[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1371347] [NEW] nouveau E[Xorg[966]] failed to idle channel 0xcccc0001
Public bug reported: After the fresh install, I properly saw the boot progress with the plymouth Xubuntu theme up to a step where the screen has no more the progress image but a odd screen content which doesn't represent anything (from my knowledges). Next, I could get a virtual console (tty1) after many attempts of key strokes (CTRL-ALT-F1). Each ~10-30 seconds I get a console message in this screen like : nouveau E[Xorg[966]] failed to idle channel 0x0001 [Xorg[966]] I achieved to log in and execute 'sudo initctl stop lightdm'. The 'ps axf' command showed that X was still running. I first tried the command sudo kill 966 with no success. Then I executed the command sudo kill -KILL 966. Finally, I decided to install the proprietary driver with the command sudo apt-get install nvidia-current. I reboot and the problem disappeared. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 761065] Re: [Sandybridge] Spurious *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... blt ring idle messages in dmesg when using compiz
On my setup (Dell 6420 with integrated HD3000; shows as 8086:0126 (rev 09) in lspci; running Debian 2.6.38-2), the bug appears only after a while (so it's hard to reproduce). I tried your new kernel anyway. I got the error just once, after the boot: [ 73.270170] [drm:i915_hangcheck_ring_idle] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... blt ring idle [waiting on 11744, at 11744], missed IRQ? I will stick with this kernel until the bug happens again (or not ;-)) Just tried neverball for a couple of minutes, it didn't trigger the bug. Note: I don't know if it's relevant, but since I installed this kernel, opening the lid of the laptop will turn the screen to black. The screen remains OK when I close the lid, but when I re-open it, it goes black. It's not off (I still see the backlight), just black. It is then stuck in that state: switching back to textmode won't help. However, if I suspend to RAM and resume, the screen will work again. Before using this kernel, this bug occured exactly 50% of the time (i.e., I could close+open once, and the 2nd time would trigger the bug). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/761065 Title: [Sandybridge] Spurious *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... blt ring idle messages in dmesg when using compiz ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

The X crash risks losing user data from unsaved documents in applications. Fix: === This is caused by a typo in commit 80b5d3a3. A fix has been pulled to the server-1.9 stable branch in commit 3effb61e ( http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/commit/?id=78f94f19aab66a1e5331df0ce29f36e310b4195d). Users of the binary nVidia driver who have multiple monitors and select “Separate X screen” rather than “Twinview” in nvidia-settings will be using a Xinerama multi-head configuration.
