[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 2061298] Re: Screen corruption in Firefox and Thunderbird when using Wayland

2024-04-26 Thread Alistair Cunningham
This appears to only happen if Firefox and Thunderbird are set to use
the "System theme - auto" theme. Manually selecting either the light or
dark theme seems to work around this problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 2061298] [NEW] Screen corruption in Firefox and Thunderbird when using Wayland

2024-04-14 Thread Alistair Cunningham
Public bug reported:

After upgrading from Ubuntu 23.10 to 24.04, Firefox and Thunderbird both
suffer from screen corruption when running with Wayland and virtual
desktops. The main windows are fine, but their tab bars show old data
from other apps in other virtual desktops.

Attached are screenshots of this. The screenshots don't really show the
corruption, but they do show the areas that are corrupted as a grey
"chessboard" pattern.

Apologies if this is filed against the wrong package. If so, please re-
assign it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1882610] Re: Lenovo E590 Graphics problems using standard Ubuntu/Budgie install

2020-06-09 Thread Alistair
I had been recommended by Budgie Developer to submit it as a bug, Im only doing
what they asked me to do:

That’s the whole point of the bug report. The kernel + Mesa should sort out
driver support automatically regardless of manufacturer.
Since you mentioned Lenovo… they recently announced first class support for
linux. But without bug reports they cannot provide that support.

Will do; whats the format for kernel bug report?

For the moment I would report it against xserver-xorg.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1882610] Re: Lenovo E590 Graphics problems using standard Ubuntu/Budgie install

2020-06-09 Thread Alistair
As per my OP: After removing this errant driver, its solved my
applications crashing problems and more. Or if thats not understood,
once the (not recommended) xorg driver was removed, there are no issues
remaining.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1882610] [NEW] Lenovo E590 Graphics problems using standard Ubuntu/Budgie install

2020-06-08 Thread Alistair
Public bug reported:

Ive had major problems (seg errors and various) stopping several apps which
were all working a couple of months ago, on my new Lenovo E590 Thinkpad
notebook.
sudo lspci | grep -i vga
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation UHD Graphics 620 (Whiskey
Lake) (rev 02)

What helped me sort it was the following command: sudo lshw -C display
which showed the driver was xserver-xorg-video-intel which is not recommended;
its older and problematic. Aptitude recommends use system default which is
driver=i915).

After removing this errant driver, its solved my applications crashing
problems and more.

incomplete, is an upstream bug, and the developers are not asking for
further information.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1263319] Re: Touchpad not detected on Dell XPS 13 (9333)

I'm seeing something similar to xian98. I have i2c_hid black listed as

the mouse stops working and I have to reboot.

I'm also using touchpad indicator, and I would guess from its behaviour
that some dbus messages aren't being generated (but haven't had the
opportunity to track it down properly).

This bug has been around since 2011. The nouveau developers have no idea
how to fix it. Unless you can show me a commit which you believe fixes
the problem I'm going to assume it is not fixed.

If you search for VT in the Xorg.1.log you can see it attempts to
start Xorg on VT 7... which is the VT where :0 is running. When
everything works correctly, :1 should be started on VT 8, and the log
confirms it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1256150] Re: Xorg guest session fails to start if the user has logged out and logged in again

2013-11-29 Thread Alistair Buxton
I now know exactly what causes this bug. The problem is that the VT gets
unref'd once when the server shuts down, and then unref'd again much
later when the object gets finalized. This might happen after the VT has
already been allocated and ref'd to another server. This makes lightdm
think the VT is free, when it isn't.

This is an annotated log, with extra debugging code added:

*** I've logged in (once) and now I log out for the first time.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1217585] [NEW] System hangs after some time with nouveau and GT240

2013-08-27 Thread Alistair Buxton
Public bug reported:

With the Nouveau driver I get random system hangs in the Live CD - any
version since it was switched to nouveau up until today's daily images.
It happens after half an hour to a couple of hours usage and affects
installed systems as well, until they are switched to the proprietary
driver.

This is a well known bug in other trackers but I can't see it anywhere
on Launchpad, so I'm reporting it and will add bug watches.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 977588] Re: GPU hangs with PGRAPH TLB flush idle timeout fail

2012-11-08 Thread Alistair Buxton
I just got this crash. I have GT215 based nvidia card too. This card is
notorious for crashing with Nouveau. I got the crash 7 minutes after
installing 12.10, while I was installing the first updates. I hadn't
installed any extra software and nothing was running except for the
default desktop and update manager.

I give up. It seems that apport no longer allows submitting core dumps.
If you want to see the core dump from this bug, you can find it on
errors.launchpad.net somewhere.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 923569] Re: Unity does not recognize twinview settings after crash and manual restart.

2012-03-30 Thread Alistair Buxton
I've noticed this happens with metacity as well. Note that it only
happens when restarting the window manager manually without restarting
X, usually due to a crash and failure to auto-restart. It never happens
during normal use.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 923149] [NEW] Xorg randomly crashes when using xscreensaver and glslideshow

2012-01-28 Thread Alistair Cunningham
Public bug reported:

When using xscreensaver with glslideshow, the X server randomly crashes
after a few hours. Typically, this manifests itself by my coming to the
computer after leaving it overnight, only to find it at the X login
screen. This happens most nights, and sometimes during the day if I
leave the computer long enough. I see the following in Xorg.0.log.old:

Ubuntu is version 11.10.
The xorg package is 1:7.6+7ubuntu7.1.
The machine is a Lenovo Thinkpad W500. lspci -v reports:

related).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 223238] Re: Extremely slow Ajax/Javascript/CSS performance in Firefox 3 using non-free nvidia-glx-new

2010-12-30 Thread Alistair Buxton
My observations (using firefox 3.6.13 and nvidia 260.19.06)

- The problem only happens on launchpad.net. None of the other examples given
on this bug still exhibit the problem. Likely they were all caused by the old
slow javascript engine that was replaced in a version of FF since 3.0. But the
launchpad problem is different because:
- The problem still happens even when javascript is disabled, but it does not
happen if you save the HTML of a launchpad bug and load that.
- The problem gets worse as the firefox window becomes larger. This would seem
to imply something is causing too many fullscreen repaints.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 223238] Re: Extremely slow Ajax/Javascript/CSS performance in Firefox 3 using non-free nvidia-glx-new

2010-12-30 Thread Alistair Buxton
As a test I tried the firefox versions in ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa.

I now have namoroka 3.6.14pre and minefield 4.0b9pre and they are
both *much* faster than the standard maverick firefox when browsing
launchpad.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 223238] Re: Extremely slow Ajax/Javascript/CSS performance in Firefox 3 using non-free nvidia-glx-new

2010-12-30 Thread Alistair Buxton
Please ignore previous comment - it turns out that those versions are
equally affected, including firefox 4.0 beta. And it seems the problem
is made much worse when the graphics card is under load from some other
application doing 3D stuff...

I also find that this bug does not happen in Lucid. I used to see Xorg
using up to 10gb under Karmic when using 3D apps with Nvidia 190. Now in
Lucid it stays at normal levels.

This happens because some headers were moved from include/linux to
include/generated on 2.6.33. You also need to patch a changed ACPI
function call to successfully build.

Steps to reproduce: none, it randomly happens every 5-10 minutes while
using compiz. Cannot reproduce with other (none compositing) WM, nor see
any kind of corruption in opengl games. Switching to VT clears the
corruption until the next time. Nothing freezes or crashes at any point.
