I once had trouble getting full native resolution on an external
2560x1080 monitor.  It turned out to be a problem with the DisplayPort
-> HDMI monitor cable I had (not enough bandwidth without using a custom
reduced frequency mode via xrandr/way harded custom EDID hacks for
wayland), and switching to a better cable (DP -> DP, rated for 4K video)
allowed me full use of the monitor.

Have you ruled out hardware/cable problems by, e.g. booting to a
different OS, or trying a different cable?

Tested the scilab 5.5.2 for ubuntu which works great. 
However, I did not test it before applying the jogl2 patch :-o.  

Had a look at the source and it seems that the Ubuntu version is patched to use 
the
generic version of jogl2. 

I would like to try and get this patch integrated in the Scilab source tree. 
Probably a difficult and slow process.

I tested the proposed package on Lubuntu 17.10.

I tested some example programs they use either:
GLProfile glp = GLProfile.getDefault();
Or they use the GLCanvas default constructor.

Before this version all these examples emitted the typical error found
in the previous version of jogl2. The new package RESOLVED this problem.

I noticed after some experimenting that replacing getDefault with 
get(GLProfile.GL2);
also solved the problem. Then I found this thread.

I build scilab from source using the git repository. This is the master
and future 6.1 version it has the same problem. However, scilab 6 and
higher have the jogl2 library prebuild and distributed as a thirdparty
library. Removing this library doesn't work. The problem is that the
scirender module and the gui modules depend on the old syntax. The Java
path in the past was javax.media. In newer version of jogl2 this changed
to com.jogamp. This means that besides removing the faulty library from
scilab the modules scirender and gui need to be patched. I did just this
in the last days. The git master branch version 6.1 build and works with
the new jogl2 version. I noticed however one regression bug the cursor
selection in the plot window work kind of inverted. This is an old bug
which I have seen before.

So, yes this fixes the jogl2 bug. But, no likely not the scilab bug.
Depends how you get scilab and which version probably.

Update: During the issue, the following commands showed that the mouse's
button1 (left button) was pressed, so the action info passes the driver:

xinput --test "Logitech MX Anywhere 2"
sudo cat /dev/input/mouse3 | od -x

If I turn off the mouse then I need to make a click with the left button
of the touchpad to reset somehow the issue, otherwise, when I turn the
mouse back on, the issue is still there.

Same problem on Mint 17.3 (4.2.5-040205-generic #201510270124 SMP Tue
Oct 27 01:25:49 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux), with Bluetooth
Logitech v470 and later with Logitech MX anywhere 2 (using Unifying
receiver on USB).

As soon as I shut down the mouse from it's on/off button, the touchpad
left button start working again. If I turn on again the mouse, it works
for a few tens of minutes close to 1-2 hours after which the same issue
occurs.

I doubt it has any relation but it's worth mentioning I am also using
Virtual Box machines on this Dell E7440 laptop (thinking of the mouse
capture feature). Unfortunately, I did not check to see if it happens
with or without having a VM turned on.

You are totaly right.
My system is running again but I am not sure what happens wenn the new 
updat (upgrade) is comming.
So far so good I can use my PC and I say thanks to all off them who 
helped me and the other ones.

I normaly log-in wthout username and password but now the screen is

Well, the new FGLRX is only in proposed, so most users are still affected. The 
only sane option in my point of view would be to release a new kernel without 
the patch that broke things originally.
Don't forget that the fix here does nothing for people that installed FGLRX 
directly from the AMD website...

@Giacomo: here, with a HD 7970, I'm stuck on the login screen (I log-in,
the screen flicker and I'm back at the login screen). I guess the
"brokenness" depends on the video card.

Yes all off my bug reports are generated during the update or upgrade
from this morning.


now I try to startup again after stoped my PC becaus I had to go outside and 
then when I arived back home I want to start my PC and he asks my password 
(normaly I start up without) but in this case I gave my password but 


he comes back with the same opening screen it seems that he dont
recognise my password.


What can I do to startup normaly?

I built a patched 2:2.99.914-1~exp1ubuntu4.2mg1 (debdiff applied fine,
except for the debian/changelog bits) and uploaded it to my ppa
(ppa:mgedmin/ppa).  I'm currently running it: shadows are fine.

I've backported the upstream patch to the xserver-xorg-video-intel
package from utopic-updates and can confirm that it fixes the broken
window shadows for GTK+ 3.14 apps that use client decorations (e.g.
gedit).

They had the bug in xorg-x11-drv-intel-2.99.914-2.fc21.x86_64 and
included the fix in xorg-x11-drv-intel-2.99.914-3.fc21.  If I were more
familiar with Fedora's infrastructure I'm sure I could find the patch
with the backported fix and maybe even identify the upstream commit.

