I have the same problem 18.04.2 LTS, 4.15.0-46-generic #49 With something perhaps useful : I have grub for multi-boot, and only this one ubuntu OS installed -When the computer was on, with ubuntu or another system, a system restart leads me to grub, that leads me to ubuntu, and it is stuck. -At this point a command like ctrl+alt+del restarts the system, takes me back to grub, that leads to ubuntu, and it keeps hanging. When i perform a hard reset while it's stuck (computer button), grub leads me to ubuntu that boots instantaneously, no hanging. Repeated several times. So for the moment, hard reset is my workaround. I don't know how apport works so sorry not to feed the issue with one. OK, on Lucid, I just enabled the proposed updates in Synaptic. I then selected to completely remove fglrx. Applied updates, which removed it. I then selected to install it. It worked after installation was complete and a re-boot. This was my BRAND NEW System76 Serval Professional that I just received from UPS today. I got the broken update after booting it up and applying updates that were ready. WOW! What a kick in the teeth! Thanks to all those, developers and everyone else, who found this problem so quickly and got the fix out there for people like me. To the person who pushed the Kernel update with the symbol changed to GPL-Only: I hope you get crabs! Just kidding. I actually understand the whole GPL-Only thing and support it! How can I best/safely test this? Add the PPA to my software repos then use the Hardware Drivers utility to select it? Should that work OK? I tried Zero's solution of rolling back to the 173 version of the NVidia Driver using the Hardware Drivers configurator. This fixed my problem. The symptoms I was having as follows: Configuration/Environment: 1. Compiz 2. Emeral Theme Decorator 3. Cube Rotation, Reflection, and many other Effects enabled Symptom: Any time I Maximized a window the display completely froze. I was unable to switch terminals and not even Ctrl-Alt-Backspace worked (I had re-enabled Ctrl-Alt-Backspace using the 'dontzap' command). The only way to make anything at all happen was to power-off the machine and perform and hard re-boot. Of course, re-booting like this tended to corrupt the Tracker indexes. What a mess! Anyway, rolling back to version 173 of the Nvida driver so far has fixed the problem. Yay! Thanks Zero! THIS IS A HORRIBLE BUG! THIS IS THE LAST NVIDIA VIDEO CARD MACHINE I WILL EVER PURCHASE! rant PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, INTEL/AMD PRODUCE GOOD FLOSS DRIVERS ASAP! I'M TIRED OF THIS KIND OF THING BECAUSE OF CLOSED-SOURCE CRAPPY DRIVERS! Nvidia, SERIOUSLY, consider your customers, can't things be better than this?
