[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1713313] Re: Unable to launch pkexec'ed applications on Wayland session

2018-08-06 Thread PeterPall
This isn't a bug but a major feature of wayland: If you have root rights
you no more get access to the graphical user interface which makes it
harder for a gui application to spy on another application's keyboard
input. The backdraw of this is that every application that needs root
rights for its work has to be re-written to have 2 parts:

 - the actual gui application and
 - a small helper that gets root access using pkgkit

The second advantage of this security measure is that now no more the
whole application that might suffer from security flaws has root access,
but only the part that really needs root rights.

td;lr: The fact that gui applications no more run when given root rights
won't change. It is the applications that have to adapt.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1573959] Re: On-screen text disappears after suspend

2016-12-14 Thread PeterPall
That would be how fixing bugs for ubuntu is supposed to work:

 - you find a way to reproduce the bug
 - Even if you only know that the bug was fixed within the last 256 commits to
the kernel's git repository git bisect will let you test only 8 versions of the
source code - and after you testing them it is already able to tell which
commit was the right one
 - git format-patch generates a patch
 - you forward the patch to the packager
 - and all is set.

The only thing missing until now is the 1st step: Finding a way to
reliably reproduce the bug.

The issue was still present in linux-4.4.0 - but today (after switching to the
first beta of 4.5.0) it did no more happen.
If we are really lucky this means the issue is resolved in that version of the
kernel. Will comment this bug again once I have more experience with this
kernel version.

My laptop worked out of the box with ubuntu, which I actually expected so I
didn't even bother to look in the internet if it does before buying it.
There is one thing that is half-broken, though: If I close the computer it
goes into suspend mode. If I open it again it resumes. But like with all other
laptops I could test on after booting the computer's touchpad has tapping and
two-finger-scroll enabled. After the first resume you can click only using the
physical key even if the touchpad works fine otherwise.

Turning off and re-enabling the scrolling functionality in gnome-
control-panel doesn't make scrolling work again.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1389434] Re: Tapping doesn't work after resume

2014-12-21 Thread PeterPall
This means the problem could be a syndaemon that forgets to re-enable
tapping? Will disable syndaemon and if that fixes the problem re-assign
the bug to this program, then.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1389434] [NEW] Tapping doesn't work after resume

2014-11-04 Thread PeterPall
Public bug reported:

My laptop worked out of the box with ubuntu, which I actually expected so I
didn't even bother to look in the internet if it does before buying it.
There is one thing that is half-broken, though: If I close the computer it goes
into suspend mode.

ProblemType: Bug
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 15.04
Package: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics 1.8.1-1ubuntu1

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1388738] Re: No cursor while compositing

2014-11-03 Thread PeterPall
Thanks a lot!

Since the last bug that was similar was caused by gsettings-daemon was somehow
lost how it is supposed to tell xserver-xorg it wants to be informed reliably
when the mouse pointer moves I honestly don't know if I assigned it to the
right package: I think it was fixed on gsettings-daemon's side.
... and the credits for the workaround doesn't go to me: Found the solution at
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/24970776/the-mouse-works-fine-but-it-does-not-display-in-ubuntu-14-04-arm-beagleboard-xm
after googling for about an hour without using the mouse.

Kind regards,

Gunter.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1305494] [NEW] noticeable touchpad lag that feels like a low-pass for movements

2014-04-10 Thread PeterPall
Public bug reported:

The touchpad on my new laptop works fine (with multitouch and all) but when I
stop moving my finger the mouse pointer still moves for a quarter of a second
or similar as if a low-pass would filter the movements. Unfortunately this
delay makes it hard not to miss a button at the first try and having to come
back because stopping exactly a quarter of a second before the pointer hits the
button - involves complex timing; When clicking or tapping on the buttons I
don't get any noticable delay.

I know that when using the OS from M$ you can activate a low-pass filter for
movements that is called trägheitsbewegung in the german version of that OS.

Is there a way to do the same on Ubuntu?

