Has there been any updates to this in either the Zesty security channel
or Artful? It's a pretty serious regression.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1566878] Re: Alt-backtick regression

2016-04-06 Thread Barry Warsaw
I narrowed this down by doing a bisect dist-upgrade with disk snapshots.
I.e. take a snapshot, manually upgrade a few packages, reboot, test,
rinse, repeat. The only packages left are the three binary packages
mentioned in the bug report. With the snapshot before upgrading those
packages, Alt-backtick works. I've verified that after upgrading just
these three, the regression occurs.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1566878] [NEW] Alt-backtick regression

2016-04-06 Thread Barry Warsaw
Public bug reported:

dist-upgrading to xorg-server (source package) 2:1.18.3-1ubuntu1 (binary
packages xserver-common, xserver-xorg-core, xvfb) introduces a
regression for Alt-backtick switching between windows of the same
application. Before the upgrade, Alt-backtick works by showing you the
switcher and letting you cycle between multiple windows of the same
application. After the upgrade, Alt-backtick does nothing.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1440564] Re: please use Python3 for all scripts

2016-02-18 Thread Barry Warsaw
As it turns out, xdiagnose was still Depending on Python 2. I completed
the port by switching to --buildsystem=pybuild and dropping all Python
2-isms. I have a diff, attached here, that completes the port to
Python 3 (hence why I re-opened this bug). Before I upload it though,
perhaps Didier could give it a sanity check?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1464365] Re: Resolution is incorrect; screen mostly occluded

2015-09-12 Thread Barry Warsaw
A few more data points.

I booted stable Vivid, then dist-upgraded to Wily. When I open the
Displays setting, the highest resolution I'm offered is 16:9 at
2560x1440. There's no option to go to 3440x1440, which is the native
resolution of this monitor.

Debian unstable seems to have no problems displaying at the native
resolution.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1464365] Re: Resolution is incorrect; screen mostly occluded

2015-06-17 Thread Barry Warsaw
Through a process of disk snapshotting, apt-mark holding certain
packages, and bisecting the dist-upgrade, I've narrowed it down to one
of the following packages. I'm unable to narrow it down any further.
This is the output of `apt-get dist-upgrade --dry-run`

The following packages will be upgraded:
  xserver-common xserver-xorg-core xserver-xorg-video-ati
  xserver-xorg-video-intel xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
  xserver-xorg-video-radeon xserver-xorg-video-vmware xvfb

Conf xvfb (2:1.17.1-0ubuntu4 Ubuntu:15.10/wily [amd64])

The other bit of information I can give is that if I apt-mark unhold all
of these except xserver-xorg-video-vmware, when I reboot I get a low
graphics warning and get dumped into a text console. If I unhold them
all, I get the screen occlusion as described above.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1464365] [NEW] Resolution is incorrect; screen mostly occluded

2015-06-11 Thread Barry Warsaw
Public bug reported:

I have a 3440x1440 monitor and after today's full dist-upgrade, most of
the screen real-estate is unusable. I see a small rectangular patch in
the lower left corner, and on this patch I can right-button to bring up
the menu. While the rest of the screen will display the cursor, it is
neither the correct background color (nor can it be set to the right
color; it's just black), and the rest of the screen will not respond to
mouse clicks at all.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1462398] Re: wily boot is completely frozen

2015-06-05 Thread Barry Warsaw
After bisecting the dist-upgrade, apt-mark holding various packages
until I found the culprit.

It's either xserver-common, xserver-xorg-core, or xvfb (probably not the
latter).

If I unhold the first two and dist-upgrade, I see the freeze.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1281232] Re: control/capslock key swap lost and (almost) no way to recover it

2015-02-15 Thread Barry Warsaw
I'm not sure why this was marked Incomplete, and while I appreciate the
pointer to the bios update, I don't think it's relevant. This is really
about giving back to the user software remapping of keys and modifiers
in a user friendly way. xmodmap can do it all but it's far from user
friendly. That the Ubuntu desktop *used* to provide this (likely
through Gnome) means that this issue *is* a regression in usability.

