there is plenty of similar reports around and forums discussions about
that.

Why not post them here?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 562005] Re: Backlight controls of laptops with NVIDIA NVS and Quadro FX 880M GPUs no longer function while using proprietary drivers

2015-06-26 Thread Martin Spacek
What version is no longer supported? Really? We need to open up a new
bug report for a bug that's 5 years old and counting? This has never
been fixed, and likely never will be by nvidia. I'm currently on the
last supported version, 340.76, in Xubuntu 14.04. Still doesn't work.
But we *should* keep a bug report open on this, at least as a monument
to nvidia's apathy.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 562005] Re: Backlight controls of laptops with NVIDIA NVS and Quadro FX 880M GPUs no longer function while using proprietary drivers

2014-06-30 Thread Martin Spacek
For my future reference, and possibly others:

After installing Xubuntu 14.04 on my Thinkpad W510, generating
/etc/X11/xorg.conf with nvidia-settings and adding the
EnableBrightnessControl line to the Devices section and rebooting did
not work (it worked in Xubuntu 12.10). Instead, I had to create a
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-nvidia-brightness.conf file and add the
Devices section to that. It's described in this blog post:

http://blog.pearce.org.nz/2012/08/enabling-external-monitor-on-
lenovo.html

You should probably change the BoardName to whatever it is for your
system (mine is Quadro FX 880M).

Ingo Gerth, is this a new problem that occurs only in the more recent

two crashes:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 562005] Re: Backlight controls of laptops with NVIDIA NVS and Quadro FX 880M GPUs no longer function while using proprietary drivers

2013-04-17 Thread Martin Spacek
Xubuntu 12.10 updated to nvidia 304.88 a day or so ago, and now
brightness controls are even more uneven than before. I've tried
regenerating xorg.conf using nvidia-settings, and re-adding [Option
RegistryDwords EnableBrightnessControl=1] to the Device section, but
that hasn't helped. I also tried nvidia 313.30 from xorg-edgers, but
brightness controls seemed to be just as uneven.

3 years and this still hasn't been fixed. I'm waiting hopefully for
nouveau to finally implement proper power management implemented, so I
can ditch this nvidia crap for good. Linus perfectly expressed my
frustration with this company with his simple gesture:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 562005] Re: Backlight controls of laptops with NVIDIA NVS and Quadro FX 880M GPUs no longer function while using proprietary drivers

2012-10-31 Thread Martin Spacek
I just tried installing 304.60 from
https://launchpad.net/~noobslab/+archive/nvidia-quantal on my fresh
install of Xubuntu 12.10 amd64 with no xorg.conf. Brightness controls
did *not* work, as usual, so I'd say it isn't fixed.

Note that the packages at that PPA are labelled as
304.60-0ubuntu1~precise~xup2, so maybe they're not ideal for quantal,
but they do seem to work. I couldn't find any other PPA with quantal
packages for 304.60. At least not yet.

The latest certified nvidia blob (304.60) mentions this:

Added support for the Backlight RandR output property for configuring
the brightness of some notebook internal panels.

http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-display-amd64-304.60-driver.html

Could it be this is finally the fix we've been waiting for? Anyone tried
this latest version yet? I just installed Xubuntu 12.10 and with nvidia
304.51 I still need to add EnableBrightnessControl=1 to xorg.conf, and
the brightness increments on my Thinkpad W510 are large and uneven, as
always.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 562005] Re: Backlight controls of laptops with NVIDIA NVS and Quadro FX 880M GPUs no longer function while using proprietary drivers

2011-08-02 Thread Martin Spacek
Unsurprisingly, this problem remains in the latest ubuntu-x-swat nvidia
driver, 280.13. There seems to be some kind of a fairly recent problem
with nvidia backlight controls in the mactel community, with a few bugs
filed (like #764195).

A comment mentioned some success adding the mactel PPA (ppa:mactel-
support/ppa) and installing nvidia-bl-dkms:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-
drivers/+bug/764195/comments/11

Thought it might be worth a shot, so I tried this on my Thinkpad W510
with Quadro FX 880M (based on GT 330M apparently), but backlight
behaviour didn't change with the nvidia blob, even after reboot.

Dieter, no, this bug has nothing to do with suspend, and only pertains
to laptops with the newish nvidia NVS and Quadro FX 880M GPUs.

My nvidia blob just updated itself to 260.19.29 from the x-swat PPA.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 656279] Re: NVRM: os_raise_smp_barrier(), invalid context!

