[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1980663] Re: [MIR] false-positives, do not promote

2022-08-24 Thread Didier Roche
netkit-telnet and netkit-telnetd are already in main (even in kinetic-
proposed).

I thus only demoted telnet binary package, coming in kinetic-proposed,
which is the transitional dummy package coming from inetutils (as in
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/inetutils/2:2.3-4/+build/24264390).
I’ll let you track the rest of the migration and thus keep this bug as
"Triaged".

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1876051] [NEW] Default acceleration mode option is none of the 3 nvidia settings option

2020-04-30 Thread Didier Roche
Public bug reported:

As stated on bug #1876052, the default acceleration mode option is none
of the 3 nvidia settings option.

It’s displayed as "Performance mode" when you launch it for the first time,
however:
- default launch is Intel (so no performance mode)
- there is a "Use dedicated card" option (which shouldn't be displayed in
"Performance mode" and this one is triggering software acceleration)
- nvidia settings is only displaying that tab, and selecting another mode, then
selecting it back this one after reboot will display all other tab options, so
nvidia settings knows that the default setting is different from Performance
mode.

It seems nvidia settings is only showing the On demand option for cards that
support it. I suggest thus that our default selection represents a better
option for our users:
- If the card supports On demand acceleration -> select that by default
- If the card doesn’t support On demand acceleration -> select Performance mode
by default
- Remove the current "weird" status it's currently on by default.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1876052] [NEW] Nvidia driver, default configuration, "Use dedicated card option" for app triggers software acceleration

2020-04-30 Thread Didier Roche
Public bug reported:

Fresh install of 20.04 LTS with nvidia binary driver from our archive.
(dual Intel/Nvidia setup)

No setting change has been done. The card supports "On demand".

Tested with Firefox (about:support) and Chrome (config:cpu). Both are showing
the same result:
- default launch -> Intel drive, OK
GL_VENDOR Intel
GL_RENDERER Mesa Intel(R) UHD Graphics 630 (CFL GT2)
GL_VERSION 4.6 (Core Profile) Mesa 20.0.4
- select use dedicated card -> Sofware acceleration! KO
GL_VENDOR Google Inc.
GL_RENDERER Google SwiftShader
GL_VERSION OpenGL ES 3.0 SwiftShader 4.1.0.7

Selecting the option for performance though is worse than not selecting it with
our default configuration.

If you open nvidia-settings, you have only one tab available (which is showing
Performance mode), which is misleading because this is not the mode you are in.
Note that you not on On Demand mode either as selecting it + reboot restores a
an expected behavior (multiple tabs in nvidia-settings).

For completeness, here are the other settings:

* On Demand (manually selected): OK
Right click menu option shows Use dedicated card card option: OK
- default launch -> Intel drive, OK
- select use dedicated card -> Nvidia, OK

* Power saving mode (manually selected): OK
- default launch -> Intel drive, OK

* Performance mode (manually selected, meaning choose another option to change
the default and selecting it back): KO
Right click menu option shows Use dedicated card card option! KO
- default launch -> Nvidia, OK
- select use dedicated card -> Nvidia, OK, but this option shouldn’t be present.
Reported this one as bug #1876049

2 additional things:
- It would be great the default to be either Performance mode (real one) or On
Demand for supported card (nvidia-settings has the option only if this is
supported AFAIK, so it would be good to default dynamically to this one. Filed
as bug #1876051
- It would be great to have a way to pin an application with "Use dedicated
card". bug #1876050

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1742711] Re: MIR: vulkan(-loader)

2018-10-02 Thread Didier Roche
* "upstream split the source in four, old src:vulkan is going away and
src:vulkan-loader will be the one to be promoted once it's accepted from NEW."
-> it seems as of now (like 9 months later), the source is still named vulkan,
but I see vulkan-loader in NEW. The content of the package is exactly the same,
or should the MIR review be redone. What's the split cover exactly?

* we are bundling GLSLANG and SPIR-V in the source package. I think that
the MIR description (as you are aware of it, having written some wrapper
to get theme) should have mentioned it. Is it something you discussed
with the security team, as we already have glslang and spir-v as part of
the archive (even if I understand the benefits of vendoring, but here,
you aren't even sure to use the same vendored version than upstream as
they don't give you specific sha to build against)?

* debian/patches/*
-> would be good for them to follow DEP3, so that they all have descriptions
and rationale (some are just diff dumping a file with no explanations, or
changing the build system)

* debian/rules:
-DBUILD_TESTS=OFF -> any chance to enable the tests for this package?

* In the bug list, looking at NEW ones, there is only one crashers. The
other ones can be closed, do you mind doing a cleanswap on the NEW bugs?

* debian/copyright:
the external vendored dependencies aren't listed, like
external/glslang/OGLCompilersDLL/InitializeDll.cpp: BSD (3 clause)

Nitpick:
- you are using debian format source3, quilt. You thus don't need to add a
quilt build-dep.
- debian/rules is using --with quilt. Same, than above, shouldn't be needed for
source format 3, quilt.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1505695] Re: Plug in/out monitors doesn't trigger event

2015-10-14 Thread Didier Roche
After a bisect, the commit fixing it upstream is
78f7451886f0a33df717c57fc1a079ee7e6f221e. This one seems to depend at
least on some previous commits.

