[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 562005] Re: Backlight controls of laptops with NVIDIA NVS and Quadro FX 880M GPUs no longer function while using proprietary drivers
What version is no longer supported? Really? We need to open up a new bug report for a bug that's 5 years old and counting? This has never been fixed, and likely never will be by nvidia. I'm currently on the last supported version, 340.76, in Xubuntu 14.04. Still doesn't work. But we *should* keep a bug report open on this, at least as a monument to nvidia's apathy. ** Changed in: nvidia-graphics-drivers (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid = Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/562005 Title: Backlight controls of laptops with NVIDIA NVS and Quadro FX 880M GPUs no longer function while using proprietary drivers To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-certification/+bug/562005/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 562005] Re: Backlight controls of laptops with NVIDIA NVS and Quadro FX 880M GPUs no longer function while using proprietary drivers
For my future reference, and possibly others: After installing Xubuntu 14.04 on my Thinkpad W510, generating /etc/X11/xorg.conf with nvidia-settings and adding the EnableBrightnessControl line to the Devices section and rebooting did not work (it worked in Xubuntu 12.10). Instead, I had to create a /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-nvidia-brightness.conf file and add the Devices section to that. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 562005] Re: Backlight controls of laptops with NVIDIA NVS and Quadro FX 880M GPUs no longer function while using proprietary drivers
Xubuntu 12.10 updated to nvidia 304.88 a day or so ago, and now brightness controls are even more uneven than before. I've tried regenerating xorg.conf using nvidia-settings, and re-adding [Option RegistryDwords EnableBrightnessControl=1] to the Device section, but that hasn't helped. I also tried nvidia 313.30 from xorg-edgers, but brightness controls seemed to be just as uneven. 3 years and this still hasn't been fixed. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 557224] Re: resume broken on ATI radeon RV250
I have the same problem on my Thinkpad T41 with RV250 on Maverick. Plus, there's some video corruption of the ubuntu logo during bootup and shutdown. So, I thought I'd try turning off kernel mode setting (KMS). I'm running grub2. In /etc/default/grub, I replaced this line: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash with this line: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash nomodeset Now, resuming from suspend seems to work perfectly. I'm not sure whether there's a performance hit by not using KMS. Is nomodeset the default when installing Maverick on older AGP radeon systems like these? Should it be in Natty? I'm getting this as well on my Lenovo Thinkpad W510 with an Nvidia Quadro FX 880M, and it's very random. Doesn't seem to matter if it's a cold boot. The odds seem to be about 50/50 of booting up normally, or booting up to the X dialog in low-graphics mode. When I choose restart X in the X dialog, I get the gnome login screen at low-res. From there I reboot and hope for the best. My Xorg.conf is a generic one generated by the nvidia config applet (which reports nvidia driver version 195.36.24). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 544869] Re: Suspend fails to resume on Dell 8600 / ATI video
After a bit more testing, I've noticed some further subtleties. When I get a black screen (as opposed to the weird marbled one that gets brighter and brighter) on resume from suspend, I do in fact get a mouse cursor. What's more, the mouse switches to a text insertion I bar when I hover it over the spot where the password entry box should be displayed. Also, it doesn't seem the CPU is being loaded - no hot air blowing out. Finally, with the black screen I can switch to another TTY. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 544869] Re: Suspend fails to resume on Dell 8600 / ATI video
Tormod, I just tried the /daily/current snapshot (2.6.34 from 2010-03-25), and I can't seem to boot with it. Not even in recovery mode. I get a screen of log messages that stop at about 0.4 seconds at kernel_thread_helper or ? uart_send_xchar or ? uart_register_driver, and then I have to do a hard reset. Same goes for the next most recent snapshot (2.6.34. from 2010-03-15). Maybe I'm doing something wrong. I also just did a big update (~100MB), which included some plymouth stuff. Now I get a plymouth error on bootup with the normal 2.6.32-17 kernel. I've also noticed that sometimes when I get the black screen on resume, I might not get the mouse cursor or the ability to switch TTYs. -- Suspend fails to resume on Dell 8600 / ATI video https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/544869 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is the registrant for xserver-xorg-driver-ati. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 510004] Re: [lucid regression] random graphics effects after resume from suspend to RAM
