Chase,

Just a suggestion: If this is the future, it might be best to set the
two finger tap to middle click by default, at least on systems with
physical buttons. The rationale on this is that right-clicks are easy to
do through other mechanisms (right button or menu key), while middle-
clicks are more difficult to synthesize on most PC hardware.

Shane: I wasn't being sarcastic, this issue has also prompted me to
switch to KDE.

I don't think using Gnome shell or Unity 2D work around this issue,
since they both still use Gnome Settings Daemon.

Note that there is a workaround for Oneric: Use KDE. (That's what I've
done)

I should elaborate on what I'm seeing:
1 finger tap -> left click
2 finger tap -> right click
3 finger tap -> some sort of window manager operation (using scroll gestures 
here moves the active window)

Middle click is still available by pressing both buttons simultaneously,
but this is not available on clickpads, and is more difficult than a
two- or three-finger gesture.

Also seeing this on 11.10 beta. Note that there has been a lot of
