[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1769299] [NEW] universal access zoom unusable

2018-05-04 Thread Ken Anderson
Public bug reported:

Filed by mark on behalf of low vision user Ken. Ken is able to read 56 point
type without magnification at normal reading distance and can barely read the
universal access "large text" from a distance of about 2.5 inches from a 26inch
monitor at 1360x768. So he really needs magnification and a lot more than the
2x default I used here for testing. We do not live in the same town so
providing additional details would be slow.

Turned on zoom from the universal access button on top panel.
Default settings were used including Zoom = 2.0, screen part = full

Several areas are corrupted. These zoom and scroll separately from the
rest of the screen and in a way that severely impairs use as portions
may not ever be visible. Portions of these subwindows cannot be used
because you have to move the mouse off them to be able see them so you
can either see or click but not both.

These areas are:
  - The top panel
  - The left panel (launcher) (intermittently)
  - pull down menus, particularly the universal access pull down from the top
panel

Also, the zoom randomly every couple seconds. jumps to a different position
without the user's consent. This appeared to be because text was printed by a
program running in the terminal window (long apt-get install) but continued to
happen even when that window was minimized and even when that program stopped
printing.

These problems persisted with all the other zoom modes. One mode,
however, created new bugs. With "magnifier extends outside of screen",
you lose the ability to see the top and left panels at all; you can pan
over where they would be but they are not drawn. Can't open the
pulldown menu since there is no icon, so who knows how it would be
rendered.

These bugs made it very difficult to get screenshots, especially with
the defective screenshot program gnome-screenshot which ships with
system. Also, the bug-reporting program did not permitted attaching
additional screenshots once spectacle was installed.

Ubuntu 18.04, fresh install, only a few added packages (ham radio
related, chrome). Not using wayland, though a wayland session runs
concurrently with X11 even though no one has logged in with wayland.

Another problem in making the bug report is the irresponsible practice
of failing to identify the software being used. The accessability man
in circle menu does not have a heading to tell you what program is run
for the accessability menu or any of the functions thus invoked.Nor
does the settings. And there is no tooltip, popup, or about menu item
to convey this information to the user. And running a diff on ps
doesn't show any new processes started when zoom is turned on.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1757180] Re: nvidia-prime can't switch off the discrete GPU

2018-05-04 Thread Артем
I think I understand the error. Sorry for my English.
Ubuntu 18.04. After installing nvidia drivers, nouveau modules are added to the
modprobe blacklist. The path /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch disappears.
To turn off the nvidia graphics card, prime-select creates a symlink in
/etc/systemd. It tries to write /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch, but
there is no such path and nothing happens.

I have a Lenovo T430.

2018-05-04 Thread Tom
@Bernadette: If I would have same situation again, I think I would:

1 - Ctrl-Alt-F3/2 at login prompt
2 - sudo apt purge nvidia*
3 - sudo apt install nvidia-390
4 - sudo prime-select intel
5 - sudo nvidia-xconfig
6 - sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
7 - .. and replace with contents of #117
8 - sudo nano /etc/default/grub
9 - .. GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="'quiet splash acpi_osi=Linux acpi_osi=!
acpi_osi=Windows 2009' nouveau.runpm=0"
10- sudo update-grub
11 - sudo reboot
12 - login...
13 - and start praying...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1752938] Re: Upgrading Ubuntu 18.04 disables GPU hardware acceleration

2018-05-04 Thread Phillip Lord
My problem was solved by the fix suggested in this bug:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nux/+bug/1767468

I don't know if mine is the same problem as reported here, but worth a
try.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1768906] Re: Xorg crash

2018-05-04 Thread Cyrus Harmon
This happens with all combination of (bionic-ish) kernels and drivers
I've tried so far, including:

Drivers: NVIDIA proprietary installer 396.24, nvidia-driver-396
(396.24-0ubuntu0~gpu18.04.1), nvidia-390 (390.48-0ubuntu3+gpu18.04.2)

kernels: 4.15.0-20-lowlatency, a locally built 4.16.3

cards: GTX 770 and GTX 1070ti

I've tried erasing /etc/X11/xorg.conf, running things with and without
nomodeset, etc... all to no avail. Any suggestions for tracking this
down further? thanks!

2018-05-04 Thread Ubuntulearner
@Tarik GRABA My system stuck at ubuntu logo while booting. To resolve it, I've
set nomodeset.
But now it occurs a resolution issue to 1024x768. In 'Try Ubuntu' it worked
well. No such issue. I tried installing 4.16 kernel but not resolved.

I've two HDD in system. In one Ubuntu 16.04.04 installed and other
18.04. No issue with 16.04.04.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1769091] Re: Xorg freeze on login

2018-05-04 Thread Berenyi Lajos
Ubuntu 18.04.
If I give a wrong password during the login, it of course fails, and write an
error message.
But after I give the correct passord, the display freezes, I have to stop the
PC, and start again.
If after the giving the wrong password, I push the cancel and then I give the
correct passord, everything is fine.
This behavior occurs either on my real laptop either on vitualbox gest.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1768906] Re: Xorg crash

2018-05-04 Thread Cyrus Harmon
I'm not exactly clear what you mean by purging and settings removal.
I've run uninstall with the proprietary driver (and rebooted) I've used
nvidia-driver-396 and apt-cache remove --purge'd that. I've tried to
video cards now. In short, I've tried everything I can think of, but
still end up with the same problem.
