[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1196712] [NEW] nvidia-310-updates 310.44-0ubuntu2: nvidia-310-updates kernel module failed to build

2013-07-01 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

I was humming along and appeared to be fine, then the system froze
completely and forced me to power-cycle to get it to come back to life.

On doing so, booting into the current 3.10 (3.10.0-1.8) kernel for
Saucy, there was no nvidia driver, and an error in the xorg logs saying
that the driver failed to load.

I was left with X in a failsafe mode, and no desktop, only a black
screen and an X cursor... no way to do anything useful at all.

To get to a working system, I had boot into the older 3.9.0-7.15 which
did have a working, compiled nvidia driver.

After trying (manually installed nvidia-experimental-310 because jockey

Jockey does not offer any drivers for this card. With Nouveau, compiz and

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1133192] [NEW] Screen goes wonky when HDMI device is plugged in

2013-02-26 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

On plugging in HDMI devices, the screen is scrambled. Pretty simple.

Boot and log in.
Plug in HDMI device
Watch the screen scramble

This occurs with the Radeon driver.

I managed to recover the system the first time by unplugging the device,
however, on the second attempt, the screen scrambled and stuck that way
and I had to reboot to recover the desktop.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1133980] [NEW] unable to resume from suspend with radeon driver

2013-02-26 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

While running 12.04.2 on an HP Pavilion dm1, the system is unable to
resume from suspend while running the radeon driver.

The system successfully suspends, but on resume, the system starts

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1133162] [NEW] video does not recover after suspend with nouveau driver

2013-02-25 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

When running 12.04.2 with the nouveau driver, the system (X) does not
recover after suspend and the system eventually freezes.

The machine starts to recover from suspend, however, the screen remains
black, or in one case, became a weird black and white zig-zag pattern
with a mouse pointer visible. At this point, the machine churns for a
bit then completely freezes, requiring a power-cycle to return to a
working state.

Installing the nVidia proprietary driver resolves this issue:
ii nvidia-common1:0.2.44.2
  Find obsolete NVIDIA drivers
ii nvidia-current-updates 304.64-0ubuntu0.2
NVIDIA binary Xorg driver, kernel module and VDPAU library

Using that as a workaround, I am able to suspend and resume this
machine.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1050700] [NEW] nvidia-current-updates 295.49-0ubuntu0.2: nvidia-current-updates kernel module failed to build

2012-09-13 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

Installed Quantal LTS backport kernel from X-Swat PPA

bladernr@klaatu:~$ uname -a
Linux klaatu 3.5.0-14-generic #16~precise1-Ubuntu SMP Tue Sep 11 16:06:18 UTC
2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

During the install, the nvidia-current driver failed to build. After a
reboot into the 3.5.0 kernel, I tried installing via Jockey, and that
too failed to build. I also tried installing nvidia-current-updates and
that also failed to build, triggering apport to fire off this bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 992664] [NEW] [Dell Latitude E6420] Screen corruption w/ intel driver

2012-05-01 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

After booting precise on the E6420, I started checkbox. When checkbox
started, there was some screen corruption/artifacting on the terminal

window I'm in, for instance).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 992899] [NEW] [Dell Vostro 3550] HDMI inoperative

2012-05-01 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

During certification testing of 12.04 LTS on the Vostro 3550 I observed
that the HDMI interface did not function properly. This was first
noticed using the default driver, then I tried with FGLRX.

In both cases, plugging a HDMI cable in resulted in nothing. This was
then checked against a different system and it worked well.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 990575] Re: Entire desktop becomes unresponsive after suspend/resume

2012-04-30 Thread Jeff Lane
Noticed this on multiple Lenovo systems and some Dells too. Steps to
recreate:

Boot precise.
Do some work for a while (maybe 15 minutes maybe longer)
close the lid
open the lid
when system resumes, the desktop may be frozen...

This doesn't happen every time I close the lid, but seems to occur after
the systems been running and working for a while. The desktop appears
frozen. There is still mouse pointer movement, but you'll note that the
cursor doesn't change as it moves across various types of windows,
clicks do nothing to icons, buttons, or whatever. Right click produces
no context menus, no tooltips appear on launcher icons.

