[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1196712] [NEW] nvidia-310-updates 310.44-0ubuntu2: nvidia-310-updates kernel module failed to build
Public bug reported: I was humming along and appeared to be fine, then the system froze completely and forced me to power-cycle to get it to come back to life. On doing so, booting into the current 3.10 (3.10.0-1.8) kernel for Saucy, there was no nvidia driver, and an error in the xorg logs saying that the driver failed to load. I was left with X in a failsafe mode, and no desktop, only a black screen and an X cursor... no way to do anything useful at all. To get to a working system, I had boot into the older 3.9.0-7.15 which did have a working, compiled nvidia driver. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 990575] Re: Entire desktop becomes unresponsive after suspend/resume
Noticed this on multiple Lenovo systems and some Dells too. Steps to recreate: Boot precise. Do some work for a while (maybe 15 minutes maybe longer) close the lid open the lid when system resumes, the desktop may be frozen... This doesn't happen every time I close the lid, but seems to occur after the systems been running and working for a while. The desktop appears frozen. There is still mouse pointer movement, but you'll note that the cursor doesn't change as it moves across various types of windows, clicks do nothing to icons, buttons, or whatever. Right click produces no context menus, no tooltips appear on launcher icons. ** Summary changed: - [Lenovo W510] Entire desktop becomes unresponsive after suspend/resume + Entire desktop becomes unresponsive after suspend/resume -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-nouveau in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/990575 Title: Entire desktop becomes unresponsive after suspend/resume To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-nouveau/+bug/990575/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Also, it's not nVidia dependent as first thought, as this occurs on systems without nVidia cards installed. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 992233] [NEW] [Lenovo E525] Switching video modes causes severe corruption / can't display larger modes
Public bug reported: To reproduce, install 12.04 LTS onto a Lenovo E525 with the ATI video card. Run the script /usr/share/checkbox/scripts/xrandr_cycle After the first few larger modes, video will become horribly corrupted and may not recover once the script tries to restore the original mode. Essentially, the script determines what modes are availabe then switches to those modes to verify they work. Once the resolution gets small enough (less pixels), I noted severe screen corruption. See the attached video. the fun really stars around the 30 second mark. On that video, the screen did not recover afterwards. I had to powercycle the machine to get the screen back to a usable state. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 990575] [NEW] [Lenovo W510] Entire desktop becomes unresponsive after suspend/resume
Public bug reported: Doing certification testing on the Lenovo W510. During testing, I closed the lid and re-opened. The system suspended. I pressed the power button to resume and once it was awake again, the desktop was present but not usable. I can move the pointer around freely, but the pointer never changes from the Text pointer to the arrow as it moves over various areas of hte desktop. Clicks to windows or launcher icons or panel icons do not produce any results. Right clicks do not produce any context menus. There is no way out of this. Because CTRL-ALT-BKSP was decided to be such a bad thing, a user in this position has only two options. Reboot, or drop to a console and kill X. I reset X by dropping to a console and sending it a SIGHUP. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 959747] [NEW] X displays a lot of left-over video garbage when logging in
Public bug reported: This is the first time I've used the Nouveau driver as this is really the first time I've felt it good enough to use full time (I haven't tried it since 10.04). But now that I've done a brand new install of Precise on my Alienware M15x with the nVidia GT240m GPU, I'm running nouveau. It's not a major issue, but I do see a lot of garbage, presumably left over in video ram when I log in to Ubuntu. This goes away after several seconds (somewhere between 5 and 10 seconds) but A: it looks very concerning when it happens, and B: if you look close enough, it's possible that someone logging into the system could catch snippets of private information as it's dumped to the screen between hitting enter on lightdm (after entering the password) and the desktop fully loading. So there's a very slight security/privacy concern there. I am not sure what causes this, I'm thinking it's cached or left over vram data perhaps, but the person logging in will get to see bits and pieces of previous desktop sessions, including text, pictures, etc. So on the one hand, it looks scary, and may be daunting and provide bad associations to new users with similar hardware, and on the other hand, as mentioned above, there is a slight concern for privacy and security if someone else is logging onto the machine and getting to see bits of the last person's desktop. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 959747] Re: X displays a lot of left-over video garbage when logging in
I shot this video with my iPhone just to show you what actually appears on screen between LightDM and the desktop. I don't recall noticing this with the nVidia proprietary drivers, to be honest, at least not to this degree. It's well possible that I just trained myself to ignore it over the years with nVidia_current, but I don't recall ever seeing THIS much detail from a previous session when the garbage appears on screen. ** Attachment added: IMG_1478.MOV https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-nouveau/+bug/959747/+attachment/2900200/+files/IMG_1478.MOV -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-nouveau in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/959747 Title: X displays a lot of left-over video garbage when logging in To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-nouveau/+bug/959747/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 863459] Re: Really bad artifacting on Lenovo S10 after upgrade to Oneiric
Yikes... somehow I completely overlooked updating this. Anyway, at some point (not sure when) and update did indeed resolve this issue. Unity seems happy, though the whole system seems a little sluggish (but that's to be expected on a first gen Atom with only 1.5GB RAM shared between video and CPU). In any case, an update after release did indeed resolve the artifacting problems I was encountering. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 877695] Re: Desktop does not revert when unplugging external VGA with nouveau