I think it's entirely valid to reassign this issue away from xorg to a
more appropriate package (whatever that might be), but not to close it
as incomplete because of a bios issue. This isn't hardware specific,
and it does affect multiple people.

Thanks!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1396232] [NEW] Xorg freeze

2014-11-25 Thread Barry Warsaw
Public bug reported:

gnome-do and Xorg/unity/desktop seem to be incompatible on a fresh
install of either utopic or vivid. This is either tied to 1080p
(1920x1080) or a fresh install of either version. Details as I know
them are provided here.

I have a brand new machine which is running 1080p to an HDMI monitor. I
installed Ubuntu 15.04 fresh from a usb install (usb-creator run from an
existing, working vivid machine). As with all new machines, I go
through my new install check list:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BarryWarsaw

These are slightly out of order, and this problem crops up after doing
all the apt-get installs, apt-get update, and apt-get dist-upgrade.
After all that, a reboot, and a re-login, the desktop is corrupt and
unusable. I see the top menu bar extend from the right but only about
1/8th of the way to the left (the rest is desktop background), the dash
only displayes on the lower left about 1/3 of the way up (again, desktop
background the rest of the way), and neither the mouse nor the keyboard
work at all. I must ssh in to reboot (or hard reboot of course). The
system is still operational as the ssh shell works perfectly. The
desktop is simply corrupt visually and unresponsive. The login screen
after boot seems completely functional though. Mouse works fine as does
the keyboard (or I wouldn't be able to log in!).

Some additional data points make this even more interesting.

On a different disk on this very same machine, I installed OS X 10.10.1,
and VMware Fusion 7.0.1. Inside Fusion, I installed Vivid from daily
live build iso of yesterday (11/24/14), and went through the same steps.
I get exactly the same corruption and desktop freeze. I took a snapshot
of the disk and then installed Utopic fresh from an iso downloaded via
the normal www.ubuntu.com download site. In Utopic, I took a disk
snapshot, and then I again went through the same apt-get steps and the
desktop is again corrupt and frozen. This leads me to believe that one
of the packages in my new machine buildout are to blame.

I should also mention that in Vivid, I installed vmware-tools but in
Utopic I did not. No difference (except that with vmware-tools I can
set the display to 1920x1080, i.e. the full physical screen, while
without vmware-tools, I cannot get full screen resolution from System
Settings - Displays).

Oh, I tried booting each of the previous kernels, with no effect.

So now, I went back to the Utopic snapshot I took right after installing
from iso and confirmed that everything works perfectly fine. Desktop is
not corrupt and keyboard/mouse are responsive. Through the process of
elimination, I would take a disk snapshot, install a few packages, test
login, rinse and repeat. I was able to narrow it down to gnome-do and
its dependencies.

Specifically, after installing gnome-do and its dependencies, the
desktop was broken as described above. Reverting to the disk snapshot
pre-install of gnome-do, confirms that everything works fine. So now, I
installed gnome-do and its dependencies, witnessed the corruption and
freeze, and then ssh'd in and then did `apt-get purge gnome-do apt-
get autoremove`. gnome-do and its dependencies were removed, I
rebooted, logged in and everything was fine again.

I went back to the Vivid disk snapshot, purged gnome-do and autoremoved,
and *its* desktop was fixed. Clearly the problem is related to gnome-do
in both Utopic and Vivid and/or one of its dependencies. After
submitting this bug I will reboot back into Vivid running natively on
the hardware, ssh in, purge gnome-do and its dependencies and see what
happens. I suspect the desktop will be fixed again.

As if this is not interesting enough, I have two other desktops
currently running Vivid, and both have gnome-do installed, *and* both
work perfectly well! The big difference here is that both of them have
been dist-upgraded to Vivid through existing Utopic releases, and before
that, even Trusty. IOW, both machines were running at least Trusty,
upgraded to Utopic, upgraded to Vivid, and work perfectly fine. No
desktop corruption, no freezes. (One machine has been upgraded
successively since at least Precise; both machines are now on the
'devel' channel.)

I'm happy to continue helping with this in any way necessary. Let me
know if you need any other information or have anything you want me to
test.

