[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1873262] Re: [18.04] Need backport of i965-driver to support intel Gen9+

2020-04-16 Thread Doug McMahon
Unfortunately the HWE deal doesn't include libva or the vaapi driver.
Users will have to acquire themselves or from a ppa.
Why no idea, maybe saves 'resources'

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1851416] [NEW] Prime Profiles page could be better

2019-11-05 Thread Doug McMahon
Public bug reported:

There are 4 possibly problem points, placement, names, tooltips, help.
The 1st 3 are somewhat linked.

The new profile, NVIDIA On-Demand is currently placed between the 2 previous &
historical ones of NVIDIA.. & Intel..
The placement and name could lead one to believe that it's an app on demand or
as needed similar to how optimus works in windows. This is clearly not the case
& if picked produces a degraded experience for most users..
It should be the 3rd listed profile and if possible named more towards it's
actual use case.

There previously were 2 tooltips on hover, currently there still are just 2,
the one designed for Intel now exposes only when hovered over NVIDIA On-Demand,
hovering over Intel produces nothing
NVIDIA On-Demand should get it's own tooltip.

The Help button popup shows no info on what NVIDIA On-Demand is about or
for, considering the vast majority of users should not use that profile
it should be described, ect.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1719945] Re: Silently fails in Wayland session

2018-11-28 Thread Doug McMahon
Currently with hybrid systems a wayland session is presented when nvidia
drivers are in use though the user is logged into wayland using the Intel gpu.
So the fact that while in wayland the user can't use nvidia-settings > prime
profiles to *actually* switch back to the Intel gpu makes this bug more of an
issue.

previously with alternatives lightdm could affect switch on a og out/in,
however gdm3 needed a reboot.
The message was never changed to reflect this, now that apparently a reboot is
required no matter what dm it would be a good time to edit it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1756380] Re: vaapi VP9 hardware decoding not working anymore in bionic

2018-03-16 Thread Doug McMahon
18.04 should really get the new driver, whether it's easier to do before or
after release I don't know but it should be done.
For some reason Debian hasn't added it yet but that shouldn't stop Ubuntu from
doing so.
In addition to bug symptoms there are other advantages to going to 2.1. For
example there is a new interface for EGL interop, vaAcquireSurfaceHandle() in
libva 2.1 but you need the 2.1 driver to implement.
So while the 2.1.x driver will certainly be available via ppa's before too long
Ubuntu should plan on providing in 18.04 as best achieved.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1740183] [NEW] Consider removing libmir* from mesa

2017-12-26 Thread Doug McMahon

Linking to libmir* seems to be of no value & is a roadblock to some things, ex.
chromecast support in vlc.
Myself see no change when mesa is not patched for mir, if there is no value
anymore then please remove from build.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1725708] Re: Unable to use window menu in default GNOME applications (such as Gedit) - window minimizes on right click

2017-10-22 Thread Doug McMahon
Sorry, forgot that I don't use wayland in practice as it's not close to ready
but should when testing.
To note: this doesn't occur in a gnome session where the context menu is opened
inside the header bar so maybe add ubuntu-session.

Not sure that has anything to do with  this bug. When switching prime
profiles a restart is required (gdm3 only), that's a separate
longstanding unattended to bug.

Maybe something went south for you when trying to do the switch via a

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1721394] Re: Cannot open nvidia-settings on pc with a hybrid device (or use prime-select), missing python

2017-10-05 Thread Doug McMahon
Ok, fresh install today's image
1. The manifest say python-minimal is included but it's not installed,
$ apt-cache policy python-minimal
python-minimal:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 2.7.14-2ubuntu1
  Version table:
 2.7.14-2ubuntu1 500
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu artful/main amd64 Packages

2. Also on the manifest but not installed are python2.7
python2.7-minimal

3. Installing nvidia-384 goes fine. If opening nvidia-settings after
install but *before* rebooting it actually opens.

4. After rebooting it fails to open as noted in the bug report description.
5. Installing python-minimal or python fixes this or maybe they just need to
use python3

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1721394] Re: Cannot open nvidia-settings on pc with a hybrid device (or use prime-select), missing python

2017-10-05 Thread Doug McMahon
I wasn't really sure that it really needed the python package, it seems
toneed /usr/bin/python which should have been installed as it's provided by
the python-minimal package.
When nvidia-settings wouldn't start I just installed the python package
which brought in python-minimal, ect.

