[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 607926] [NEW] video players (totem, vlc) crash during video mode change when using Xv and compiz

2010-07-20 Thread Jeff Epstein
Public bug reported:

If video is playing during a video mode change, the player application
will crash, under certain conditions.

To reproduce: Using Lucid, nvidia drivers 195, and compiz. Play any
video in any video player, such as totem or compiz. While the video is
playing, change video mode, either via gnome-display-properties, or
xrandr (in some cases it may be necessary to change video mode twice).
The video player will crash.

What I expect to happen: The video player doesn't crash.

Notes: This only happens if compiz is in use; the bug is not present
with metacity. It only happens if Xv is used for video; if you turn off
Xv via gstreamer-properties, totem will not crash during mode switch
(although vlc still will; presumably, it ignores that particular
setting). This didn't happen under Jaunty with a similar configuration,
and so is a regression. So this looks like some ugly interaction between
Xv, compiz, and nvidia.

Additional note: The player will also crash if it is active during a
suspend-to-RAM/resume operation, presumably because resume involves a
video mode change. In that case, however, there is an additional
problem, which is that after the resume (only if a video player was
running at the time of suspend!), Xorg consumes huge amounts of RAM and
CPU time, and system responsiveness is seriously degraded, requiring a
complete system restart (restarting Xorg does not suffice). I don't know
if this is a different symptom of the same bug or a separate bug.

The error message produced by totem when it crashes is:

The program 'totem' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 507 error_code 11 request_code 133 minor_code 19)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

I will be happy to provide more detailed information of any sort.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 554980] Re: two finger scroll/multitouch not working on lenovo thinkpad w510 having SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad..

2010-07-14 Thread Jeff Epstein
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 308191 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/308191

Everyone wants Ubuntu to be as good as it can be. Idealistic notions
aside, the fact is that there is a limited amount of manpower to attend
to these bugs. So, in the interest of expediting a fix that will be
adequate to the largest number of users, I'll compare these bugs:

bug 554980 can be fixed with a simple patch to gnome-mouse-properties.
In fact, it was working in Jaunty, and this represents a regression.
Multitouch emulation is in the system, it works, and it simply needs a
GUI to activate it. This could even be done in lucid-updates.

bug 308191 touches a lot of packages and much of the required code isn't
deployed. There is no way this can be done in Lucid and probably not
even in Maverick. Even with a far-off, allegedly superior solution that
would resolve bug 308191, the user experience would be exactly the same
as if we fixed bug 554980. Genuine multitouch and multitouch emulation,
at this point, are indistinguishable to an end user. And while expert
bug fixers are spending time on a more difficult solution, they are
neglecting other, far more serious, bugs.

So, we have to choose: if we value a user experience, which enables two-
fingered scrolling in the near future, let's fix this bug. If we want to
spend years in development creating the ultimate solution, while users
get a sub-par operating system, then let's ignore this bug and focus on
308191.

In any case, this is not at all my decision to make. I'm just a user to
would like to have a solution that works as soon as possible. If the
Ubuntu community decides otherwise, so be it.

That's my last word on the subject.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 588317] Re: xorg hogs too much memory after resuming from lock screen causing the desktop to be unresponsive

2010-07-14 Thread Jeff Epstein
Does this bug happen after locking the screen, or only after resume from
suspend?

I have similar performance issues after resume from suspend, in which
Xorg always uses 10-15% of CPU (on a quadcore) and uses more and more
memory and the performance of the system as a whole is degraded,
resulting in a jerky mouse and slow loading of programs. I didn't have
tihs problem under Jaunty. I can include logs, if helpful. This could be
an nvidia issue, or an Xorg issue, but it doesn't happen on my system
with Intel graphics.

Do we have the same bug?

I agree that a more thorough solution is better, and it's not for me to

who just want to be able to scroll with two fingers, there is a solution
today that works, whereas a comprehensive multitouch solution, touching

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 554980] Re: two finger scroll/multitouch not working on lenovo thinkpad w510 having SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad..