I will let you bugtask this to unity and/or gnome-do or some other
dependency, as you see fit. Thanks!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1284134] Re: Xorg crash

2014-03-10 Thread Barry Warsaw
It's quite easy and reproducible to crash. Here are the steps:

* Log in
* Hit Alt to bring up the launcher
* Start up gnome-terminal
* In the terminal, type `emacs -q`
* In Emacs 24, hit `Ctrl-x Ctrl-c RET` to quit Emacs.
* Go back to the terminal and double click on its menu bar to globally maximize
the window
* Go to the global menu bar and double click on it to de-maximize the terminal

At this point, X crashes every time.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1284134] Re: Xorg crash

2014-03-10 Thread Barry Warsaw
One other note: I am fully dist-upgraded on Trusty (no held back
packages), but I cannot run the 3.13.0-16-generic #36 kernel because
that exhibits the log in freeze of LP: #1289410. So at grub select
Advanced options for Ubuntu and boot the 3.13.0-15.generic kernel.
This allows me to log in and reproduce the bug.

@Brad thanks for trying to reproduce. Note that when I hit Alt to bring
up the launcher, just type enough of Terminal to see it in
Applications. Then I use the arrow keys to select the Terminal. I
actually don't think it matters *how* gnome-terminal is started though.
Same thing happens if you start it with Gnome Do. I just wanted to
eliminate one non-standard package from the mix.

The problem clearly is that even just starting Emacs 24 corrupts
something in X. Emacs doesn't even have to be running when you crash X,
hence the suggestion to start it and then immediately kill it before
triggering the bug.

Also @Brad: you could take a disk snapshot, then dist-upgrade away your
held packages. It would then be easy to restore the disk snapshot if
things break for you.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1284134] Re: Xorg crash

2014-03-07 Thread Barry Warsaw
I've narrowed it down to some interaction between Terminal and Emacs 24.
You can discount Claws and Gnome Do.

I can reproduce this every time with this recipe:

* reboot
* login
* hit Alt to bring up the launcher
* start up a Terminal
* In the Terminal, enter emacs -q to bring up a vanilla Emacs 24
* Go back to the Terminal and maximize it (i.e. hit the third button from the
left in the menu bar, the square)
* Go to the global menu bar and double click as if de-maximizing the Terminal
* X crashes

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1284134] Re: Xorg crash

2014-03-07 Thread Barry Warsaw
FWIW, neither gnome-terminal nor emacs24 have been updated in a long
while, so this is clearly a regression in the X stack somewhere.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1289410] [NEW] Xorg freeze

2014-03-07 Thread Barry Warsaw
Public bug reported:

This may be a kernel bug, and I'll add a bug task for that.

% uname -a
Linux anarchist 3.13.0-15-generic #35-Ubuntu SMP Mon Mar 3 15:54:59 UTC 2014
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

With this kernel, I can log in just fine. With -16 however, after I
type my password, the screen flashes but my desktop never comes up.
I've left it like this for a few hours and it's a true hang on login.
However, I *can* ssh into the machine, which is how I reboot it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1284134] Re: Xorg crash

2014-03-07 Thread Barry Warsaw
More fun facts:

If, after you start up emacs -q, you immediate quit it, the recipe in #5
still crashes X.

Starting non-X emacs (e.g. `emacs -nw` in a terminal) does not crash X.

Starting multiple terminals does not crash X.

I'm going to try to rebuild Emacs against the current Trusty package set
and see if that can provoke the problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1284134] Re: Xorg crash

2014-03-07 Thread Barry Warsaw
Problem still exhibits with a rebuild of emacs24. I'm still going to
upload a new Debian merge of emacs24 even though it doesn't fix this
problem. Makes some sense though: it should never be possible for an
application to crash X (or cause some data corruption just by running
that allows some other application to crash X ;).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1281232] [NEW] control/capslock key swap lost and (almost) no way to recover it

2014-02-17 Thread Barry Warsaw
Public bug reported:

Probably not an xorg problem, but anyway, after today's dist-upgrade, my
very long standing swap of the control and caps lock keys on my standard
Ubuntu desktop got lost. Now capslock actually is capslock and ctrl is
actually ctrl, despite a my previous settings swapping them.
Unfortunately, it seems like the ability to swap them back has been lost
in System Settings, or gnome-control-center{,.real}.