When I check the manifest for the current image python-minimal is listed.
Maybe I'll try a new install to make sure it is there after installing

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1719945] Re: Silently fails in Wayland session

2017-10-04 Thread Doug McMahon
While I can certainly confirm, what is the use case?
It would seem only useful when in a wayland session to switch from the intel
profile to the nvidia one before rebooting to an xorg session. I guess that
could save a little time/effort.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1698287] Re: VA-API fails to initialize in a Gnome Shell Wayland session

2017-08-08 Thread Doug McMahon
Regarding the mpv in artful:
You can currently get some vaapi support in wayland session, you'd need to use
hwdec=vaapi-copy
Not as effective as hwdec=vaapi but I don't think they'll be changing that
(commit noted), in near future.

vaapi in mpv in a wayland session was broken due to this commit

Testing here a reversion to allow, seems ok for at least me to date, as in

xorg-server-hwe-16.04 (2:1.19.3-1ubuntu1~16.04.1) is working fine here (along
with other related or required -proposed packages listed here.
Additionally with a modification to
/etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf to enable KMS PRIME
Synchronization is working on my hybrid (optimus) machines which has been
sorely needed for many, many users.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1671799] Re: FFe: xserver 1.19.x

2017-03-16 Thread Doug McMahon
Seems ok on both
Intel+NVIDIA hybrid Haswell + NVIDIA GK107M [GeForce GT 755M]
Intel+NVIDIA hybrid Ivybridge + NVIDIA GK107M [GeForce GT 660M]

Though both show an oddity in inxi reporting when on Intel with nvidia drivers
not installed -
Ex.,
intel xserver not installed, no nvidia drivers installed, with the apparent
Ubuntu default of DRI2 only

$ inxi -G

GLX Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel Haswell Mobile

The same is reported if intel xserver package is installed.

If nvidia drivers are installed -

Does indeed resolve issue when nvidia drivers are not installed.

(out of the scope of this FFe, many optimus users will be expecting
prime synchronization to work. At least here it doesn't when using
nvidia drivers via nvidia-prime.

Is this worth a new bug once 1.19.x releases to 17.04?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1671799] Re: FFe: xserver 1.19.x

2017-03-15 Thread Doug McMahon
Pretty simple here -
Will only successfully boot to greeter, ect. when nvidia drivers are installed.
If the drivers aren't installed then it either 'hangs' right after the fs check
on sandybridge or goes to low graphics pop up on haswell.

Once the nvidia drivers are installed then boot ups work fine whether
using either nvidia or intel. (as picked thru prime profiles or prime-
select.

If the nvidia drivers are removed then again boot up fails so something
is certainly amiss on your or Ubuntu's end.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1671799] Re: FFe: xserver 1.19.x

2017-03-11 Thread Doug McMahon
Same thing with a lenovo IdeaPad Y580 (sandybridge) except there it
doesn't even make it the low graphic pop up.

In both cases (sandybridge & previous laptop which is haswell) if I install the
nvidia drivers & reboot, it does boot up to an ubuntu session. From there
switching via prime profiles to intel gpu works & survives a reboot.
So the issue is on an upgrade of xserver while on the Intel iGPU, maybe how
alternatives are set?

Also to report that when the nvidia drivers are used via nvidia-prime
the current lack of any vsync is Not solved at all.. ( logs look good
for prime synchronization, just doesn't work.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1576685] [NEW] Disable touchpad while typing is not active nor can be enabled

2016-04-29 Thread Doug McMahon
Public bug reported:

It's no longer working by default nor can it be enabled thru syndaemon.
It does appear it can be enabled thru libinput (xserver-xorg-input-libinput),
(not default installed), however System Settings > Mouse & Touchpad does not
interface with xserver-xorg-input-libinput so installing it removes any
touchpad settings.

