[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1772588] Re: Remove obsolete X11 drivers from the archive

2020-04-06 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Good. Just to emphasize, Geode doesn't make sense on distros where the
base level for i386 is 686-PAE, since none of the Geodes have PAE (most
Geodes are i586, except for Geode LX which is 686 without PAE).

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1772588] Re: Remove obsolete X11 drivers from the archive

2020-04-03 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
As I have previously commented, the geode driver is NOT obsolete. It
should not be removed at Debian, where i386 is still 686 without PAE.

Please ammend the Debian bug report accordingly.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 873942]

2018-08-11 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Thanks for the patch.

This does a fair job of avoiding an explicit crash whenever DDC is
unavailable.

When that happens, restricting available modes to those that AMD
considers safe i.e. Panel-friendly modes, is indeed a promising
strategy.

However, that strategy doesn't guarantee that the selected mode is
something that the connected VGA monitor can handle. It's a shot in the
dark and the mode we try, 1920x1440, is a large enough size (and an
uncommon enough resolution) that we cannot consider that shot in the
dark to be a safe one.

Thinking out loud, 800x600, 1024x768 or 1280x1024 would probably be
safer modes to attempt whenever DDC is unavailable, pretty much in that
order.

2018-05-23 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
> -geode: i386 only, no kernel support since moving to i586 (or i686?)

The Geode LX is an i686 without PAE. It is still supported by the Linux
kernel.

However, the Geode KMS driver that someone had started working on was
never merged into the kernel tree. This means that xf86-video-geode
won't work without the X root wrapper and it cannot be used with GNOME
or any other DE that depend upon KSM-enabled drivers. It still works
fine with e.g. LXDE however.

2014-09-11 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
AFAIK the package used to be a part of Main.

However, its usefulness since Precise is doubtful, considering how
Ubuntu optimizes the i386 archive for i686-PAE. Basically, unless Ubuntu
miraculously decides to support non-PAE x86 hosts again, building the
Geode module for Ubuntu is pointless.

2011-12-06 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Basically, the short answer to laptop support with the Geode X driver
seems to be that it needs a custom xorg.conf for each laptop, since it
cannot probe the display for ideal size.

Upstream developers have now documented this fact and provided command
examples for calculating display modes along with a sample xorg.conf
that shows how the command's result can be used. This will be included
in xf86-video-geode 2.11.13 to be released shortly.

Still an issue with Precise. However, I'm not sure of what should be the
correct deadkey character that appears in that image.

This being said, as Sergey points out in the upstream bug,
dead_belowcomma is a valid character, so this should at least be a
usable configuration, and yet it still makes console-setup complain
loudly as described above.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 886833] Re: gdm-greeter unusable because filled with pixel garbage

2011-11-07 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Purging -nouveau and letting X use -nv instead fixed it. Re-installing
-nouveauand checking the X log revealed that AIGLX libraries
nouveau_vieux_dir.so cannot be found at the expected path. Could this be
the cause?

** Package changed: gdm (Ubuntu) = xserver-xorg-video-nouveau (Ubuntu)

** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau (Ubuntu)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 873942] Re: Xubuntu LiveCD won't boot into graphical mode with AMD Geode LX

The issue is caused by the BIOS settings which configured the video
output's DDC pins as a serial console. This makes monitor probing fail.
The only cure is to specify the desired resolution in /etc/X11/xorg.conf

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 738314] [NEW] xkb-data: incorrect Finnish kotoisuus keymap

2011-03-19 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xkeyboard-config

According to
https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/fi/wiki/Tiedosto:KB_Finnish_Multilingual.svg
the hyphen key should have some deadkey diacritic that would appear OVER
a letter but, instead, /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/fi has
dead_belowcomma, which is apparently a non-existent symbol, which makes
console-setup complain loudly.

key AB10 { [ minus, underscore, endash,
dead_belowcomma   ] };

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 625280] Re: SRU: xserver-xorg-video-geode 2.11.11-1 to Lucid

2011-01-03 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
The current upstream (also present in Natty) works as-is on Lucid, as
can be verified via my own PPA's packages. If this is satisfactory, I
could upload this. if I should instead remain stricter to the SRU
policy, I'll need a bit more time to weed through the changes and only
extract essential ones.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 625280] Re: SRU: xserver-xorg-video-geode 2.11.9-1 to Lucid and older supported releases

2010-12-06 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
I suppose that I could do it myself, since I have access to test
hardware for a variety of LX platforms.

