Similar/same issue observed on HP Spectre 13 (2017 model) which has
exactly the same Intel HD 520 graphics. Bad enough that I had to
reinstall 17.10.

The other option for people on Quantal is to upgrade to Raring. There's
still no fglrx, but the open source radeon driver has improved a *lot*.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1058040] Re: fglrx-installer not working with AMD Radeon/Mobility Radeon HD 2000-4000 cards in Quantal

2012-11-07 Thread Max Bowsher
My FirePro V5700 ceased to work with the fglrx driver with the exact
same update, in the exact same way, as described here, and has the same
underlying chip as Radeon HDs known to be affected.

The AMD website is hardly a shining example of consistency - there's an
8.982 Linux driver offered for the FirePro V5700 at
http://support.amd.com/us/Pages/AMDSupportHub.aspx if you select
Workstation Graphics and FirePro Performance Pre-WHQL Driver.

The weight of evidence is certainly sufficient to convince me that it's
all one issue. If AMD ever come up with a driver that supports the
Radeon HD [234]xxx on X server 1.13 but does not support my FirePro,
I'll reconsider.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1058040] Re: fglrx-installer not working with AMD Radeon/Mobility Radeon HD 2000-4000 cards in Quantal

2012-11-07 Thread Max Bowsher
lspci has this to say about it:
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RV730
[FirePro V5700]

The balance of evidence regarding the FirePro V5700 seems to be support
was dropped in 8.982, and the AMD website is just getting it wrong when
it offers 8.982.x for the FirePro V5700 in some combinations of clicking
through the driver selector forms.

The balance of evidence regarding the FireStream cards seems confused.
The PDF release notes linked from individual driver versions at
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/fire/previous/Pages/fire_linux.aspx
suggest support dropped, whilst
http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/AMDCatalystSoftwareSuiteVersion1211BetaReleaseNotes.aspx
is contradictory to this, suggesting support continues.

2012-11-06 Thread Max Bowsher

  http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/legacy/Pages/legacy-

+ NOTE: It is mostly agreed that all AMD cards based on R(V)6x0 and R(V)7x0
chips are affected - if your board's chip is a member of these families, you
should consider this bug report to most likely apply to you. This includes some
FirePro/FireGL/FireStream products as well as certain Radeon HD5x00 mobility
parts which are rebadged Radeon HD4x00 parts. If unsure, please consult

However there seems to be some question surrounding some FireStream parts
containing R7xx chips, which may still be supported by the main Catalyst driver

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1058040] Re: fglrx-installer not working with HD2000-4000 legacy cards in Quantal

2012-11-06 Thread Max Bowsher
@ Christopher Penalver:

Why are you so very determined to make this bug's description LESS
useful for users?

I have a FirePro V5700 [RV730] which is affected by this. The
nomenclature HD2000-4000 doesn't identify this card at all. The chip
information is vastly more useful in identifying whether a given card is
likely to be affected, yet you insist on deleting it even after I
expanded the wording to document the interesting ambiguity of the
FireStreams.

I'll put my revised wording in my comment here, since you deleted it
from the description:

--
NOTE: It is mostly agreed that all AMD cards based on R(V)6x0 and R(V)7x0 chips
are affected - if your board's chip is a member of these families, you should

As for your reluctance to refer to Wikipedia: if AMD actually provided
an official source thsat would be great. Since they don't bother,
Wikipedia is a good second best.

2012-10-16 Thread Max Bowsher
I have added an ubuntu-release-notes bugtask to this bug, because I
think it is appropriate to release-note a warning to users of older ATI
hardware that due to AMD/ATI's failure to continue to support their
hardware, they will not have the option of using fglrx after updating to
Quantal.

three edges, but not along the bottom edge.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 384316] Re: radeon driver now depends on ati to be autoloaded, previously it did not

2009-08-18 Thread Max Bowsher
The use case is a desire to uninstall the old -r128 and -mach64 drivers
because they are not used on my system. This removes the -ati driver too
by dependencies.

So yes, it's a situation that would be encountered only when a user was
exercising some fairly fine-grained package selection. But, it did work
fine in the past.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 405943] Re: [regression] rapid pointer movements with touchpad ignored

2009-08-13 Thread Max Bowsher
Whilst running synaptics-report, there was a shell error message. The line:
if [ $MAJOR -ge 1 ] [ $MINOR -ge 4 ]; then
is inadequately quoted. As the line:
# NOTE: this won't work outside of X
indicates, this part won't work outside of X, in which case $MAJOR and $MINOR
will be empty strings. You should defensively quote them. ( [ $MAJOR -ge
..)

Also, the logic of the version test is wrong: Should be ( major 1 || (
major == 1  minor = 4 ) ), not ( major = 1   minor = 4 ).

Now, on to the actual attachment

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 384316] [NEW] radeon driver now depends on ati to be autoloaded, previously it did not

2009-06-06 Thread Max Bowsher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

Prior to 1:6.12.2-2ubuntu1, I had only xserver-xorg-video-radeon
installed, *without* xserver-xorg-video-ati. This used to work fine. As
of that version, X now fails to load the driver unless the -ati wrapper
is present. This is probably related to pci ids no longer being shipped
in the -radeon package. Either X should learn the necessary pci ids to
load radeon directly, or the radeon package should depend on ati if
that's necessary for it to ever be properly autoloaded.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 379203] Re: touchpad tap-to-click doesn't works after update to karmic from jaunty

2009-05-22 Thread Max Bowsher
This is almost certainly related to the following entry in xserver-xorg-
input-synaptics' debian/NEWS file:

xserver-xorg-input-synaptics (1.1.1~git20090510-1) unstable; urgency=low

  * Tapping has been disabled by default on many touchpads by upstream, see
the NOTES section in the synaptics(4) manpage for a short overview
about how defaults are calculated.
If you want to re-enable it, you can do so from within the X
environment by running the following commands in a terminal:

$ synclient TapButton1=1
$ synclient TapButton2=2
$ synclient TapButton3=3

Note that the configuration will not be permanently modified, to do
so assign the above option values in your xorg.conf or custom fdi file
(see the synaptics(4) manpage or the documents in
/usr/share/doc/xserver-xorg-input-synaptics for additional details).
Another alternative is to use desktop environment specific tools
like gpointing-device-settings or touchfreeze.
