[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1778011] Re: SRU: PRIME Power Saving mode draws too much power

2018-09-29 Thread Fred Vkigg
Tested on Dell Precission 5520 with Ubuntu 18.04. This suffer from a
consistently high power usage in the Intel (Power saving) mode.

Proposed Packages install fine. After reboot switching Prime profile did
not seem applied with logout+login. Reboot was required. After a further
'apt upgrade' which pull in some new updated the Prime profile switch
work with just a logout+login. I assume I got a gdm3 update which was
required.

Looking at power graphs from the 'Power Statistics' tool i am getting
much better power usage (first time under 10W). Thanks for the work.
Will add a second comment if anything crops up after more usage.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1680974] Re: libegl1-mesa depends on libmirclient9

2017-04-10 Thread Fred
I don't know exactly how that calculation is done.
But it would be nice to be able to uninstall the Mir packages without it
removing Mesa.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1680974] Re: libegl1-mesa depends on libmirclient9

2017-04-10 Thread Fred
But Mir is not really used and never really was.
It was available as a preview.
It would make sense to relax the dependency from required to suggested, if not
drop it entirely as a dependency but still have it in the repository.

Yes, I read that it is not going away in the short term and it is
getting continued maintenance for IOT.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1680974] Re: libegl1-mesa depends on libmirclient9

2017-04-10 Thread Fred
This is no trolling. Mark Shuttleworth announced the abandonment of Mir and
Unity 8.
Is there any reason to still have a dependency?

Maybe it should be changed from required to suggested at least to soften
the dependency.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1679755] [NEW] [regression] xserver-xorg tries to install lots of video packages

2017-04-04 Thread Fred
Public bug reported:

I have 1.7.7+16ubuntu2 which works great for me.
Today was an updateto 1.7.7+16ubuntu3 by Timo Aaltonen.

Now the xserver-xorg package tries to pull in packages I didn't have
before.

xserver-xorg-video-all
xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu
xserver-xorg-video-ati
xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
xserver-xorg-video-radeon
xserver-xorg-video-vesa
xserver-xorg-video-vmware

I didn't have these on my system before, and I don't need any of these packages
on my system.
I am content with just having xserver-xorg-video-intel and don't need the rest.

This is a regression.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1471447] [NEW] [regression] Black mouse cursor in Tibia

2015-07-04 Thread Fred
Public bug reported:

I suspect that libdrm version 2.4.62-1 introduced a regression.
This issue was not present in 2.4.60-3.

When starting the game Tibia
(http://static.tibia.com/download/tibia1079.tgz, 45,1 MB)

The mouse pointer is now black.
Previously the mouse pointer was white as it should be and as it always have
been.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1433329] [NEW] Xorg without root rights

2015-03-17 Thread Fred
Public bug reported:

The X.Org Server is a large piece of software which currently runs as
root, making it a potential vector for attacks against the system. With
recent changes made to systemd-logind it is possible for the xserver to
let systemd-logind do device management for it, at which point the
xserver will no longer need root rights. Initially this will likely be
implemented as the xserver dropping root rights early on.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1417224] [NEW] Request updated version

2015-02-02 Thread Fred
Public bug reported:

I request the xwayland package to be updated due to a bug being present.
In #wayland I was told that this is a known bug that has been fixed in the
master branch.

== Reproduce ==
1. Press Ctrl+Alt+F1, login, start weston-launch.
2. Open weston-terminal and start any application that uses X so it runs
through Xwayland.
3. Press Ctrl+Alt+F7 to get back to X.Org Server.
4. Now press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to switch back to Weston.

== Expected ==
The application that you ran should still be there.

== What happened ==
All X11 applications ran on Weston through Xwayland have now crashed.

== Preconditions ==
You need to have the xwayland package installed.
You need to have configured Weston to load the xwayland module.
~/.config/weston.ini should contain:
[core]
modules=xwayland.so

== Error ==
XIO: fatal IO error 4 (Interrupted system call) on X server ":1"
after 1866 requests (1866 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

Packages still seem to list 1.0.5 as latest, but I guess that will change in
some hours?