I will have to resort to xmodmap for now, but please restore the ability
to swap these two keys and to honor previous such settings.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1281232] Re: control/capslock key swap lost and (almost) no way to recover it

2014-02-17 Thread Barry Warsaw
It's worse than that. Several apps are not mapping their menus to the
menubar, and several are not inheriting the Ubuntu desktop theme.
Examples include most prominantly firefox and chromium.

2014-02-17 Thread Barry Warsaw
Another symptom: I have Alt+H rebound to minimize window. This has
worked forever. Now there's a regression where Alt+H will summon the
Help menu. This is even though I have Activate the window menu set to
Disabled and Minimize window set to Alt+H. This used to override the
menu setting, but this has regressed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1265406] Re: libxatracker2 causes OpenGL 2.1 support regression on VMware Fusion

2014-01-21 Thread Barry Warsaw
Comment #7 might have been a little misleading. Here's what's
happening. On Trusty right now I have:

% dpkg-query -W libxatracker2
libxatracker2:amd64 10.0.0-1ubuntu4

If however in the course of normal apt-get upgrades, I install:

% rmadison libxatracker2
 libxatracker2 | 10.0.1-1ubuntu2 | trusty | amd64, armhf, i386, powerpc

Then graphics degrade to llvm low-graphics mode. thus 10.0.1-1ubuntu2
is broken for Trusty on Fusion based VMs.

Currently, I have the package pinned at 10.0.0-1ubuntu4.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1265406] Re: auto-hide leaves small strip of unusable screen

I'm de-duping this because the X server *should* be choosing Gallium 0.4

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1265406] Re: X server regression on VMware Fusion with OpenGL 2.1 enabled

2014-01-04 Thread Barry Warsaw
By the process of elimination, I've determined that the bug is in binary
package libxatracker2 (source package mesa). If I apt-mark hold that
binary package and dist-upgrade everything else, all is good. If I then
upgrade that package, I end up with broken OpenGL support.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1039157] Re: vmwgfx kernel module not loaded by default

2012-09-05 Thread Barry Warsaw
Hi Tim,

On Sep 05, 2012, at 04:54 PM, Tim Gardner wrote:

Barry - its not clear if the attached kern.log in comment #11 is after
you've added vmwgfx to /etc/modules. At any rate, that module is getting
loaded about 20 seconds into the boot:

[ 20.863814] [drm] Initialized vmwgfx 2.4.0 20120209 for :00:0f.0
on minor 0

The vmwgfx module is a PCI device driver and should get auto-loaded by
udev when it sees the PCI device ID 0x15ad:0x0405 which I can see from
your lspci.txt:

00:0f.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: VMware SVGA II Adapter
[15ad:0405] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])

I don't remember actually, but I just disabled the /etc/modules entry and
rebooted. I'll attach my full kern.log, but here are some useful information:

% grep -i vmwgfx /var/log/kern.log
Sep 4 11:40:18 resist kernel: [7.393370] [drm] Initialized vmwgfx 2.4.0

OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 8.1-devel
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.20
OpenGL extensions:

% lsmod | grep vmwgfx

% lspci | grep -i vga

Linux resist 3.5.0-13-generic #14-Ubuntu SMP Wed Aug 29 16:48:44 UTC 2012

That kern.log hit is from yesterday, so definitely when I had the /etc/modules
line enabled. No hit from the reboot today, and the use of llvmpipe clearly
shows that the module isn't getting loaded by default.

Have you made any external updates to VMware or OS/X ?

No. I'm still running Fusion 4.1.3 (build 730298) though I am considering
upgrading to Fusion 5.0 which was recently released. Host is running OS X
10.6.8.

Also please try 'grep -i vmwgfx /lib/modules/`uname -r`/modules*'

% grep -i vmwgfx /lib/modules/`uname -r`/modules*

2012-09-05 Thread Barry Warsaw
On Sep 05, 2012, at 03:11 PM, Joseph Salisbury wrote:

Was there a prior kernel version that did not have this issue?