** Summary changed:

- [Lenovo W510] Entire desktop becomes unresponsive after suspend/resume

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 990575] Re: Entire desktop becomes unresponsive after suspend/resume

2012-04-30 Thread Jeff Lane
Also, it's not nVidia dependent as first thought, as this occurs on
systems without nVidia cards installed. The only fix for this seems to
be rebooting, since CTRL-Alt-Bksp is disabled by default now. (or
sending a sighup to X, but who knows to do that?)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 992233] [NEW] [Lenovo E525] Switching video modes causes severe corruption / can't display larger modes

2012-04-30 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

To reproduce, install 12.04 LTS onto a Lenovo E525 with the ATI video card.
Run the script /usr/share/checkbox/scripts/xrandr_cycle

After the first few larger modes, video will become horribly corrupted
and may not recover once the script tries to restore the original mode.

Essentially, the script determines what modes are availabe then switches
to those modes to verify they work. Once the resolution gets small
enough (less pixels), I noted severe screen corruption.

See the attached video. the fun really stars around the 30 second mark.
On that video, the screen did not recover afterwards. I had to
powercycle the machine to get the screen back to a usable state.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 990575] [NEW] [Lenovo W510] Entire desktop becomes unresponsive after suspend/resume

2012-04-28 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

Doing certification testing on the Lenovo W510. During testing, I
closed the lid and re-opened. The system suspended. I pressed the
power button to resume and once it was awake again, the desktop was
present but not usable.

I can move the pointer around freely, but the pointer never changes from
the Text pointer to the arrow as it moves over various areas of hte
desktop. Clicks to windows or launcher icons or panel icons do not
produce any results. Right clicks do not produce any context menus.

There is no way out of this. Because CTRL-ALT-BKSP was decided to be
such a bad thing, a user in this position has only two options. Reboot,
or drop to a console and kill X.

I reset X by dropping to a console and sending it a SIGHUP.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 959747] [NEW] X displays a lot of left-over video garbage when logging in

2012-03-19 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

This is the first time I've used the Nouveau driver as this is really
the first time I've felt it good enough to use full time (I haven't
tried it since 10.04). But now that I've done a brand new install of
Precise on my Alienware M15x with the nVidia GT240m GPU, I'm running
nouveau.

It's not a major issue, but I do see a lot of garbage, presumably left
over in video ram when I log in to Ubuntu. This goes away after several
seconds (somewhere between 5 and 10 seconds) but A: it looks very
concerning when it happens, and B: if you look close enough, it's
possible that someone logging into the system could catch snippets of
private information as it's dumped to the screen between hitting enter
on lightdm (after entering the password) and the desktop fully loading.

So there's a very slight security/privacy concern there.

I am not sure what causes this, I'm thinking it's cached or left over
vram data perhaps, but the person logging in will get to see bits and
pieces of previous desktop sessions, including text, pictures, etc.

So on the one hand, it looks scary, and may be daunting and provide bad
associations to new users with similar hardware, and on the other hand,
as mentioned above, there is a slight concern for privacy and security
if someone else is logging onto the machine and getting to see bits of
the last person's desktop.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 959747] Re: X displays a lot of left-over video garbage when logging in

2012-03-19 Thread Jeff Lane
I shot this video with my iPhone just to show you what actually appears
on screen between LightDM and the desktop.

I don't recall noticing this with the nVidia proprietary drivers, to be
honest, at least not to this degree. It's well possible that I just
trained myself to ignore it over the years with nVidia_current, but I
don't recall ever seeing THIS much detail from a previous session when
the garbage appears on screen.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 863459] Re: Really bad artifacting on Lenovo S10 after upgrade to Oneiric

2011-12-19 Thread Jeff Lane
Yikes... somehow I completely overlooked updating this.

Anyway, at some point (not sure when) and update did indeed resolve this
issue. Unity seems happy, though the whole system seems a little
sluggish (but that's to be expected on a first gen Atom with only 1.5GB
RAM shared between video and CPU).

