[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1207846] [NEW] Xorg uses max CPU after drm:i915_hangcheck_hung
Public bug reported: Hi guys, apprently my box overheats under high load with more-than-moderate environment temperatures, which triggers the kernel (correctly!) to throttle the CPU. Apparently, this throttling (or some data transfer/DRM issue?) causes the GPU to hang/lose communication (kernel bug? see dmesg. MCE is just talking about temparature recovery), which causes Xorg to misbehave. Both displays go black (from top to bottom, one after another), and come back again, and after that everything is horribly slow, Xorg uses 90something% of the CPU, and otherwise everything seems fine. Switchtig to a VT is bearible and stops Xorg from using CPU, killing it makes lightdm bring it up again and everything is seemingly fine. Same behaviour repeats soon unless load conditions are relaxed. So, this might be two bugs: one for the kernel to let the GPU hang / don't handle this more smartly; one for Xorg to start consuming CPU like crazy after this happened. Please link this bug to the proper packages, and maybe link it to other i915_hangcheck bugs, too.
