[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1566878] Re: Alt-backtick regression
I narrowed this down by doing a bisect dist-upgrade with disk snapshots. I.e. take a snapshot, manually upgrade a few packages, reboot, test, rinse, repeat. The only packages left are the three binary packages mentioned in the bug report. With the snapshot before upgrading those packages, Alt-backtick works. I've verified that after upgrading just these three, the regression occurs. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1566878 Title: Alt-backtick regression To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1566878/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1566878] [NEW] Alt-backtick regression
Public bug reported: dist-upgrading to xorg-server (source package) 2:1.18.3-1ubuntu1 (binary packages xserver-common, xserver-xorg-core, xvfb) introduces a regression for Alt-backtick switching between windows of the same application. Before the upgrade, Alt-backtick works by showing you the switcher and letting you cycle between multiple windows of the same application. After the upgrade, Alt-backtick does nothing. A few more data points. I booted stable Vivid, then dist-upgraded to Wily. When I open the Displays setting, the highest resolution I'm offered is 16:9 at 2560x1440. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1464365] Re: Resolution is incorrect; screen mostly occluded
Through a process of disk snapshotting, apt-mark holding certain packages, and bisecting the dist-upgrade, I've narrowed it down to one of the following packages. I'm unable to narrow it down any further. This is the output of `apt-get dist-upgrade --dry-run` The following packages will be upgraded: xserver-common xserver-xorg-core xserver-xorg-video-ati xserver-xorg-video-intel xserver-xorg-video-nouveau xserver-xorg-video-radeon xserver-xorg-video-vmware xvfb 8 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1281232] Re: control/capslock key swap lost and (almost) no way to recover it
I'm not sure why this was marked Incomplete, and while I appreciate the pointer to the bios update, I don't think it's relevant. This is really about giving back to the user software remapping of keys and modifiers in a user friendly way. xmodmap can do it all but it's far from user friendly. That the Ubuntu desktop *used* to provide this (likely through Gnome) means that this issue *is* a regression in usability. I think it's entirely valid to reassign this issue away from xorg to a more appropriate package (whatever that might be), but not to close it as incomplete because of a bios issue. This isn't hardware specific, and it does affect multiple people. Thanks! ** Changed in: xorg (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1281232 Title: control/capslock key swap lost and (almost) no way to recover it To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1281232/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1396232] [NEW] Xorg freeze
Public bug reported: gnome-do and Xorg/unity/desktop seem to be incompatible on a fresh install of either utopic or vivid. This is either tied to 1080p (1920x1080) or a fresh install of either version. Details as I know them are provided here. I have a brand new machine which is running 1080p to an HDMI monitor. I installed Ubuntu 15.04 fresh from a usb install (usb-creator run from an existing, working vivid machine). As with all new machines, I go through my new install check list: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BarryWarsaw These are slightly out of order, and this problem crops up after doing all the apt-get installs, apt-get update, and apt-get dist-upgrade. After all that, a reboot, and a re-login, the desktop is corrupt and unusable. I see the top menu bar extend from the right but only about 1/8th of the way to the left (the rest is desktop background), the dash only displayes on the lower left about 1/3 of the way up (again, desktop background the rest of the way), and neither the mouse nor the keyboard work at all. I must ssh in to reboot (or hard reboot of course). The system is still operational as the ssh shell works perfectly. The desktop is simply corrupt visually and unresponsive. The login screen after boot seems completely functional though. Mouse works fine as does the keyboard (or I wouldn't be able to log in!). Some additional data points make this even more interesting. On a different disk on this very same machine, I installed OS X 10.10.1, and VMware Fusion 7.0.1. Inside Fusion, I installed Vivid from daily live build iso of yesterday (11/24/14), and went through the same steps. I get exactly the same corruption and desktop freeze. I took a snapshot of the disk and then installed Utopic fresh from an iso downloaded via the normal www.ubuntu.com download site. In Utopic, I took a disk snapshot, and then I again went through the same apt-get steps and the desktop is again corrupt and frozen. This leads me to believe that one of the packages in my new machine buildout are to blame. I should also mention that in Vivid, I installed vmware-tools but in Utopic I did not. No difference (except that with vmware-tools I can set the display to 1920x1080, i.e. the full physical screen, while without vmware-tools, I cannot get full screen resolution from System Settings - Displays). Oh, I tried booting each of the previous kernels, with no effect. So now, I went back to the Utopic snapshot I took right after installing from iso and confirmed that everything works perfectly fine. Desktop is not corrupt and keyboard/mouse are responsive. Through the process of elimination, I would take a disk snapshot, install a few packages, test login, rinse and repeat. I was able to narrow it down to gnome-do and its dependencies. Specifically, after installing gnome-do and its dependencies, the desktop was broken as described above. Reverting to the disk snapshot pre-install of gnome-do, confirms that everything works fine. So now, I installed gnome-do and its dependencies, witnessed the corruption and freeze, and then ssh'd in and then did `apt-get purge gnome-do apt- get autoremove`. gnome-do and its dependencies were removed, I rebooted, logged in and everything was fine again. I went back to the Vivid disk snapshot, purged gnome-do and autoremoved, and *its* desktop was fixed. Clearly the problem is related to gnome-do in both Utopic and Vivid and/or one of its dependencies. After submitting this bug I will reboot back into Vivid running natively on the hardware, ssh in, purge gnome-do and its dependencies and see what happens. I suspect the desktop will be fixed again. As if this is not interesting enough, I have two other desktops currently running Vivid, and both have gnome-do installed, *and* both work perfectly well! The big difference here is that both of them have been dist-upgraded to Vivid through existing Utopic releases, and before that, even Trusty. IOW, both machines were running at least Trusty, upgraded to Utopic, upgraded to Vivid, and work perfectly fine. No desktop corruption, no freezes. (One machine has been upgraded successively since at least Precise; both machines are now on the 'devel' channel.) I'm happy to continue helping with this in any way necessary. Let me know if you need any other information or have anything you want me to test. I will let you bugtask this to unity and/or gnome-do or some other dependency, as you see fit. Thanks! [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1284134] Re: Xorg crash
