[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1183089] Re: xorg freezes on macbook air unplugging thunderbolt display

2013-05-24 Thread Konstantin Nazarov
I'm willing to do some kernel debugging if necessary, including git bisects,
recompilation and minor modifications.
I'm not that good in kernel hacking, although I'll be able to help at least
partially.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1183089] Re: xorg freezes on macbook air without external thunderbolt display

2013-05-23 Thread Konstantin Nazarov
Chris,

Is there anything else I can do to verify that this is really an hotplug
irq storm?

Maybe some debugging information or additional logs will help?

2013-05-23 Thread Konstantin Nazarov
Installed kernel 3.10:

knazarov:~/ $ uname -a
 [15:54:12]
Linux kn 3.10.0-994-generic #201305230446 SMP Thu May 23 08:47:34 UTC 2013
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

The lockup still happens the same way as before. Only this time I'm able
to access the machine via network.

I see X consuming 26% CPU.

Tried to kill it, without any results. It is still shown in process list
with the same PID.

The same stack traces appead in dmesg.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1183089] Re: xorg freezes on macbook air unplugging thunderbolt display

2013-05-23 Thread Konstantin Nazarov
Chris,

Is it possible that there is some physical damage on the connector
inside the laptop that causes jitter, which in turn causes continuous
triggering of the corresponding APIC line?

Is there a way to verify it?

And do you know if I can manually switch the handling of this particular
hotplug event to the polling mode (i.e. by disabling the interrupt)?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1183089] [NEW] xorg freezes on macbook air without external thunderbolt display

2013-05-22 Thread Konstantin Nazarov
Public bug reported:

Xorg hangs on macbook air mid 2012 when the external thunderbolt display is
being unplugged.
Also, when I try to boot without the external display, the OS hangs immediately
on the kernel boot splash.

If I then plug the display in again, the OS unfreezes and continues to
run just fine.

The lockup is hard, so machine becomes unaccessible via the network.

Started to happen after a month or so of running Ubuntu. OSX is not susceptible
to any of the mentioned problems.
Clearing NVRAM and applying latest firmware updates doesn't help.

This is what I see in dmesg:

Looks like some modesetting bug.

The same happens on fresh installations of both 12.10 and 13.04 and even
when I boot from live CD/USB.
