Thanks for confirming that it's not a driver problem -- I took the liberty to mark the nvidia-bug as invalid. I hit those bug as well (Core i7, SSD, P55, 8800GTX) -- but I don't think it's related to the nVidia proprietary drivers: Even without those drivers, on first booting after installation, I get grey GNOME default panels.