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1024750] Re: Calibre crashes the window manager on start-up

2012-07-19 Thread PeterPall
Hope the collection of data about the bug worked.
In the meantime I got the old error message again:

Window manages warning: Window 0x4200013 (calibre - ) sets an MWM hint
indicating it isn't resizable, but sets min size 16383 x 16383 and max
size 2147483647 x 2147483647; this doesn't make much sense.

A window this big that doesn't fit in the graphic's card's memory seems
to be a plausible reason for a crash.

Still it seems like the whole X server isn't always crashed:
Going to a console, killing the window manager, killing calibre (this
step is important, otherwise the window manager will immediately crash
again on re-launch - setting the DISPLAY variable to :0.0 and starting
the window manager again usually renders the system usable again.

Kind regards,

  Gunter.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 550625] Re: Alps touchpad is recognized but synaptics clients and scrolling do not work

2011-10-01 Thread PeterPall
Did try the dkms module on Oneiric Ozelot and an HP Mini 311. Is the
first time I am actually able to type two sentences in a row without the
cursor jumping somwhere I don't want it to and without a chance to argue
with the machine that I didn't even get near to the touchpad all this
time.

Great work!

...Did encounter a (solvable) problem, though. don't know if it is my fault:
After installing the package and rebooting my computer seemed to still use the
shipped psmouse.ko. So I did a
sudo depmod -a
sudo update-initramfs -u
since I thought the initramfs could still hold the old module.

Didn't do any good, that. Renaming psmouse.ko to psmouse2.ko and adding a
rmmod psmouse
modprobe psmouse2
to /etc/rc.local did help.

Don't know what went wrong. But as I said: Might be entirely my fault.

something: The last time I looked at my dmesg my touchpad was recognized

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 810653] Re: Gestures won't work on HP/Compaq mini 311 touchpad

2011-07-26 Thread PeterPall
tuxinvader seems to has found the reason for this problem (see Bug
#527890). Seems to be a kernel bug after all; Will copy the relevant
part of the text here and then try to find out how to reassign this bug
to the kernel:

Hi all,

I was asked to be help some one get vertical scroll working on their HP,
so I've just blown the dust of mine and installed Natty. Vertical Scroll
still broken by default :-(

The problem with scrolling is Ubuntu specific. Kernel.org kernels should
just work.

Ubuntu patches add support for a Dell Precision 4500. There is a lot of
additional code in there for making the Dell work, but it uses a similar
touchpad to the HP (same vendor/product IDs) and that is what breaks
vertical scrolling on the HP.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 810653] Re: Gestures won't work on HP/Compaq mini 311 touchpad

2011-07-24 Thread PeterPall
** Description changed:

- Gestures alone wouldn't be this big a problem. But syndaemon won't work
- either making typing a consistent piece of text harder than it should
- be; There already has been a bug report for this issue (Bug #527890) but
- it has been closed since it was filed against a series that is no more
- supported.
+ The touchpad of the HP Mini 311 seems to be recognized as a touchpad. It
partially seems to work, too: I can move the mouse pointer and if I tap on the
touchpad this is recognized as a click. This feature tends to be rather
hysterical, though, so for a few weeks now I am trying to tell the touchpad to
disable tap-on-click while typing. All tools that could help there I am aware
of (syndaemon, gnome-mouse-properties, syncmd) seem to know that my touchpad is
a touchpad and offer me to change configuration parameters. syncmd even shows
the altered value for the parameters afterwards if I try to read them back.
+ The problem now is that no matter what I am doing my tries to change the
sensitivity, gesture, tapping, scroll or any other part of the touchpad's
behavior seem to be completely ignored by the touchpad itself: It always stays
in the default mode (No two-finger-scroll, no edge or circular scroll, default
sensitivity and click-on-tap is enabled).
+ There already has been a bug report for this issue (Bug #527890) but it is
now closed since it was filed against a series of Ubuntu that is no more
supported.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 551108] Re: can't find framebuffer in initramfs (cryptsetup) with nouveau driver

2011-06-15 Thread PeterPall
I think I found out where the blacklist of the nouveau driver comes
from: On my system it was installed by the proprietary nvidia driver and
hasn't been uninstalled on the removal of this driver again when
switching to the open-source one.