2010-07-12 Thread Jeff Epstein
Gursimran:

1. If scroll is invoked with one finger, increase the value of
EmulateTwoFingerMinW. Yours is 3, which is very small. A value of 5
works well for me, but your number may vary, depending on your touchpad
and your fingers.

2. It's not a fix, it's a workaround. A fix would involve a patch to
gnome-mouse-properties.

3. This bug is not about multitouch, but about two-finger scroll. Since
my workaround allows two-finger scroll, I think it's a valid workaround.
There is another bug for multitouch. If a person wants two-finger
scroll, what difference does it make if he gets it through multitouch
emulation or through real multitouch? I don't understand your complaint.

4. Pinch/zoom via multitouch are features that depend on application
support as well, and to the best of my knowledge no applications support
for Ubuntu support these gestures, so this is more than a driver issue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 554980] Re: two finger scroll/multitouch not working on lenovo thinkpad w510 having SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad..

2010-07-11 Thread Jeff Epstein
These instructions assume that you are using up-to-date Lucid with a
Synaptic touch pad:

1. First make sure that you have a Synaptics touch pad. Execute the
command:

xinput list|grep Synaptics

You should see this (or something similar):

⎜SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad id=11 [slave pointer
(2)]

2. Then execute the following command (all on one line) to temporarily
enable two-finger scrolling via multitouch emulation:

synclient TapButton2=3 HorizTwoFingerScroll=1 VertTwoFingerScroll=1
EmulateTwoFingerMinZ=29 EmulateTwoFingerMinW=5 JumpyCursorThreshold=200

If the above command produces an error, you don't have a compatible
touchpad. If it doesn't produce an error, but two-finger scroll doesn't
work either, try adjusting the value of EmulateTwoFingerMinW and
EmulateTwoFingerMinZ in the above command and executing it again. A
smaller value in EmulateTwoFingerMinW will accept a narrower touch to
activate scrolling.

3. To make changes permanent, follow the instructions in the attached
file.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 462166] Re: two-finger scrolling doesn't work

2010-07-06 Thread Jeff Epstein
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 308191 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/308191

I disagree that this is a duplicate.

This bug deals with two-finger scrolling, which is easy to fix with a
workaround. The workaround works for me and many other people, on any
synaptics touchpad.

Bug 308191 is different; it is related to support of multitouch, a
particular hardware feature that is not present in all touchpads. That
bug is essentially asking for support for additional hardware, which is
much more complicated than just turning on two-finger scrolling support,
which is already present in the driver.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 599452] Re: [pineviewgm] X crash after restore from hibernate

2010-07-06 Thread Jeff Epstein
The kernel 2.6.32-23-generic was recently (a few days ago) pushed on
Lucid on since then I haven't had any crashes, despite my attempts to
reproduce it. The problem seems to be solved with that kernel release,
although it would be nice if someone else could verify it.

I'd be happy to try out Maverick and see if it suffers from a similar
problem. Unfortunately, it won't be so easy, since you can't hibernate
from a LiveCD boot. Is it worthwhile to see if Maverick runs in
low-graphics mode even without hibernating? Also, why does PGTBL_ER:
0x03 worry you? Should I do more testing in relation to that?

On 7/6/10, Geir Ove Myhr gom...@gmail.com wrote:
It seems that you tested the mainline build of 2.6.35-rc1, while 2.6.35-rc3
was the newest at that point (now it's -rc4). That could be the source of
the other problems. There was a discussion on the intel-gfx mailing list
about hibernation causing memory corruption on intel hardware last week. It
 resulted in this commit:
 http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commit;h=985b823b919273fe1327d56d2196b4f92e5d0fae

This is now included in 2.6.35-rc4 (and should also make its way to a
Lucid update at some point). Could you test the mainline build of
 2.6.35-rc4 with and/or without xorg-edgers?