** Summary changed: - [Latitude E6510] Desktop does not revert when unplugging external VGA with nouveau + Desktop does not revert when unplugging external VGA with nouveau ** Description changed: - Testing the E6510 with Oneiric. I have discovered that neither external - VGA nor Display port work with the nvidia driver from nvidia_current. I - have also discovered that DisplayPort does not work with nouveau. - However, External VGA does seem to work with nouveau. BUT the problem - arises when you unplug the external display. + Testing the E6510 (7383) with Oneiric. I have discovered that neither + external VGA nor Display port work with the nvidia driver from + nvidia_current. I have also discovered that DisplayPort does not work + with nouveau. However, External VGA does seem to work with nouveau. + BUT the problem arises when you unplug the external display. I've managed to recreate this every time by doing the following: 1: Verify you're running nouveau 2: plug in a monitor via external VGA on the 6510. 3: Verify desktop has been extended. I do this simply with CTRL+ALT+Arrow to open the switcher. When configured for dual desktops, you'll see each quadrant split into two with a blue bar under the Primary desktop. 4: Unplug the monitor 5: wait a few seconds and then do CTRL+ALT+Arrow to open the switcher and notice that the desktops are STILL split into two as though the monitor was connected. 6: open something that creates secondary popups. Typing ubuntu-bug xorg in a terminal window does great. You'll notice that while the main apport window may or may not appear on the visible screen, if you open the switcher again, you'll notice that popups are appearing on the extended display, and without the external monitor, there's no way to get to them. You can further confirm this by plugging the monitor back in and you'll see the popup once that monitor comes online. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 877686] [NEW] [Latitude E6510] External DisplayPort does not work with Nouveau driver
Public bug reported: Testing Oneiric on the E6510. During testing, attempted to connect a monitor using the system's external DisplayPort video port. The system was running nouveau. This port is completely inoperative with nouveau driver. (it's also inop with nvidia_current). The logs may indicate that the system is using nvidia rather than nouveau, that is because I tested this with nouveau, then installed nvidia_current to verify the behaviour and that's what's currently installed and running. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 877695] [NEW] [Latitude E6510] Desktop does not revert when unplugging external VGA with nouveau
Public bug reported: Testing the E6510 with Oneiric. I have discovered that neither external VGA nor Display port work with the nvidia driver from nvidia_current. I have also discovered that DisplayPort does not work with nouveau. However, External VGA does seem to work with nouveau. BUT the problem arises when you unplug the external display. This is a blocker as well because once this happens, the only way to restore usablility is to reboot. I tried unity --reset and tried simply logging out and back in to restart X. Both cases resulted in the system freezing, necessitating a reboot anyway. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 877719] [NEW] [Latitude E6510] xset dpms off causes X to freeze with nvidia_current
Public bug reported: Running the nvidia driver on the e6510 (7383) and during testing, there's a test for powersaving features that blanks the screen using 'xset dpms force off'. On every other system so far this just causes the screen to blank and quickly return using a keypress, mouse movement, etc. On this machine, however, this blanks the screen and then it never recovers. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 876613] [NEW] [Thinkpad T510] Plugging in DisplayPort causes Unity to crash
Public bug reported: Filing this against xorg initially as I'm not sure if it's related to the driver or if it's a Unity bug, though I've not seen this behaviour on other systems. Plugged an external monitor into the Thinkpad T510 (7375) using the DisplayPort port. The external monitor DID come alive and dislay at least the 11.10 background, but Unity crashed (panel, launcher and window-decorations all went away). I had to drop to a console and reset Unity to get all the controls back and working. Tried this twice and same thing happened each time. Plug in DisplayPort, Unity, Window decorations, Launcher all disappear even though external monitor comes on (also with no panel). unity --reset at console after unplugging external monitor to fix. I'm also attaching a short video showing this as it occurs. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 875241] [NEW] [Vostro 3750] external HDMI does not display desktop with Intel vide driver loaded
Public bug reported: Doing cert testing on a Vostro 3750. The Intel graphics card is currently in use. When I plug an external monitor into the VGA port on this machine, the system sits for many seconds before compiz crashes and then the external monitor shows the extended desktop. When connecting an external monitor to the HDMI output, however, the monitor power light changes color, indicating that it's getting some sort of signal (and the No Signal message box goes away) but no desktop ever appears on the external display. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 875252] [NEW] [Vostro 3750] Jockey says nvidia-current, but X keeps loading intel_drv
Public bug reported: On this vostro, the default is the intel driver using the intel graphics. However, Jockey tells me that nvidia current is enabled and in use, but no matter what I can't get X to actually load the nVidia driver. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 875304] [NEW] [Thinkpad T420] bad resolution, no driver options outside of nouveau
Public bug reported: This isn't specifically a Nouveau issue, though that's a factor... on the T420 previous certifications, 10.10 is 2D only and 11.04 says Proprietary drivers are required to get the full experience. However, with 11.10, there are no proprietary drivers available according to Jockey: ubuntu@201102-7315:~$ jockey-text -l ubuntu@201102-7315:~$ And so the only other option is nouveau, which looks horrible, and only provides 1024x768 and 800x600 which looks bad on this display. As 11.04 apparently had a working nVidia driver, this is a regression of sorts (even though it's an issue with a proprietary driver).
