After installing the nvidia-410 package, as reported in the original post, the EGL test program from the original post doesn't work if linking against libGL.so: $ wget https://gist.githubusercontent.com/funchal/bff0a8d6dae5b3ace1a88c392416b5bc/raw/1427821a2390a30779881ab59c55b5550a468919/main.c $ gcc main.c -lGL -lEGL $ ./a.out egl 1.5 a.out: main.c:53: main: Assertion `renderer' failed. The difference between the packaged and runfile drivers may be due to the dependencies linked into libGL.so (I included a comparison in the stackoverflow post). ** Description changed: Suddenly sometimes during the past two weeks my kubuntu installation has started to freeze up. I can't remember what apt upgrade that caused it, and I have done several the last few days hoping for it to be resolved. I didn't know what was causing it as I hadn't made any other changes expect for the odd apt upgrade. Before that I had just finished a several weeks long session of intense work around the clock without having to reboot even once. Suddenly it is now freezing up within hours. Even without doing anything, just leaving the computer alone. However, yesterday I accidentally discovered that my RAM was filled up. More than filled up, even all swap was full. And before I could close anything down it froze up again. So TLDR; I have today logged the memory consumption while I was handling some bills and linked is a log of constantly increasing Xorg memory usage. So it goes until it chokes the machine and only a hard reboot is possible. My installed RAM is 10GB. Swap is 6GB. Thought I'd add my 2 cents worth. I only just tried adding a second monitor in addition to my laptop a few days ago and had this problem. Tried many of the suggested solutions - none worked. Works OK in windows 10. Also works OK in 16.04. Tried using a HDMI to digital adapter at the monitor - did not work. OK in windows 10. Alas cannot try the adapter at the computer as no digital or dvi plug. xrandr pretty as in others shown above - HDMI-1 disconnected.