I have what sounds like a similar problem on my Thinkpad T41, which has an ATI RV250 GPU. This is 32 bit Lucid, upgraded from Karmic. Suspend/resume worked fine in Karmic. I'm using the default open-source ATI drivers. This is a really old GPU by the way. Hibernate/resume works fine in Lucid. Suspend seems to work fine, both when closing the lid, and clicking the Sleep icon. When I resume, either by opening the lid or pressing the power button, everything seems to come back up, but initially the screen is blank, though I can tell the backlight is on. Then, over the course of a few seconds, a strange marble-like pattern starts to emerge on the screen, and it gets progressively brighter and brighter over the course of a few minutes, until the whole screen is full white. There's no mouse cursor visible. I can't seem to switch to another TTY. If I remember correctly, the fan speed stays pretty high, so the cpu might be under some load. I think the wireless indicator turns on. There's the normal occasional hard drive activity, and I'm pretty sure one time I punched in my password, and by dead reckoning managed to click the system menu, and then the switch off item, and got the system to shut down normally. Otherwise, I have no choice but to do a hard power off. Seeing as I don't have an nvidia gpu, should I open a new bug, or can someone point me to an existing bug? -- [lucid regression] random graphics effects after resume from suspend to RAM https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/510004 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

I'm having the same problem on my Thinkpad T41 with Radeon Mobility 9000 (RV250) GPU. This is a problem that showed up in lucid, but wasn't present in karmic. Resume seems to work, backlight turns on right away (I can even control the backlight level), but I either get: 1) A black screen 2) A screen that starts out mostly dark, but then a sort of marbled pattern emerges on screen that gets progressively brighter over a minute or two, until the whole screen is basically white. Very strange. There's no mouse cursor visible. From the fan and the heat, I think the CPU is at 100%. I can't switch to another TTY using ctrl-alt-F1 or any other F key. I have to do a hard shutdown. Once or twice I managed to shut down normally using dead reckoning with the mouse, or by simply pressing the power button for a short while (this presumably brought up the shut down dialog box), and then hitting enter. Sometimes when I reboot after a hard shutdown, the network manager starts up with networking disabled for some reason, and I have to manually re-enable it. ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: New = Confirmed ** Also affects: xserver-xorg-driver-ati Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Suspend fails to resume on Dell 8600 / ATI video https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/544869 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is the registrant for xserver-xorg-driver-ati. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 374780] Re: [RV250] thinkpad t40 with ati radeon rv 250 (M 9000) freezes
I just did a full update of my karmic installation on my Thinkpad T41. Turning on compiz *still* causes screen corruption, with full system lockup soon after. I also just tried booting from the karmic release candidate live cd (off of USB), which still defaults to having compiz turned on. Again, I get screen corruption, followed by a full system lockup soon after. This is embarrassing. We're 7 days aways from the final release, and this is still happening. Compiz needs to default to off until this is fixed. Affected systems are probably any with the low-end Radeon RV250 chipset (== Mobility 9000) or less. It would probably be safest to include systems with Mobility 9200 chipsets as well. This needs to happen now! There's no need for compiz on these systems anyway - graphics are wonderfully fast with it turned off - finally on the order of Windows XP fast. We can turn an absolutely critical bug into a great enhancement for these older laptops. What does it take to get this done? ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) = Bryce Harrington (bryceharrington) -- [RV250] thinkpad t40 with ati radeon rv 250 (M 9000) freezes https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/374780 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 374780] Re: [RV250] thinkpad t40 with ati radeon rv 250 (M 9000) freezes
I have an IBM Thinkpad T41 with an ATI Radeon Mobility 9000 (rv 250). I can't say I've noticed this problem in Ubuntu 9.04, but I just tried booting from the 9.10 alpha5 karmic livecd (off a USB stick), and the system always locks up within a minute or so of booting. I noticed a little bit of video corruption in a couple of spots on the screen. I don't even have enough time to run dmesg. I just tried looking on the usb stick, and even though user settings should be getting saved to it, I don't see any copy of Xorg*.log anywhere. Or for that matter, any normal looking linux filesystem. It's possible this lockup is due to my hard drive setup: I have a grey market ultrabay adapter which converts SATA signals to IDE. I have a SATA drive in there, plus I also have a normal IDE drive in the normal drive slot. That said, in the first 30 sec after booting from the usb stick, I've noticed that gnome seems much more responsive than before, even with compiz enabled (which is the default).
