Thanks Matthew for the suggestion. Unfortunately it still gives refresh problems with compiz disabled. I've just done a reinstall of the 2.6.28-11 kernel and upgraded to the -13 kernel (a new download of Kubuntu). With both the original 180.44 driver and the new 185.18.14 one I still get this problem. One thing that seems very odd is that I left conky on the screen when I shut-down the session.