Is there anyway to restore this via syndaemon or allow
xserver-xorg-input-libinput & system settings ... to work together & present
touchpad settings to users?
This represents a regression to users that shouldn't be happening in an lts
release.

The 'working' method in libinput requires adding to
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/90-libinput.conf a line Option "DisableWhileTyping"
"true" ie. -

Section "InputClass"
Identifier "libinput touchpad catchall"
MatchIsTouchpad "on"
MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
Driver "libinput"
Option "DisableWhileTyping" "true"
EndSection

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1507676] Re: Nvidia-Prime not switching from intel to nvidia leading to a black screen

2016-04-01 Thread Doug McMahon
I would think this mis-reported issue will also be going on with 14.04.4 lts
which will not include the so-called ubuntu-drivers-common 'fix'
If interested on what really is occurring on optimus laptop & nvidia-prime see
here -
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-drivers-common/+bug/1501041

14.04.4 lts users can solve with a start up script(s) that put the
display to asleep & then wake up or they can adjust the greeter time to
sleep to 2 - 4 sec's. Once sleep > awakened on the greeter then the
logged in session will be fine.

Sorry to report that see same crash with the patch
Tried with both ubuntu & gnome sessions. (shouldn't matter & didn't but
recent mesa issue makes me test both just in case.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1507676] Re: Nvidia-Prime not switching from intel to nvidia leading to a black screen

2015-10-24 Thread Doug McMahon
Well then hopefully you can get it so this change to modesetting can be
reverted & one isn't forced to get screen to sleep then awake.
My whole point was that this report is claiming that the switch from Intel to
Nvidia fails which is not true is any respect.
It's purely a matter of no visible display until the display is put to sleep,
the awakened

If the bug reporter had walked away from machine for 300 sec.'s, then
pressed a key or moved a mouse they'd have gotten a visible working
session under nvidia.

examples, ect. where in prior reports -

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1507676] Re: Nvidia-Prime not switching from intel to nvidia leading to a black screen

2015-10-20 Thread Doug McMahon
A "regression in the intel driver" doesn't seem to explain why this was not an
issue in a gnome session, nor to the fact that -
xset dpms force off
xset dpms force on
returned display both in greeter & session
(and nvidia driver loaded & worked fine, with or without a visible display.

you 'fixed' the issue but maybe not for the correct reason

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1501041] Re: No visible display in ubuntu session when using nvidia drivers via nvidia-prime until screen goes to sleep, then waked up

2015-10-03 Thread Doug McMahon
Demonstration 2
If the autostart script was in place then disable

Alter the sleep time of unity-greeter from 300 to 6 (sec) in
/usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/com.canonical.unity-greeter.gschema.xml
(at bottom of file, assumes 6 sec is enough time to enter password, if not
increase 6 to something suitable

sudo -H gedit /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/com.canonical.unity-
greeter.gschema.xml

recompile schemas
sudo glib-compile-schemas /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas

Log out or restart, at black greeter screen wait at least 6 sec., then press a
key. (or wait for value set above in the .xml
The greeter screen will become visible - Quickly enter password & press enter
while the screen is still visible

Login session will have a visible display as expected

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1501041] Re: No visible display in ubuntu session when using nvidia drivers via nvidia-prime until screen goes to sleep, then waked up

2015-10-03 Thread Doug McMahon
** Description changed:

- Please note that this bug is being filed on a recent 15.10 Ubuntu image
- install but from a gnome session
+ ** this appears to be that the display is blanked/asleep at greeter & login.
+ Forcing or waiting for screen to blank/sleep then waking up restores display
+ See comments 8 & 9 for further info, demonstrations **
+
+
+ Please note that this bug is being filed on a recent 15.10 Ubuntu image
install but from a gnome session

  In a nutshell -
Once nividia drivers are installed & used from nvidia-prime there is no
longer a visible display in unity-greeter nor in an ubuntu session once logged
in. (a blind log in successfully loads an ubuntu session.
Everything in the ubuntu session works fine, there are no errors & all the
related logs look ok, there is just no visible display.