I'm available for any testing! (unplug/plug test should be done at least
30s after logging in into a vanilla session to have reliable results)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1484380] Re: Xorg regular crash on wily

2015-08-25 Thread Didier Roche
I was thinking the same, until yesterday evening, still got the same
crash while putting some youtube video fullscreen.

I'm wondering if that's not something to do with Chrome sending some GPU
data that the intel card doesn't like. Do you use chrome/chromium as
well?

2015-08-13 Thread Didier Roche

After upgrading to wily, I started to get regular random Xorg crash (and
so, session restarting and such). This can happen multiple times a day.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1441883] Re: 15.04 Vivid Vervet won't boot after uninstalling lightdm

2015-04-09 Thread Didier Roche
Done, now xdiagnose only triggers if an installed display manager is
configured as default but couldn't start. This should fix your boot
issue.

We won't fail graphical.target anymore if the only available dm was
uninstalled, however, I do recommend you set then your default target to
multi-user.target (case on a server system for instance).

The lightdm part would be interesting to ensure /e/X/d-d-m is empty, but
not required.

Hum, we have 0.32.4 in ubuntu, and you are proposing to sync to 0.32.6.
However, there is no NEWS file with infos, is it a bug fix release? If
so, please state it explicetly here (and turn the status back to new),
otherwise, please request a FFe.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1003950] Re: launcher does not show minimized update manager while clicked

2015-02-06 Thread Didier Roche
** Description changed:

+ Found an easy way to reproduce it during brussels sprint:
+ 1. start deja-dup or update-manager
+ 2. kill -9 compiz; metacity
+ 3. compiz --replace
+
+
+ ===
+
Update manager is showing up in the dock but I can click on the icon all
day and nothing happens. Similarly if I do Super-S or Super-W it doesn't
  show up anywhere.

Even if I alt-tab to the application nothing shows up. This happens only
when update manager runs on its own. If I kill it and then launch it
myself it comes to the foreground just fine.

I'm not 100% sure whether this is a unity, compiz, or update-manager bug
but so far my bet is on unity.

  =Original Report=
Bug #877444 is showing again in latest updates, please re-open it. This is
the exact same problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1204939] Re: Unity doesn't start on ATI test machine (Mir fails to respond to drm_auth_magic request)

2013-08-21 Thread Didier Roche
seems this issue is in the radeon driver.

We looked with Thomas for a couple of hours this particular issue and
came to the conclusion this one seems to appear only when switching from
traditional Xorg to a Mir environment back and force after having some
GPU load. The radeon driver seems to not really support that and
performances are dropping until we get to a really bad situation when
the machine is stuck.

Performance of glmark2 (under some loads are run in parallel) are getting down
quickly, to even 0 FPS in some case after switching (installing/removing
unity-system-compositor and restarting the container or lightdm):
Xorg (running glmark2 tests) - Mir (running glmark2 tests) - Xorg (running
glmark2 tests)

The driver is kept being loaded in the host.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1204939] Re: Unity doesn't start on ATI test machine (Mir fails to respond to drm_auth_magic request)

2013-08-21 Thread Didier Roche
Hence the email I'm about to send an emailtelling we are not blocking
Mir to release to distro.

Though, we are not 100% sure it's the real issue, just a high probability.
The ATI machine can't be used as of now for this testing, I keep it free (in
the same state, with the same package and no ugprade) for upstream to look at
it.

Question: Are there any processes which stay resident across iterations
switching between X and XMir? Like unity-system-compositor?

If so, can you please check the fd's and memory of such processes to see
if we're leaking something? If the problem is in user space then we have
much more chance of tracking it down in the short term...

Apart from the kernel and init, all the other processes are fresh.
You can have access to the machine, it's deprovisionned, to have a
closer look directly

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 842656] Re: Speedup startup time

2011-09-06 Thread Didier Roche
** Package changed: xorg (Ubuntu) = xdiagnose (Ubuntu)

** Description changed:

  This really on:
  - insert in nux upstream the possibility to create a cache file on disk if
test is successful (in /tmp which is erased at each reboot). If the cache file
is there at next detection, just return 0.
  - add a new Xsession.d file for nux to detect if the cache file is there for
dynamically session switch (before gnome-session is started)
- - change the unity hook apport to force the detection (no cache file used)
and show any cache file present
+ - change the xdiagnose apport hook to force the detection (no cache file
used) and show any cache file present
  - distro-patch the unity-greeter to run the nux tool async (so that it makes
the detection and drop the file) while the user is typing his password.

make sense, thanks!

Still on thing which not to be fixed:

apart from that, all is good, nice work ;)

acked. However, the network connect so the ssh promotion seems pretty bad at