Yes, but I can't remember exactly which version this broke on. It definitely
worked all through 12.04 and in 12.10 up until whatever upgrade I happened to
do on-or-about 2012-08-20 (when I filed the bug). I'm pretty diligent about
doing once or twice daily upgrades on this machine, so it couldn't have been
much past when the failure started to occur.

From the bug report, it looks like the failure started happening at about
3.5.0-11.11-generic.

I see that the vmwgfx driver is configured to be a module in the kernel config
file:
config.common.ubuntu:CONFIG_DRM_VMWGFX=m

Can you also attach your /var/log/syslog file?

See attached. Note from my previous comment that this is after a reboot
disabling the /etc/modules entry.

One additional request, can you test the latest mainline kernel[0]?

Thanks in advance

[0] http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.6-rc4-quantal/

Yep, I'll give those a shot and report back.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1039157] [NEW] X problems in Fusion guest

2012-08-20 Thread Barry Warsaw
Public bug reported:

LP: #1039097 describes a problem with very tiny fonts on the login page.
Somehow I managed to get logged into the desktop and after readjusting
the monitor display level I have normal sized fonts (though afaict, not
on the login page still). However, now I get lots of corruption in
windows, with odd repainting, left over crud when windows are cycled
forward, and no repaints of dialogs until the cursor moves over the
window.

All of this started happening with the latest (i.e. today's) updates to
12.10. Yesterday, running 12.10 on the same machine worked just fine.
As described in LP: #1039097, this is in a 12.10 host running in Fusion
4.1 on OS X 10.6. I do have 3D acceleration enabled for the guest.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1039157] Re: X problems in Fusion guest

2012-08-20 Thread Barry Warsaw
Until the update which broke this, it definitely *felt* like I had 3D
working. Various animations and most noticeably Gnome Do, but it's
definitely not working now. Disabling 3D acceleration in Fusion and
restarting the guest shows the same corruption, tiny font problem, etc.
So I think you're right that multiple things are going on.

Happy to continue debugging this in any way necessary to help y'all fix
it!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1039157] Re: X problems in Fusion guest

2012-08-20 Thread Barry Warsaw
As an intermediate step, according to this page
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VMware/Tools I installed the open-vm-
tools package. That seemed to go okay, but it still doesn't look like
I'm using 3D:

grep -i open /tmp/glxinfo.txt
OpenGL vendor string: VMware, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 0x300)
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 8.0.4
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.20
OpenGL extensions:

and indeed I'm still getting the window corruption.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1039157] Re: X problems in Fusion guest

2012-08-20 Thread Barry Warsaw
Now, I went back and ran vmware-install.pl and it seemed to build,
however I got this message:

Distribution provided drivers for Xorg X server are used.

Skipping X configuration because X drivers are not included.

A reboot still gives me the tiny fonts, although the text is a bit more
readable.

I get the same glxinfo output so it looks like this didn't help me get
actual 3d acceleration. Suggestions?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1039157] Re: X problems in Fusion guest

2012-08-20 Thread Barry Warsaw
So, with Prf_Jakob's help, I added vmwgfx to /etc/modules and rebooted.
That gave me 3d, no tiny fonts on lightdm, and no llvmpipe based
corruptions. So that's a great workaround, but why isn't vmwgfx being
loaded automatically?

% grep -i 3d /var/log/Xorg.0.log
[ 8.737] (II) vmware(0): Gallium3D XA version: 1.0.0.
[ 8.737] (--) vmware(0): Direct rendering (3D) is enabled.

% grep -i open /tmp/glxinfo.txt
OpenGL vendor string: VMware, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on SVGA3D; build: RELEASE;
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 8.0.4
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.20
OpenGL extensions:

% lsmod | grep vmwgfx

On Sep 20, 2011, at 01:09 AM, Chris Halse Rogers wrote:

Ah. This would appear to be the same as bug #831336, which is reported

still reproduce this Barry?

Hi Chris. I haven't seen it crash since maybe Thursday of last week perhaps.
I do remember some xorg updates around that time so perhaps the problem is
solved. I did seem the repaint issues mentioned in the above bug, but also
haven't seen those in a few days.