It is possible that something unrelated caused the low-graphics mode to
be triggered (since as far as I understand it didn't take a hibernate
cycle to trigger it). The intel_error_decode output you uploaded
contains PGTBL_ER: 0x03 which is something I would worry about in a more
stable configuration. I would be interested to know if this happens in
Maverick as well. Could you try a LiveCD/USB on your computer and see if
 it goes into low-graphics mode?

 Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Lucid crashes after resume from hibernate. The crash is not immediate, but
usually occurs within five minutes after resume, usually when starting a
program, but I can't identify the specific behavior that directly triggers
the crash (besides hibernation itself). The crash is 100% reproducible. The
system is completely stable if I never hibernate. Resume from suspend to RAM
also works perfectly, and the system remains stable: it is only suspend to
 disk that triggers the crash.

I'm using an HP Mini 210, which has Intel N10 graphics, using the i915
 driver.

There are other, similar bugs involving Intel graphics on Lucid, such as bug
528467 and bug 554569, but these bugs don't specifically deal with a crash
after hibernate, so I am filing a new bug report. This may be related to the
known X crashes related to KMS documented here:
 https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8xxFreezes As suggested at that
address, I enabled and disabled KMS. The crash happens at the same time in
either case, but the symptoms are slightly different: with KMS enabled, the
crash results in the X is running in low graphics mode dialog box; I can
easily access virtual terminals, and although X will not start, the computer
remains functional. With KMS disabled, the crash results in a loop where the
screen is turned on and off, virtual terminals are not accessible, and
 nothing is displayed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 599452] Re: [pineviewgm] X crash after restore from hibernate

2010-07-02 Thread Jeff Epstein
Tried new kernel and xorg as requested. Some unusual new startup
messages, such as no compatible bridge window for [mem
0x-0x pref] and some garbage at the top of the screen
during mode switching. X starts up okay, but in low-graphics mode. Since
then I haven't been able to produce the crash, but of course I also
don't have hardware acceleration or compiz. Although there's no crash,
I'm including the information you've requested anyway. Please let me
know if there's anything else I can do to help.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 599452] [NEW] X crash after restore from hibernate with Intel graphics

2010-06-28 Thread Jeff Epstein
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Lucid crashes after resume from hibernate. The crash is not immediate,
but usually occurs within five minutes after resume, usually when
starting a program, but I can't identify the specific behavior that
directly triggers the crash (besides hibernation itself). The crash is
100% reproducible. The system is completely stable if I never hibernate.
Resume from suspend to RAM also works perfectly, and the system remains
stable: it is only suspend to disk that triggers the crash.

I'm using an HP Mini 210, which has Intel N10 graphics, using the i915
driver.

There are other, similar bugs involving Intel graphics on Lucid, such as
bug 528467 and bug 554569, but these bugs don't specifically deal with a
crash after hibernate, so I am filing a new bug report. This may be
related to the known X crashes related to KMS documented here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8xxFreezes As suggested at that
address, I enabled and disabled KMS. The crash happens at the same time
in either case, but the symptoms are slightly different: with KMS
enabled, the crash results in the X is running in low graphics mode
dialog box; I can easily access virtual terminals, and although X will
not start, the computer remains functional. With KMS disabled, the crash
results in a loop where the screen is turned on and off, virtual
terminals are not accessible, and nothing is displayed.

Using xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.9.1-3ubuntu5

Please let me know if there's any additional information I can provide.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 462166] Re: two-finger scrolling doesn't work

2010-06-27 Thread Jeff Epstein
Oddly enough, two-fingered scrolling can be enabled in Gnome from the
command line, but not from the GUI. Run the following command:

gconftool-2 --set /desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/scroll_method 2
--type int

This will enable two-fingered scrolling. The appropriate radio button
will be shown selected in gnome-mouse-properties, but it will still be
disabled.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 590460] Re: multi-touch and two finger scrolling don't work on eeepc 1005pe

2010-06-27 Thread Jeff Epstein
@Henrqiue: Can you be more specific than saying it doesn't work? For
example, does the gnome-mouse-properties GUI show that two-fingered
scrolling has been selected, or not?

