I am experiencing a similar but possibly unrelated issue on a Toshiba A300-1K5, which contains an ATI HD3650. With the ATI driver installed as normal, a standard boot will cause a kernel panic. However, booting in recovery mode, then going to init 5 and running startx does not cause a kernel panic and the graphics work correctly. If any more information would help, please let me know.
