Only this time I'm able to access the machine via network. I see X consuming 26% CPU. Tried to kill it, without any results. It is still shown in process list with the same PID. Chris, Is it possible that there is some physical damage on the connector inside the laptop that causes jitter, which in turn causes continuous triggering of the corresponding APIC line? Is there a way to verify it? Public bug reported: Xorg hangs on macbook air mid 2012 when the external thunderbolt display is being unplugged. Also, when I try to boot without the external display, the OS hangs immediately on the kernel boot splash. If I then plug the display in again, the OS unfreezes and continues to run just fine. The lockup is hard, so machine becomes unaccessible via the network. Started to happen after a month or so of running Ubuntu. OSX is not susceptible to any of the mentioned problems. Clearing NVRAM and applying latest firmware updates doesn't help.