I can open apps, run commands, copy/create logs, play music, play
videos, just no display so has to be done blindly from keyboard.

On the other hand if I install gnome-shell & log in (blindly) to a gnome
session from greeter then all is well & I get a visible display.

The same behaviour is seen on an Xubuntu image install, once nvidia is
installed & switched to, no visible display. Again there installing &
logging into a gnome session works fine with visible display

nvidia driver version doesn't matter, exact same is seen with current
15.10 versions & the one I'm currently using (355) from drivers ppa.

** this appears to be that the display is blanked/asleep at greeter & login.
Forcing or waiting for screen to blank/sleep then waking up restores display
See comment 8 for further info **

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1501041] Re: No visible display in ubuntu session when using nvidia drivers via nvidia-prime until screen goes to sleep, then waked up

2015-10-01 Thread Doug McMahon
What happens in an ubuntu session is -
After logging in, no display. If the session is left inactive until display is
put to sleep, then awakining it thru keyboard or mouse brings back a visible
display. (default is 5 min. of inactivity

A simple startup script via startup applications demonstrates -
script in ~/bin

#!/bin/bash
xset dpms force off
xset dpms force on

~/.config/autostart/unblank.desktop

[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Exec=unblank1
Hidden=false
NoDisplay=false
X-GNOME-Autostart-enabled=true
Name=unblank
X-GNOME-Autostart-Delay=3

So with above in place after the blind login > 3 secs > visible display
is returned

It's been suggested that xorg.conf needs some serverflags, ie.

Section "ServerFlags"
Option "BlankTime" "0"
Option "OffTime" "0"
EndSection

Though not effective here as a standalone section & if there is an
xorg.conf solution then it needs to be patched into ubuntu-drivers-
common

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1501041] [NEW] No visible display in ubuntu session when using nvidia drivers via nvidia-prime

2015-09-29 Thread Doug McMahon
Public bug reported:

Please note that this bug is being filed on a recent 15.10 Ubuntu image
install but from a gnome session

In a nutshell -
Once nividia drivers are installed & used from nvidia-prime there is no longer
a visible display in unity-greeter nor in an ubuntu session once logged in. (a
blind log in successfully loads an ubuntu session.

Do a fresh install using the 14.04.1 image from Ubuntu old-releases.
If needing for some reason a newer mesa then use a ppa like xorg-edgers fresh X

Tested with -proposed enabled a number of apt-get sims, all looked good.
freeglut3-dev
libglew-dev
libsdl1.2-dev
libsdl2-dev

So will mark verification-done & dupe related bugs that will be fixed.

There still are a few cases open, one is obscure enough not to warrant a
look? (osmesa is not built in the hwe mesa), others may need to be
adjusted in the sources (like fglrx-updates, ect.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1357746] Re: Compiz fails to load with xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.99.914-1~exp1ubuntu1 on some Intel hardware

2014-09-06 Thread Doug McMahon
If I either blacklist nouveau or remove the xserver-xorg-video-nouveau package
then everything works as expected with the current xserver-xorg-video-intel
package.
This also *seems* to make restarts & shutdowns more reliable & makes going to a
tty not be liable to cause some sort of looping kernel panic (happens about 40%
of the time with nouveau package installed & not blacklisted

So choices here on Haswell Mobile -
Downgrade xserver-xorg-video-intel
Blacklist nouveau
Remove xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1357746] Re: Compiz fails to load with xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.99.914-1~exp1ubuntu1 on some Intel hardware

2014-08-27 Thread Doug McMahon
To clear up -
1. This bug was filed by running apport -cli from a tty, saving the report,
then filing that report from a recovery boot
(if there is a better way to use apport from a tty tell me.