Also, please try saving the attached file as 11-touchpad.conf into your
/usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d/ directory, in addition to running the command
from the other bug, and then rebooting. Now does it work? Can you
provide us with your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file after making these
changes? Also, please provide the output of the synclient -l command
after making these changes. Thanks.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 516329] Re: TouchPad buttons don't work on HP Mini 210 (1030NR)

2010-04-24 Thread Jeff Epstein
This bug also applies to the HP Mini 210-1010NR model.

Just to recap my own experience:

Out of the box, the actual buttons (which are physically part of the
pad area) don't work. To effectuate a click, one has to tap on the pad.
Right click is very hard, as one has to tap on the lower right corner of
the pad; it usually takes me a few tries. Two-fingered scrolling does
not work, but edge scrolling does.

This is my workaround: I discovered that by applying the following
settings via synclient, I can achieve two-fingered scrolling, and a two-
fingered tap will be interpreted as a right-click. (However, two-
fingered scrolling is still a disabled option in gnome-mouse-mouse-
properties.) This isn't a fix to this bug, but it might help people who
are having trouble.

This command will do it:

synclient TapButton2=3 HorizTwoFingerScroll=1 VertTwoFingerScroll=1
EmulateTwoFingerMinZ=29 EmulateTwoFingerMinW=5

By the way, what is the correct way to apply these settings
automatically at start up? Does one have to edit
/usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d/* or is there a per-user way of applying these
settings other than invoking synclient in .xinitrc? Any help would be
appreciated.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 558847] [NEW] Contact with more than one finger on touchpad produces crazy frenetic cursor

2010-04-08 Thread Jeff Epstein
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

I've just installed Lucid Beta 2 on an HP Mini 1010nr. There is some
unusual behavior involving the Synaptics touchpad. If the user contacts
the touchpad with more than one finger at a time, the cursor will go
crazy and bounce around the screen in an uncontrolled way. If you were
dragging an icon at the time, it will probably end up somewhere random.

This is different from the behavior under Karmic running on the same
machine. Under Karmic, if the user accidentally uses more than one
finger, the first finger is ignored. This behavior is pretty standard
for non-multitouch touchpads.

I consider this an important regression. Accidental touches with another
finger are pretty common when using a touchpad, and this bug means that
such touches produces often unpredictable results. The wild dancing of
the cursor is also ugly and obviously wrong to any user, so it produces
a bad impression.

Some other notes that may be important:
I believe that the touchpad on this system is actually multitouch-capable, even
though Ubuntu treats it as singletouch-only. When running Windows 7 on the same
machine, two-fingered scrolling is supported, but not under Ubuntu.

Another important difference between Lucid's and Karmic's handling of
the touchpad has to do with a feature that I hadn't seen before. My
touchpad has a small red light in the upper left. When running under
Windows with the OEM's drivers, tapping that area of the touchpad will
temporarily disable the touchpad, and the light will illuminate. Tapping
that area again will re-enable the touchpad. This feature obviously
doesn't work under Ubuntu. Under Karmic, the light that indicates a
disabled touchpad was always off. Under Lucid, however, the light is
always on, even though the touchpad is enabled (and producing the above-
mentioned crazy jumping of the cursor). This suggests to me that there
is some confusion with the driver.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 558847] Re: Contact with more than one finger on touchpad produces crazy frenetic cursor

2010-04-08 Thread Jeff Epstein
Marking as invalid. Please ignore; this turned out to be interference
from Windows.

More specifically: the problem was caused by the following sequence of
events: booting into Windows, disabling the touchpad via the above-
described method, and rebooting the system into Ubuntu.

The problem can be fixed by powering down the system.

So, this is probably not a bug, but is very strange behavior
nonetheless.