2010-12-09 Thread Martin Spacek
I have a Thinkpad W510 with nvidia driver 260.19.26 from xswat, running
in amd64 maverick, stock 2.6.35-23 kernel. Whenever I resumed from
suspend, I mostly noticed the graphics slowdown while (smooth) scrolling
a PDF in evince. A reboot restored graphics performance. After reading
this, as well as seemingly duplicate bug #671932, I went and disabled
hyperthreading in the BIOS. Voila, no more slowdowns after resume!
Haven't tried the 2.6.36 kernel yet (not too sure how) to confirm
Claudio Melis's comment that disabling hyperthreading is no longer
needed with that kernel.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 557224] Re: resume broken on ATI radeon RV250

2010-11-24 Thread Martin Spacek
I have the same problem on my Thinkpad T41 with RV250 on Maverick. This
system has been upgraded twice from 9.10.

$ lspci | egrep -i rv
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon RV250 [Mobility
FireGL 9000] (rev 02)

Although hibernate/resume works fine, suspend/resume does not. Plus,
there's some video corruption of the ubuntu logo during bootup and
shutdown. So, I thought I'd try turning off kernel mode setting (KMS).
I'm running grub2. In /etc/default/grub, I replaced this line:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash

with this line:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash nomodeset

Now, resuming from suspend seems to work perfectly. I'm not sure whether
there's a performance hit by not using KMS. Is nomodeset the default
when installing Maverick on older AGP radeon systems like these? Should
it be in Natty? Will suspend/resume under KMS ever work on older AGP
radeon systems?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 568382] Re: Lucid Kubuntu: garbled splash screen and random failures to start X

2010-08-10 Thread Martin Spacek
I'm getting this as well on my Lenovo Thinkpad W510 with an Nvidia
Quadro FX 880M, and it's very random. Doesn't seem to matter if it's a
cold boot. The odds seem to be about 50/50 of booting up normally, or
booting up to the X dialog in low-graphics mode. When I choose restart X
in the X dialog, I get the gnome login screen at low-res. From there I
reboot and hope for the best. My Xorg.conf is a generic one generated by
the nvidia config applet (which reports nvidia driver version
195.36.24). I think this started happening to me in late June, so
probably due to some update around then. I'm up to date on all packages.

I don't know why I have both a computer_backlight and a

Right now I can only control brightness by switching to a TTY. i get 16
different levels there, and the up and down increments are the same. I
don't currently have the EnableBrightControl option set in my
xorg.conf.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 544869] Re: Suspend fails to resume on Dell 8600 / ATI video

2010-03-26 Thread Martin Spacek
After a bit more testing, I've noticed some further subtleties. When I
get a black screen (as opposed to the weird marbled one that gets
brighter and brighter) on resume from suspend, I do in fact get a mouse
cursor. What's more, the mouse switches to a text insertion I bar when
I hover it over the spot where the password entry box should be
displayed. Also, it doesn't seem the CPU is being loaded - no hot air
blowing out. Finally, with the black screen I can switch to another TTY.
None of this is possible when I get the weird marbled screen.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 544869] Re: Suspend fails to resume on Dell 8600 / ATI video

2010-03-26 Thread Martin Spacek
Tormod, I just tried the /daily/current snapshot (2.6.34 from
2010-03-25), and I can't seem to boot with it. Not even in recovery
mode. I get a screen of log messages that stop at about 0.4 seconds at
kernel_thread_helper or ? uart_send_xchar or ?
uart_register_driver, and then I have to do a hard reset. Same goes for
the next most recent snapshot (2.6.34. from 2010-03-15). Maybe I'm doing
something wrong.

I also just did a big update (~100MB), which included some plymouth
stuff. Now I get a plymouth error on bootup with the normal 2.6.32-17
kernel. I've also noticed that sometimes when I get the black screen on
resume, I might not get the mouse cursor or the ability to switch TTYs.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 510004] Re: [lucid regression] random graphics effects after resume from suspend to RAM

2010-03-24 Thread Martin Spacek
I have what sounds like a similar problem on my Thinkpad T41, which has
an ATI RV250 GPU. This is 32 bit Lucid, upgraded from Karmic.
Suspend/resume worked fine in Karmic. I'm using the default open-source
ATI drivers. This is a really old GPU by the way.