2. The kernel version is *irrelevant*, compiz fails with any kernel inc.
going back to 3.13.x when xserver-xorg-video-intel is at
2:2.99.914-1~exp1ubuntu1

3. Compiz works fine with any kernel when xserver-xorg-video-intel is at
xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.99.910-0ubuntu1

4. This bug is only being filed on Intel Haswell Mobile, in my case on a
Lenovo 510p

5. If I install xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.99.914-1~exp1ubuntu1 on a
trusty install then there is no issue with compiz, so this only occurs
on utopic.

6. I don't believe this issues jerrylamos is seeing are the same, as
I've stated the kernel doesn't matter, this is not a 'sometimes' thing
& reverting the intel xserver package immediately & completely resolves
either thru a reboot or a stop/restart of lightdm/re-login

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1357746] Re: unity, (compiz) fails to load with xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.99.914-1~exp1ubuntu1

2014-08-16 Thread Doug McMahon
Can also be noted that a gnome-flashback > compiz session is likewise affected
though the symptoms are slightly different
(- nothing happens for a while, then booted back to greeter.
It also returns to expected with a downgraded xserver-xorg-video-intel package

If there is any specific means to present more useful debug info then
what is in this report will do so.

Seems to cause the inability to focus Desktop once any window is open.
Immediate affect is the inability to rename a file on the Desktop if a window

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1238410] Re: Inconsistent cursor visibility with cursor plugin enabled

2013-12-21 Thread Doug McMahon
Tried for a day plus on 2 laptops to reproduce this bug on fresh 13.10 release
installs & *can not* cause it to happen.
Then updated fully & still it does not occur.

After all that did go ahead & upgrade xserver-xorg-core/common from
-proposed, see no regressions from it.

So from here the upgrade would not be needed, not sure where that leaves
this as no other previously affected user has chimed in.

Tim - I was hoping someone who was using 13.10 & affected would test.
Seeing as that's not happening I'll put up a new 13.10 release install & -

See if the invisible cursor behavior happens.
If so, do any of the current non -proposed updates help.

If still occurring then will upgrade the -proposed & ck.
Should take a day to run thru & report back

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1200829] Re: Regression: Enabling typical bindings in "Desktop-based Viewport Switching" breaks scrollwheel scrolling in some windows with a usb mouse on a laptop

2013-12-13 Thread Doug McMahon
I may be mis-interpreting this, - if so sorry
While the xorg dev (Peter Hutterer) did comment, "both merged, thanks.",
(http://lists.x.org/archives/xorg-devel/2013-November/039228.html),don't
see that they were yet thru 1.14.5
In the upstream bug he seems to be asking for a test case of the type I can't
provide, if someone can may be worthwhile to do so.

It could be specific to laptops, here that's all I have so can't remark
on Desktops anymore.
Maybe I should tag some bugs in future with "laptop", if that's an
acceptable tag??

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1238410] Re: Inconsistent cursor visibility with cursor plugin enabled

2013-12-04 Thread Doug McMahon
Fix appears to be working fine here on 14.04, tested over the day thru numerous
restarts & log out/ins
(though 14.04 wasn't as susceptible as 13.10 for whatever reason

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1200829] Re: Regression: Enabling typical bindings in "Desktop-based Viewport Switching" breaks scrollwheel scrolling in some windows with a usb mouse on a laptop

2013-12-02 Thread Doug McMahon
Chris - I opened here newly described,
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/1257004
(new updated install, defaults only for compiz
added a couple of folders to Desktop *prior* to replacing
xserver-xorg-core/common

After upgrade/restart the existing folders open fine
Any newly created folder after upgrade causes crash using d. left click on
either mouse

Are there any ppa builds of a patched xserver I can try just to discount any
local error?
(I had to build locally as 2 attempts in a ppa always failed/hung on i386,
amd64 was fine

If a gdb is needed let me know, I'll give it a try..