Could this be pushed back to saucy?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1194675] Re: Freeze and lockups due to regression?

2013-07-01 Thread Fred
Frustrated with this, I switched to the proprietary drivers, but then I still
had the same problems.
Day later, I get garbled output even at the BIOS post screen before the drivers
are loaded.

So it is my graphics card that has died (Gainward brand FYI).

So I guess just my hardware, not the drivers fault.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1098064] Re: weston-desktop-shell crashed with SIGSEGV in ffi_call_unix64()

2013-03-12 Thread Fred
I am not familiar with applying patches and compiling stuff.

Also, while this bug does seem to occur quite frequently, I am not
exactly sure how to reproduce it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1106145] Re: Weston does not respect keyboard language setting

2013-03-11 Thread Fred
It is a request for keyboard layout autodetection on startup.

But now that you mention it, layout switching at runtime is needed too.

I don't know the exact details of how it would work.

But yeah, that sounds plausible.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1106145] Re: Weston does not respect keyboard language setting

2013-03-10 Thread Fred
Shouldn't it respect $LC_ALL or something?
Or use the keyboard language setting as console?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1106145] Re: Weston does not respect keyboard language setting

2013-01-27 Thread Fred
Keyboard on Weston works great when running under X, so I don't have any
input on gnome-control-center communication.

The thing that don't work is the keyboard layout when running Weston on
DRM/console.
Keyboard works perfect in console, it just doesn't work in Weston on console.

Maybe it should respect $LC_ALL or something.

2012-10-19 Thread Fred Palmer
After install of 12.10 and reboot, it does not work. Typical black screen.
Added nomodeset to grub parameter on boot line & it then does boot.
But for a new user that is a huge issue, that it just does not work.

No pop-up like previous versions on proprietary drivers are available.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1029221] Re: /usr/bin/weston does not have suid

2012-08-28 Thread Fred
This bug is no longer valid.
This was reported when weston 0.85 was in the repository.
Since then, weston in the repository have been updated to version 0.95 which
introduced weston-launch.
The update obsoletes this bug report.

So /usr/bin/weston no longer should be suid root. It should not.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 940640] [NEW] Mouse cursors should be vector graphics

2012-02-24 Thread Fred
Public bug reported:

In a modern system the mouse cursors should be some kind of scalable
vector graphics.

This will become increasingly important with upcoming new high resolution
screen panels that allows for higher pixel density.
Other systems are already moving in this direction with vector graphics for
mouse cursors.

Currently mouse cursors often come in several variants such as
Chameleon-White-Large, Chameleon-White-Regular, and Chameleon-White-Small.
Vector graphics could unify this to just one variant that is scalable to
arbitrary size and provide more flexibility.
This will also be more important as Ubuntu expands to other devices such as on
10-inch tablets and 52-inch TVs.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 751584] Re: package nvidia-173 173.14.28-0ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2011-09-06 Thread Fred Cone
Sorry, I only work with Linux via the GUI. I have no idea what you have
suggested for me to try. I have given up on ubuntu, but thank you for trying to
help. I will keep trying different Linux brands until I find one that works
without resorting to "command line" entries to "fix" it.
I started with CP/M, then DOS 3.0, etc. until I got Windows 3.0 (and every new
release thru Windows 7). I started with Linux around the time I was using
Windows 98 or SE, so now I just want one that works without having to "work" to
make it work.
Thanks again, but its just too much "work" to use ubuntu.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 733374] Re: X freeze, nvidia-current, Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick GeForce 9600GT

2011-06-26 Thread Fred Rocha
The issue is not keyboard related, I would risk saying. The freeze does
not happen exclusively on app switch, it's just an easy way of
triggering it. A much better guess is the graphics card.

Inspired by a lost post on Ubuntu freezes, I installed the latest Nvidia
drivers, 275.