In any case, an update after release did indeed resolve the artifacting
problems I was encountering. Good show!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 877695] Re: Desktop does not revert when unplugging external VGA with nouveau

2011-10-19 Thread Jeff Lane
** Summary changed:

- [Latitude E6510] Desktop does not revert when unplugging external VGA with
nouveau
+ Desktop does not revert when unplugging external VGA with nouveau

** Description changed:

- Testing the E6510 with Oneiric. I have discovered that neither external
- VGA nor Display port work with the nvidia driver from nvidia_current. I
- have also discovered that DisplayPort does not work with nouveau.
- However, External VGA does seem to work with nouveau. BUT the problem
- arises when you unplug the external display.
+ Testing the E6510 (7383) with Oneiric. I have discovered that neither
+ external VGA nor Display port work with the nvidia driver from
+ nvidia_current. I have also discovered that DisplayPort does not work
+ with nouveau. However, External VGA does seem to work with nouveau.
+ BUT the problem arises when you unplug the external display.

I've managed to recreate this every time by doing the following:
  1: Verify you're running nouveau
2: plug in a monitor via external VGA on the 6510.
3: Verify desktop has been extended. I do this simply with CTRL+ALT+Arrow to
open the switcher. When configured for dual desktops, you'll see each quadrant
split into two with a blue bar under the Primary desktop.
  4: Unplug the monitor
5: wait a few seconds and then do CTRL+ALT+Arrow to open the switcher and
notice that the desktops are STILL split into two as though the monitor was
connected.
6: open something that creates secondary popups. Typing ubuntu-bug xorg in a
terminal window does great. You'll notice that while the main apport window
may or may not appear on the visible screen, if you open the switcher again,
you'll notice that popups are appearing on the extended display, and without
the external monitor, there's no way to get to them.

You can further confirm this by plugging the monitor back in and you'll
see the popup once that monitor comes online.

This is a blocker as well because once this happens, the only way to
restore usablility is to reboot. I tried unity --reset and tried simply
logging out and back in to restart X. Both cases resulted in the system
  freezing, necessitating a reboot anyway.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 877695] Re: Desktop does not revert when unplugging external VGA with nouveau

2011-10-19 Thread Jeff Lane
Further details... also seen on Thinkpad W510 (6974) running Nouveau...

the desktop can be reverted to single monitor mode by running the
Displays applet... but if you don't know to do that, and expect the
desktop to revert itself, you may never realize the issue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 877686] [NEW] [Latitude E6510] External DisplayPort does not work with Nouveau driver

2011-10-18 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

Testing Oneiric on the E6510. During testing, attempted to connect a
monitor using the system's external DisplayPort video port. The system
was running nouveau. This port is completely inoperative with nouveau
driver. (it's also inop with nvidia_current).

The logs may indicate that the system is using nvidia rather than
nouveau, that is because I tested this with nouveau, then installed
nvidia_current to verify the behaviour and that's what's currently
installed and running.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 877682] [NEW] [Latitude E6510] External Video inoperative with nVidia current

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 877695] [NEW] [Latitude E6510] Desktop does not revert when unplugging external VGA with nouveau

2011-10-18 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

Testing the E6510 with Oneiric. I have discovered that neither external
VGA nor Display port work with the nvidia driver from nvidia_current. I
have also discovered that DisplayPort does not work with nouveau.
However, External VGA does seem to work with nouveau. BUT the problem
arises when you unplug the external display.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 877719] [NEW] [Latitude E6510] xset dpms off causes X to freeze with nvidia_current

2011-10-18 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

Running the nvidia driver on the e6510 (7383) and during testing,
there's a test for powersaving features that blanks the screen using
'xset dpms force off'. On every other system so far this just causes
the screen to blank and quickly return using a keypress, mouse movement,
etc.

