Retract comment #5. I created a new user and that user does not have the same reproducible problem. There must be something corrupted in a config file somewhere. Since the updates during the second week of August I am experiencing the same problem with a Dell XPS M1330 with an nvidia graphics card. I removed the nvidia proprietary drivers and experience the same problem (but the xorg.conf file might not have been consistent with this change...)
