I think the problem is with Unity, not X, since some parts of desktop works and I can switch to text terminals (alt + f1). Apparently all applications/windows can be closed from close button if in maximized more. I have also this same problem and I can fully agree with post #14. I also installed installed maximus, go-home-applet and window-picker applet and netbook-launcher-efl (didn't find netbook-remix-efl, not even sure what it does, maybe those are the same?) and 2D netbook interface looks and works quite well (stupid large icons).
