Just to update, the PPA that Omegamormegil suggested did not solve the
problem for me. Perhaps this is different from the DRM issue

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 553014] [NEW] Random Black Screen Crashes

2010-03-31 Thread Benjamin Prosnitz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

On fresh installs of beta 1 of Lucid, a number of ATI HD-series card
users have been reporting random crashes (
http://ubuntuforums.org/newreply.php?do=newreplynoquote=1p=9058263 ).
This appears to occur in Radeon HD 2400 and Radeon HD 4800 series
cards.

During one of these crashes, the screen suddenly goes into sleep mode.
The system does not respond to user keyboard input. Additionally, there
is nothing in the logs around the time of the crash. The crashes occur
at random intervals from one minute to 2 hours after booting and do not
appear to be correlated with any particular user action.

** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New
