I had a similar problem, but the screen was not completely blank. I could see that the OS tried to tell me something but it was only pixels in size repeated 4 times. Removing "vga=769" from grub (pressing e) solved the problem. It turned out to be fstab telling me that it couldn't mount a volume waiting for a responce...
