...But not always. Sometimes the boot-up gets to a normal greeter
screen. Often as not, though, I get a blank gray greeter screen. I can
type my password blindly and get in to the GDM, usually. But sometimes I
can't -- because I can't see the underlying screens and have to guess
what field I'm typing into, etc.
I can go to a console via Ctr+{[1-6]} and restart the GDM and then the
greeter screen is normal and I can log in normally.
Also, between screen modes at boot-up and on entering the GDM, there is
ugly flickering and screen garbage that lasts a good second or so.

The bug is still there in a new installation of Trusty GNOME Ubuntu daily built (updated fully) and is still there in my always-updated Saucy installation. It's discouraging to submit a bug report, hear nothing for three months, and then get an email that since nothing has happened on the bug report (ahem!), I should download and install the current daily build of the next release (Trusty). Nevertheless, I finally did just that. The bug is the same. GNOME Ubuntu, whether Saucy or Trusty, is nearly unusuable on my computer because of it. I have to reboot multiple times and sometimes can succeed in logging in. I can go to a console and restart gdm and sometimes successfully get in. Once in a blue moon the greeter screen actually shows up normally. Otherwise, it is gray and I have to try to type my password in blind. Sometimes that works. I have to hit the Enter key first (to set focus on my username, I presume). I can load the OS with nomodeset and get to the greeter screen, but that is really ugly and pretty much a useless approach for my daily needs. Right now in Trusty I have no panels and no menus. If I boot to Saucy and then boot back to Trusty I might have panels again. If I apply nomodeset I might have panels again. I can't find the terminal command to restore the panels, and I haven't had sufficient google-fu to find out how online. My video card is a Radeon HD 4350. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 106060] Re: [r128 1002:5446] Selecting the Molecule screensaver makes the PC freeze. It is completely unresponsive.
My computer running Lucid -- and before the upgrade -- Karmic -- on a 64-bit AMD platform has locked up twice with the screensaver under Lucid. It only does it once in a while. Another time it almost locked up but I was able to get it back after repeated slaps at the Esc key. Unfortunately, I did not look to see what the screensaver is named. It was the one where columns of green text-like figures slide vertically down the screen on a black background. -- [r128 1002:5446] Selecting the Molecule screensaver makes the PC freeze.