  When the laptop is either set to sleep by entering Fn-F1 or by timeout,
  the screen is black after waking it up again (using the power button, it
  does not wake by mousepad movement or key presses).
  
  In earlier Ubuntu versions (14.04), a workaround was to enter a terminal
  console by hitting CTRL-ALT-F1, CTRL-ALT-F7, but that does not seem to
  work anymore.
  
  The problem is is present in todays (2014-12-8) Vivid daily image
  (booted with "nomodeset", but not done any configuration of the screen).

When the laptop is either set to sleep by entering Fn-F1 or by timeout,
the screen is black after waking it up again (using the power button, it
does not wake by mousepad movement or key presses).

In earlier Ubuntu versions (14.04), a workaround was to enter a terminal
console by hitting CTRL-ALT-F1, CTRL-ALT-F7, but that does not seem to
work anymore.

The problem is is present in todays (2014-12-8) Vivid daily image
(booted with "nomodeset", but not done any configuration of the screen).

I contacted Dell support about the issue, and in addition to being
requested to upgrade the BIOS, I was also pointed to this new driver
package:
http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=V9HNV

I have not yet tried is, as it might only work for 12.04 Dell branded
Ubuntu, but I see that it contains many .deb files that might work for
newer versions too, including Nvidia drivers and "screen-resolution-
extra[..].deb".

Does anyone running the original Dell supported Ubuntu version see this
issue? If so, does the driver package above solve the problem?

As this is seen both with Nvidia driver and nouveau driver, I guess this
is not related to these drivers, but an issue in Xorg, or some
communication between BIOS and kernel/Xorg to wake up the screen again.

This issue is reproducible by running "xset dpms force off; sleep 5;
xset dpms force on" in a terminal inside X.

Ok, I also have A09 released 2014-06-26. The other thing I did was to
install the latest Nvidia drivers in Windows, but I did not think this
updates any firmware in the graphics card?

After that, I have almost not seen this issue anymore, but maybe once.

Looks like transset is not doing the "does the window have WM_STATE?
recurse through its children if not" logic employed by xprop/xwininfo.
Compare Get_Window_Under_Cursor from transset/dsimple.c and
Select_Window from xprop/dsimple.c).

The problem seems to be with the window ID: instead of picking up the
gnome-terminal window (id 0x0166) I clicked on it picked up some
strange unnamed 1366x741+0-0 window at +0+27, probably belonging to
gnome-shell.

and click on a window, but when I try the same with

Trusty has gnome-settings-daemon 3.8.6.  Support for XF86AudioMicMute was added 
in gnome-settings-daemon 3.9.2:

I believe gnome-settings-daemon (and unity-settings-daemon) need to
backport that patch for XF86AudioMicMute support.

"The issue is that after the hotplug interrupt is sent by the hardware,
the monitor is not yet ready to respond to the DDC probes and generates
a NAK instead - this leads us to conclude that there is nothing on the
other end of the connector"

so it looks like a genuine upstream bug in the Intel graphics kernel
driver.

Tried talking about this on IRC (#intel-gfx on FreeNode).  It was
suggested to me to capture the kernel log after setting drm.debug to
0x5.  That produced quite a lot of log output (70 thousand lines in

I didn't have a DisplayPort cable before.  I used an analog VGA cable
and hotplug detection worked reliably.

I could boot a 12.04 LTS LiveCD and test it, if it's important.

I'd like to help debug this.  It would help if I knew how hotplug
detection is supposed to work, and what tools there are for me to see
where it gets lost.   Does the Intel video kernel driver do the
detection?  Does it poll or wait for an interrupt?  How does the kernel
communicate hotplug events to userspace?  What tool do I run to watch
for those events?

1.  Launch xbmc (I use version 2:12.3~git20131213.0944-frodo-0precise from 
http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc/ppa/ubuntu/)
2. Press \ a few times to toggle fullscreen mode

What happens: X segfaults and I'm thrown back to the login screen.
(xbmc also segfaults, but I don't care as much about that.  It should
not be able to bring X down.)

Apport failed to attach certain unnamed log files because this is a user
account with no privileges (with autologin enabled).  I will attach them
if you can tell me which ones are important.  E.g. dmesg doesn't contain
anything about the X segfault (it mentions xbmc-bin segfaulting though),
while /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old has a (useless-looking) backtrace.

Note that I use a VGA cable, and still have the issues. I have only one 
external monitor, connected with VGA.
The laptop display works fine (cannot be turned off, as far as I tried).

Any suggestions for workarounds appreciated. The system is hardly usable
with the external monitor (e.g. surfing on the web & scrolling).

I tried lxde desktop, it behaves the same.