Happy to let this one go incomplete, and I'll reopen it if it happens
again.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 839601] [NEW] Xorg freeze

2011-09-02 Thread Barry Warsaw
Public bug reported:

Before today, and for a few weeks now, the freeze would happen
intermittently, maybe once or twice a day. At first it seemed to be
associated with Chromium because it would happen when I scrolled a web
page or clicked on a link. As of today, I've already had 5 freezes,
while doing very little. Once, Chromium wasn't even running, only a
Terminal and Emacs. Every freeze leaves the machine responsive to ssh
but the entire display is frozen (e.g. no output on irc terminals).
Reboot is required to unstuck.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 836945] [NEW] Screen always goes blank after 10 minutes

2011-08-29 Thread Barry Warsaw
Public bug reported:

Even though my screen saver settings say to Turn off after: 1 hour, my

entirely reproducible. I am using the free glx driver with my Radeon HD

The merge proposal looks good to me, and seems to work properly, so I've
approved it. I don't have permission to upload the changes though, so
I've assigned it to mvo, though if someone else can upload it before
then, please do.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 513932] Re: [i945gme] Keyboard not working after upgrade to Lucid

2010-03-26 Thread Barry Warsaw
Interesting. I'm running several Ubuntu versions under Fusion 3 and
have never (to my knowledge) installed the mouseemu package. I'm even
typing this from Lucid in a F3 VM.

ctrl-click works for me as a right button click straight out of the box
w/o mouseemu.

The only thing that works on native OS X that doesn't work on Lucid is
horizontal two-finger scrolling. I've just chalked that up to a Fusion
bug, but maybe not.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 427101] Re: [Karmic] Xorg crash after login. Returns to gdm which then hangs.

2009-09-14 Thread Barry Warsaw
Thanks to Alberto, I am in desktop heaven! Dual-headed, full
resolution, and visual effects.

Here's what worked for me:

* install the proprietary driver
* sudo amdcccle
* configure monitors and desktops through amd's tool
* reboot

Of course, if you don't want to run the proprietary driver, this won't
work for you. Alberto did mention that the card is supposed to be
supported in the free driver, but it's clearly got problems.

2009-09-12 Thread Barry Warsaw
I have exactly the same problem with my HD4670. I've been commenting
about this on bug 387013 but I'll start interacting on this one instead.
Let me know if there's anything useful I can post about it (my xorg log
file is posted over there).

Note that I've tried Bryce's PPA which doesn't seem to help.

2009-09-11 Thread Barry Warsaw
I've just tried Bryce's PPA. Boot gets to the login screen, but all
attempts to log in with a Gnome session fails. I get the Star Trekian
transporter effect, then the screen flashes to black, and then I'm right
back at the login prompt. An xterm session does succeed. This is all I
have in my .xsession-errors file:

/etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup...
Setting IM through im-switch for locale=en_US.
Start IM through /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/all_ALL linked to

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 387013] Re: Ubuntu unusable by default with ATI HD4670 video card + monitor on DVI link (blank screen).

2009-09-10 Thread Barry Warsaw
This issue may affect me too. I just grabbed 64bit Karmic alpha 5 and
tried to boot from CD. I cannot get a working graphics desktop even in
safe mode. I see the splash screen and the little rising transporter
room effect, the cursor spins and then goes blank. Then the splash
screen comes back and the whole cycle repeats a few times.

Eventually, I end up with a screen of complete trash. It's colorful and
pretty but unusable ;). I can't even get a safe mode desktop on which
to try the PPA (if it's still relevant for alpha 5).

This is a brand new i7-920 with an ATI HD4670. It has only Vista on it
currently but I plan to dual-boot and would like to skip Jaunty and go
straight to a fresh Karmic install. Note that I've booted Jaunty from
CD and had to do nothing special to get a usable desktop, although
compiz does not work. I've got a dual-head setup with two 1900x1200
Dell monitors.

I'm happy to help test things if I can get a usable desktop. Please
advise. (Bryce, feel free to ping me on irc).
