread Seth Forshee
It's been suggested that this driver should be removed as it's not
longer maintained (bug 1748000), so I'm not sure what the fate of this
patch will be.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1751269] [NEW] Compiz related bug (Endianness bug somewhere)

2018-02-23 Thread geppo61
Public bug reported:

Hello,
I suspect a endianness problem in this BigEndian Machine (Apple PowerBook G4
with ATI Radeon Mobility 9700). The same architecture (bigEndian) shows no this
specific issue on PowerMac G5 Quad with PCI-Express ATI Radeon HD4670 with VGA
BIOS (not powerpc flashed card).

The problem seems to be a screen changing resolution or similar having
Compiz activated. If I switch the screen resolution on this laptop, the
garbage on the screen is more visible than using NO COMPOSITE Marco Mate
Display Manager.

The problem is enhanced using a second monitor attached to a DVI
connector on this laptop.

Can be easly reproduced.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1535048] Re: i915 driver seems to cause system crash at random

2018-02-23 Thread melenzb
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1554613 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1554613

Tried it and lo and behold, I got a crash eventually, although it took
way longer in the regular usage scenario. I am not sure if the TLP
settings are implemented correctly though. On one occasion i7z told me
turbo mode was enabled although I disabled it n TLP settings.. That was
when I saw the crash happen. I then manually disabled turbo mode " echo
1 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/intel_pstate/no_turbo" after which it showed
that it was indeed disabled. No clue as to why this was the case.

Another thing I notice is that when I configure it to use :

CPU_MIN_PERF_ON_AC=100
CPU_MAX_PERF_ON_AC=100
CPU_MIN_PERF_ON_BAT=0
CPU_MAX_PERF_ON_BAT=100

I expect it to change operatig mode when I plug or unplug the power
cable. I does not however, as i7z reveals. Seems like it sustains the
mode that was to be chosen based on the situation at boot time. It is
not modified during runtime.

All in all I am hoping to discover that effective deactivation of turbo
mode might be the fix for me.

I don't believe my situation is a duplicate of bug #1554613.
