i added nomodeset as that was the only way the beta1 graphical install worked, 
the other was added in an effort to fix the issue
removing both fixed the black screen and low res issues thank you

the black screen happens after grub and before lightdm loads, for me it stays 
black due to needing a password for my encrypted boot drive, but i never see 
this prompt due to the black screen
i can type this password in even with the blank screen and X is then shown but 
the resolution is still 800x600 not 1024x600

when booting i have to use recovery mode otherwise all i get is a black screen
when i do select recovery mode i have only 800x600 as an option for my