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/oneiric/+source/nvidia-graphics-
drivers/275.09.07-0ubuntu2

So far, so good.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 751584] Re: package nvidia-173 173.14.28-0ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2011-05-20 Thread Fred Cone
I do not know how to check my system for a non-empty /var/log/apt/term.log,
whatever that means.
I just now figured out how to respond to your messages.
I also do not know how to boot into natty
and run the command:

  apport-collect

As I said, I am very experienced with DOS and Windows, but I am new to
Linux.

I was put into the reporting system automatically and just filled in the
blanks. I do not know how to reproduce the problem. I assume that I
would have to start from scratch and re-create the flash drive OS again.
At this point I do not remember how it was done.

I guess just forget it.
I am going to try openSuSE.

Shouldn't be it for example "waiting on 448398, at 448397"? Or what are
those numbers? Just an idea... Multithreading problem with 4 cores?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 766408] Re: [sandybridge-gt2] GPU lockup using xvmc (Render IPEHR: 0x02000004)

2011-04-27 Thread Fred Flinnstone
Hi,

I'm a bit afraid of exchanging the kernel, 'cause I'm not a pro... If
the system does not boot anymore, I can't get it fixed :( I know, it is
possible to install and boot different versions of the kernel, but I
forgot how to bind them into the grub-menu (I don't even have a boot
menu at all this time). If you can help me out, I would happily try
those new kernels. Many thanx in advance.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 766408] Re: [sandybridge-gt2] GPU lockup (Render IPEHR: 0x02000004)

2011-04-21 Thread Fred Flinnstone
It was a bit complicated, but finished somehow... No change in behavior. The
output of vdr-sxfe and syslog are attached.
I'm using the classic desktop, but i can't find anymore the setting to
activate/deactivate the effects???
I'm becoming sporadically following entries *without* running vdr-sxfe:

Apr 21 16:52:19 Supernova kernel: [ 670.372831] [drm:i915_hangcheck_ring_idle]
*ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... blt ring idle [waiting on 265235, at
265235], missed IRQ?
Apr 21 16:52:50 Supernova kernel: [ 701.102505] [drm:i915_hangcheck_ring_idle]
*ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... blt ring idle [waiting on 295130, at
295130], missed IRQ?

but apparently these errors doesn't have any effects and are not reproducible
(yet)... If you need further information, let me know. Thanks!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 766408] Re: [sandybridge-gt2] GPU lockup (Render IPEHR: 0x02000004)

2011-04-21 Thread Fred Flinnstone
Hi,
i am currently removing every PPA's from the system and see, if I can reproduce
it. It was a fresh install of natty on this system.
My hardware is a Gigabyte GA-H67A-UD3H-B3 with i5 2500K CPU 8 GB RAM (512
assigned to on-board graphics) 2TB HDD.
Have to compile some packages from sources, since the vdr-plugins are
incompatible with the VDR version in natty (bug #762558).
I need an hour, I'll be back ;)

I am running ubuntu linux 10.10 32-bit for the first time on an Intel i7 PC
from a USB drive built with a "persistant" capability by a PendriveLinux.com
Universal USB Installer to "Put Ubuntu on Flash Drive using Windows".
I have no idea what:

I am sorry, but I do not know enough to tell if the is a new bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 618076] Re: GPU crash while playing doom 3

2011-01-09 Thread Fred Odendaal
Upgraded OS to Ubuntu 10.10 - Kernel 2.6.35-24-generic (64 bit). Crash
no longer occurs!

However it no longer picks up the 32bit libraries by default. I had to
add this line to the beginning of the doom3 script to get it to work:

export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib32:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:.

I think this bug can be closed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 618076] Re: GPU crash while playing doom 3

2010-08-20 Thread Fred Odendaal
No graphics card. GPU is onboard Intel I3 530 Core processor.

Crash can be avoided by turning off 3D acceleration in the xorg.conf file by
putting the following line in the Device section:
Option "DRI""False"

However, this makes the game so slow it's almost unplayable.