Hibernate/resume works fine in Lucid. Suspend seems to work fine, both
when closing the lid, and clicking the Sleep icon. When I resume, either
by opening the lid or pressing the power button, everything seems to
come back up, but initially the screen is blank, though I can tell the
backlight is on. Then, over the course of a few seconds, a strange
marble-like pattern starts to emerge on the screen, and it gets
progressively brighter and brighter over the course of a few minutes,
until the whole screen is full white. There's no mouse cursor visible. I
can't seem to switch to another TTY. If I remember correctly, the fan
speed stays pretty high, so the cpu might be under some load. I think
the wireless indicator turns on. There's the normal occasional hard
drive activity, and I'm pretty sure one time I punched in my password,
and by dead reckoning managed to click the system menu, and then the
switch off item, and got the system to shut down normally. Otherwise,
I have no choice but to do a hard power off.

Seeing as I don't have an nvidia gpu, should I open a new bug, or can
someone point me to an existing bug?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 544869] Re: Suspend fails to resume on Dell 8600 / ATI video

2010-03-24 Thread Martin Spacek
I'm having the same problem on my Thinkpad T41 with Radeon Mobility 9000
(RV250) GPU. This is a problem that showed up in lucid, but wasn't
present in karmic. Resume seems to work, backlight turns on right away
(I can even control the backlight level), but I either get:

1) A black screen
2) A screen that starts out mostly dark, but then a sort of marbled pattern
emerges on screen that gets progressively brighter over a minute or two, until
the whole screen is basically white. Very strange.

There's no mouse cursor visible. From the fan and the heat, I think the
CPU is at 100%. I can't switch to another TTY using ctrl-alt-F1 or any
other F key. I have to do a hard shutdown. Once or twice I managed to
shut down normally using dead reckoning with the mouse, or by simply
pressing the power button for a short while (this presumably brought up
the shut down dialog box), and then hitting enter.

Sometimes when I reboot after a hard shutdown, the network manager
starts up with networking disabled for some reason, and I have to
manually re-enable it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 374780] Re: [RV250] thinkpad t40 with ati radeon rv 250 (M 9000) freezes

2009-10-22 Thread Martin Spacek
I just did a full update of my karmic installation on my Thinkpad T41.
Turning on compiz *still* causes screen corruption, with full system
lockup soon after. I also just tried booting from the karmic release
candidate live cd (off of USB), which still defaults to having compiz
turned on. Again, I get screen corruption, followed by a full system
lockup soon after. This is embarrassing. We're 7 days aways from the
final release, and this is still happening.

Compiz needs to default to off until this is fixed. Affected systems are
probably any with the low-end Radeon RV250 chipset (== Mobility 9000) or
less. It would probably be safest to include systems with Mobility 9200
chipsets as well. This needs to happen now!

There's no need for compiz on these systems anyway - graphics are
wonderfully fast with it turned off - finally on the order of Windows XP
fast. We can turn an absolutely critical bug into a great enhancement
for these older laptops. What does it take to get this done?

completely stable, and any screen corruption disappears. This means that
I can post results from Xorg.0.log and 'dmesg'. Hopefully those will be
relevant to the problem even with compiz disabled. I'll try and post
them later today.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 374780] Re: [RV250] thinkpad t40 with ati radeon rv 250 (M 9000) freezes

2009-09-25 Thread Martin Spacek
Here are Xorg.0.log and dmesg after booting into karmic alpha6 off the
livecd (on a USB stick) and immediately disabling compiz. The system
hard locks within a minute if compiz is left enabled. After disabling
it, if I then go to re-enable it, the system hard locks almost
immediately.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 374780] Re: [RV250] thinkpad t40 with ati radeon rv 250 (M 9000) freezes

2009-09-05 Thread Martin Spacek
I have an IBM Thinkpad T41 with an ATI Radeon Mobility 9000 (rv 250). I
can't say I've noticed this problem in Ubuntu 9.04, but I just tried
booting from the 9.10 alpha5 karmic livecd (off a USB stick), and the
system always locks up within a minute or so of booting. I noticed a
little bit of video corruption in a couple of spots on the screen. I
don't even have enough time to run dmesg. I just tried looking on the
usb stick, and even though user settings should be getting saved to it,
I don't see any copy of Xorg*.log anywhere. Or for that matter, any
normal looking linux filesystem.

It's possible this lockup is due to my hard drive setup: I have a grey
market ultrabay adapter which converts SATA signals to IDE. I have a
SATA drive in there, plus I also have a normal IDE drive in the normal
drive slot.

That said, in the first 30 sec after booting from the usb stick, I've
noticed that gnome seems much more responsive than before, even with
compiz enabled (which is the default). This is very exciting! Keep up
the good work!

By the way, my 14 LCD is 1400x1050. The extra resolution has caused
issues in the past, at least with compiz.