One other note: I am fully dist-upgraded on Trusty (no held back packages), but I cannot run the 3.13.0-16-generic #36 kernel because that exhibits the log in freeze of LP: #1289410. So at grub select Advanced options for Ubuntu and boot the 3.13.0-15.generic kernel. This allows me to log in and reproduce the bug. @Brad thanks for trying to reproduce. Note that when I hit Alt to bring up the launcher, just type enough of Terminal to see it in Applications. Then I use the arrow keys to select the Terminal. I actually don't think it matters *how* gnome-terminal is started though. Same thing happens if you start it with Gnome Do. I just wanted to eliminate one non-standard package from the mix. The problem clearly is that even just starting Emacs 24 corrupts something in X. Emacs doesn't even have to be running when you crash X, hence the suggestion to start it and then immediately kill it before triggering the bug. Also @Brad: you could take a disk snapshot, then dist-upgrade away your held packages. It would then be easy to restore the disk snapshot if things break for you. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-vmware in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1284134 Title: Xorg crash To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1284134/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

More fun facts: If, after you start up emacs -q, you immediate quit it, the recipe in #5 still crashes X. Starting non-X emacs (e.g. `emacs -nw` in a terminal) does not crash X. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1265406] Re: X server regression on VMware Fusion with OpenGL 2.1 enabled
By the process of elimination, I've determined that the bug is in binary package libxatracker2 (source package mesa). If I apt-mark hold that binary package and dist-upgrade everything else, all is good. If I then upgrade that package, I end up with broken OpenGL support. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1039157] [NEW] X problems in Fusion guest
Public bug reported: LP: #1039097 describes a problem with very tiny fonts on the login page. Somehow I managed to get logged into the desktop and after readjusting the monitor display level I have normal sized fonts (though afaict, not on the login page still). However, now I get lots of corruption in windows, with odd repainting, left over crud when windows are cycled forward, and no repaints of dialogs until the cursor moves over the window. All of this started happening with the latest (i.e. today's) updates to 12.10. Yesterday, running 12.10 on the same machine worked just fine. As described in LP: #1039097, this is in a 12.10 host running in Fusion 4.1 on OS X 10.6. I do have 3D acceleration enabled for the guest. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 839601] [NEW] Xorg freeze
Public bug reported: Before today, and for a few weeks now, the freeze would happen intermittently, maybe once or twice a day. At first it seemed to be associated with Chromium because it would happen when I scrolled a web page or clicked on a link. As of today, I've already had 5 freezes, while doing very little. Once, Chromium wasn't even running, only a Terminal and Emacs. Every freeze leaves the machine responsive to ssh but the entire display is frozen (e.g. no output on irc terminals). Reboot is required to unstuck. I have exactly the same problem with my HD4670. I've been commenting about this on bug 387013 but I'll start interacting on this one instead. Let me know if there's anything useful I can post about it (my xorg log file is posted over there). Note that I've tried Bryce's PPA which doesn't seem to help. -- [Karmic] Xorg crash after login. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 387013] Re: Ubuntu unusable by default with ATI HD4670 video card + monitor on DVI link (blank screen).
I've just tried Bryce's PPA. Boot gets to the login screen, but all attempts to log in with a Gnome session fails. I get the Star Trekian transporter effect, then the screen flashes to black, and then I'm right back at the login prompt. An xterm session does succeed. This is all I have in my .xsession-errors file: /etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup... Setting IM through im-switch for locale=en_US. Start IM through /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/all_ALL linked to /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/default. -- Ubuntu unusable by default with ATI HD4670 video card + monitor on DVI link (blank screen). https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/387013 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Heh. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 387013] Re: Ubuntu unusable by default with ATI HD4670 video card + monitor on DVI link (blank screen).
This issue may affect me too. I just grabbed 64bit Karmic alpha 5 and tried to boot from CD. I cannot get a working graphics desktop even in safe mode. I see the splash screen and the little rising transporter room effect, the cursor spins and then goes blank. Then the splash screen comes back and the whole cycle repeats a few times. Eventually, I end up with a screen of complete trash. It's colorful and pretty but unusable ;). I can't even get a safe mode desktop on which to try the PPA (if it's still relevant for alpha 5). This is a brand new i7-920 with an ATI HD4670. It has only Vista on it currently but I plan to dual-boot and would like to skip Jaunty and go straight to a fresh Karmic install. Note that I've booted Jaunty from CD and had to do nothing special to get a usable desktop, although compiz does not work. I've got a dual-head setup with two 1900x1200 Dell monitors. I'm happy to help test things if I can get a usable desktop. Please advise. (Bryce, feel free to ping me on irc). ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = New -- Ubuntu unusable by default with ATI HD4670 video card + monitor on DVI link (blank screen). https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/387013 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