On this machine, however, this blanks the screen and then it never
recovers. I can still cleanly shutdown by pressing the power button
(not holding it to force a power off, but a soft shutdown. The system
actually goes through the shutdown sequence).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 877695] Re: [Latitude E6510] Desktop does not revert when unplugging external VGA with nouveau

2011-10-18 Thread Jeff Lane
This has been observed on a Latitude E6510 (7383) and a Lenovo Edge 13
(6964) so I think it's not limited to one video card or driver, but more
a problem with X.

This did NOT occur on a Thinkpad T420s which is only capable of running
Unity 2D on the Intel discreet card. So this may be related to Unity 3d
only...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 877765] [NEW] [Latitude E6510] X crashes when lid is closed

2011-10-18 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

Current power settings are Do Not Suspend on inactivity for both battery
and mains; Suspend on lid close for both battery and mains.

If I suspend the system using pm-suspend, the system successfully
suspends and I can resume safely. However, every time I close the lid,
instead of getting a suspend, X crashes. This system is currently
running Nouveau.

2011-10-17 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

Ran certification stress tests over night on the Thinkpad Edge 11

in this morning, I discovered the system in this state. Not sure what
caused the issue, but there is a trace in Xorg.0.log.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 876613] [NEW] [Thinkpad T510] Plugging in DisplayPort causes Unity to crash

2011-10-17 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

Filing this against xorg initially as I'm not sure if it's related to
the driver or if it's a Unity bug, though I've not seen this behaviour
on other systems.

Plugged an external monitor into the Thinkpad T510 (7375) using the
DisplayPort port. The external monitor DID come alive and dislay at
least the 11.10 background, but Unity crashed (panel, launcher and
window-decorations all went away). I had to drop to a console and reset
Unity to get all the controls back and working.

Tried this twice and same thing happened each time. Plug in
DisplayPort, Unity, Window decorations, Launcher all disappear even
though external monitor comes on (also with no panel). unity --reset at
console after unplugging external monitor to fix.

I'm also attaching a short video showing this as it occurs.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 875800] [NEW] [Vostrp 3550] no 3d available with fglrx driver

2011-10-16 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

Installed 11.10 on this Dell Vostro 3550. Jockey offered to install the
proprietary FGLRX driver to give me 3d acceleration. I installed fglrx,
restarted the system and tried, but still got 2d unity. Regardless of
whether I selected Unity or Unity 2D in LightDM, I always get 2D Unity.

I then tried installing fglrx_updates from Jockey but that package fails

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 875241] [NEW] [Vostro 3750] external HDMI does not display desktop with Intel vide driver loaded

2011-10-15 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

Doing cert testing on a Vostro 3750. The Intel graphics card is
currently in use. When I plug an external monitor into the VGA port on
this machine, the system sits for many seconds before compiz crashes and
then the external monitor shows the extended desktop.

When connecting an external monitor to the HDMI output, however, the
monitor power light changes color, indicating that it's getting some
sort of signal (and the No Signal message box goes away) but no
desktop ever appears on the external display.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 875252] [NEW] [Vostro 3750] Jockey says nvidia-current, but X keeps loading intel_drv

2011-10-15 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

On this vostro, the default is the intel driver using the intel
graphics. However, Jockey tells me that nvidia current is enabled and
in use, but no matter what I can't get X to actually load the nVidia
driver.

This could be a case where the nVidia GPU is just disabled (some of the
recent dells have this issue) but the certifications for this model do
not mention GPU issues at all.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 875304] [NEW] [Thinkpad T420] bad resolution, no driver options outside of nouveau

2011-10-15 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

This isn't specifically a Nouveau issue, though that's a factor... on
the T420 previous certifications, 10.10 is 2D only and 11.04 says
Proprietary drivers are required to get the full experience. However,
with 11.10, there are no proprietary drivers available according to
Jockey:

ubuntu@201102-7315:~$ jockey-text -l
ubuntu@201102-7315:~$

And so the only other option is nouveau, which looks horrible, and only
provides 1024x768 and 800x600 which looks bad on this display.

As 11.04 apparently had a working nVidia driver, this is a regression of
sorts (even though it's an issue with a proprietary driver).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 875309] [NEW] [Thinkpad T420] External video inoperative

driver available to try with. So, there is effectively no external