Please note that upstream is now up to version 2.11.10, which is still a
bugfix release. However, some of the fixes only apply to X servers 1.8
or newer, which means that we can skip them for Lucid.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 433142] Re: geode driver do not display 1024x600 on (K)UNR Karmic

2010-11-21 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Frank, I have no idea why setting ret=7 in lx_panel.c did not produce
any effect.

However, I'm concerned that this is turning into a big ugly hack that
will require people to compile their own driver, simply because setting
the desired mode is now completely dependent upon being able to change a
setting in the BIOS, which is not always possible.

2010-11-19 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
I sincerely doubt that the BIOS would be set to 800x600 since this
laptop's display only supports 320x240, 640x480 and 1024x600. However,
800x600 happens to be our driver's default fall-back resolution, so this
is probably what we're seeing.

2010-11-19 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Adding ret=7; does not fix it. It indeed makes several new modes appear
but none of them is 1024x600. Anyhow, it doesn't fix the fact that this
display only supports 60Hz refresh rates, while the settings for slot 7
is at 80Hz, either.

2010-11-19 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
It also remains unclear to me what is the proper way to select that
1024x...@60 mode. I already know that DDC won't work since we're using a
panel, so we must obviously select the resolution we want using an
xorg.conf option. However, the xorg.conf variants attached to this bug
report use different methods for configuring this and I need to know
which one is the right one, so that I can document this in the README.

One item I'd like to point out in the above X log is that both Panel and

2010-11-02 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
I have uploaded a slightly newer version of this driver to my PPA as a
Lucid package.

The main difference now is that the 1024x600 resolution will only be
available if the BIOS has the Panel output mode enabled. Also, the
refresh rate was updated from 60Hz to 80Hz.

Can everyone please confirm whether this works as expected, when the
resolution is selected via the monitor configuration tool shown above in
Comment #86?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 625280] [NEW] SRU: xserver-xorg-video-geode 2.11.9-1 to Lucid and older supported releases

2010-08-27 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-geode

Advanced Micro Devices recently assigned two engineers to maintain the
code of xf86-video-geode and the first tangible result of this was the
recent release of version 2.11.9 of the driver, which fixes several
rendering issues and code base regressions. Also, as a byproduct of
fixing one rendering issue, the performance of the driver was greatly
enhanced.

Some of the bugs closed by this release were found via the upstream Free
Desktop Bugzilla, while others were found in distribution-specific bug
trackers at Debian, Fedora and Ubuntu. Other issues still were
discovered and fixed in the process of fixing those aforementioned bugs.
More details can be found in the upstream ChangeLog.

Thus, it would be desirable to push the Maverick 2.11.9-1 version of
this package into all currently supported Ubuntu releases.

Test packages have already been built via my PPA. Building for
Intrepid, Jaunty, Karmic and Lucid requires no modification.

Meanwhile, building for Hardy requires minor adjustments to Build-
Depends and debian/rules. Comparing the Hardy and Lucid versions of the
2.11.9-1 package in my PPA shows how small the difference in packaging
is.

This is strictly a bugfix release. It results from the return of AMD to the
development team and closes all current known issues from Debian and Ubuntu
and from other distributions. Unless any regression is reported within this
week, this is expected to be released as-is as Geode 2.11.9 by August 16th.

Changelog entries since current maverick version 2.11.8-7:
