[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1493888] Re: FGLRX incompatible with gcc 5

2015-11-17 Thread QIII
AMD's fglrx does not support the HD 4200 in that version of Ubuntu. The
last Ubuntu release supported by the AMD proprietary driver was 12.04.1.

Adapters prior to the HD 5000 series are not supported. This bug is not
related to your issue.

Did you follow the instructions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for enabling selective
installation and then install all packages explicitly from there?

That is: fglrx-updates/wily-proposed, fglrx-amdcccle-updates/wily-
proposed, fglrx-core-updates/wily-proposed?

Ease follow the instructions in the link I provided to enable selective

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1493888] Re: FGLRX incompatible with gcc 5

2015-10-30 Thread QIII
For those with dual graphics: Although it is not supposed to be
required any longer, I answer this question often enough on the Ubuntu
Forums that I recommend the following:

If you have fglrx installed and end up with a blank/black screen, go
into recovery mode, mount your filesystem read/write. Issue the
following command:

amdconfig --adapter=all --initial

and reboot.

If you have uninstalled it, reinstall it. Before rebooting, issue the
amdconfig command.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1493888] Re: FGLRX incompatible with kernel 4.2

2015-10-24 Thread QIII
Alberto --

This is the second time I have been involved in a major disaster
affecting the fglrx driver. It took quite some time to fix the one
that I reported a few months ago.

I asked that that bug be raised to "critical" as it affected an entire
class of users.

I understand that the heat is not high on this because of the low number
of users indicating they are affected, but I think it is clear that this
is a big problem.

This time, would you get with your colleagues and get this one raised to
critical?

Unless Canonical is interested in alienating all AMD graphics users,
this needs to be fixed yesterday.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1479913] Re: SRU request: fglrx.ko fails because of backported GPL-only 'pci_ignore_hotplug' symbol

2015-08-21 Thread QIII
The thanks are to the individuals handling the bug and arriving at a
solution. Alberto Milone, for instance, has been in on a couple of bugs
I've reported/followed.

Bugs happen. It's a fact of life. They get reported and they get fixed
(hopefully).

From a systemic viewpoint, however, this case is an especially troubling
problem. The issue was identified in -proposed and not resolved.
Despite that, the offeding package(s) was promoted to main. For that
there is no excuse.

But that is a systemic issue for Canonical to address at a higher level.
The folks here who responded to fix the issue do deserve credit for
their work.

Dmitry --

Unfortunately, your GPU is no longer supported by AMD with a driver that
will work with the current version of X server. There is nothing anyone
at Canonical or any other Linux distributor can do. That is really not
related to this particular bug. Since you have already removed the
fglrx driver, you can keep using the open source driver.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed

Make sure to read the part about pinning in the section Selective
upgrading from -proposed and pin the repo so you don't get a bunch of
other updates you don't want.

Then issue the following in the command line:

sudo apt-get install fglrx-updates/trusty-proposed

Alberto -

Might I suggest that this be raised from High to Critical?

The Hardware Enablement Stack should have enabled rather than disabled
to the point where the point releases are impossible to use for an
entire class of users.

2015-03-10 Thread QIII
14.04.1, 12.04.4, 14.10 and 15.04 (development) all work. You could use
14.04(.2) or 12.04(.5) until this is sorted out and then upgrade.

Just don't install the Hardware Enablement Stack for now.

It's not skin off of anyone's nose if you decide to go back to Windows.

That would be a different bug and should be reported separately. This
one is specifically about installing the fglrx driver (the proprietary

Hey, folks. The bug is about the two releases referenced and fglrx-

2015-02-24 Thread QIII
For clarity:

I attempted the following on my test machine:

1. Upgrade from 14.04.1 with the driver installed. I always recommend
against this, but I attempted it anyway in the interest of testing.

2. From a fresh installation of 14.01.1, install the driver, remove the
driver, upgrade and then re-install the driver.

3. Install 14.04.2 fresh, update and then install the driver.

All methods failed similarly.

@ blue print

Your question on reinstalling would probably best be handled on
ubuntuforums.

In your post, make a reference to this bug report and specifically to
your post #95.

If I have a chance, I'll look for you post there and lend a hand. If I
don't, there are a lot of other people who would be happy to help.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 642518] Re: [MASTER] package fglrx 2:8.723.1-0ubuntu4 failed to install/upgrade: Kernel fix for CVE-2010-3081 breaks fglrx

2010-09-22 Thread QIII
Fortunately, I keep my ear to the ground and was aware of this problem
before I updated. I would have been able to dig myself out of it, but
it would certainly have raised by blood pressure.

Since the fix was made available in -updates, this worked for me:

Completely uninstall Catalyst 10.9.

Reinstall Catalyst 10.4 from the repo.

Perform updates.

Restart.

I am not going to move forward with installing the later Catalyst
versions at this point.

But I must say something, and I hope the developers and MOTUs will take
this as constructive criticism. I understand that you all work very
hard, and I appreciate that. I admire you.

Lucid is an LTS. People expect it to be stable. They do not expect
that some strange-sounding thing like compat_alloc_user_space, which
they don't know from a hole in the ground, should change suddenly,
causing them to have difficulty with their video driver.
Understandably, this is difficult with driver versions later than the
ones in the repos, but changes should work at least with what is in the
repos. The driver affected, per the original bug report, is the one
that is in the Lucid repo. CVE-2010-3081 is a critical bug fix that
plugs a hole that can allow a nefarious outside user to root an
exploited machine. The likelihood that someone's personal machine would
be attacked is small, but it is real. This whole thing would have gone
right past a headless server without notice.

A critical update to the kernel was needed and provided. Unwitting
users, perhaps with little tech know-how, diligently updated their
machines and broke their ATI drivers because there was a change in other
files that kept the driver from being compiled against the kernel
correctly. They were left with machines that would not operate as
expected. They were first offered a patch, which many might not have
understood how to apply. Finally some 24 - 36 hours later, they were
given an update that works with the driver in the repo. Their ability
to use it depends somewhat on whether they are able to get themselves
out of whatever mire they may have gotten themselves into in the
meantime.

Sorry, guys, but this smells very strongly of failure coordinate effort
and conduct appropriate testing.

I've been doing the computer gig for 35 years. This is just not the
sort of thing I find acceptable.

No problem this time. It installed just like I thought it should, as
has been the case with the AMD/ATI prereleases in the past.

Gremlins, I guess.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 545762] [NEW] Installation of fglrx-amdcccle 2:8.721-0ubuntu5 crashes video

2010-03-24 Thread QIII
Public bug reported:

Release: Lucid Lynx
Package: fglrx-amdcccle 2:8.721-0ubuntu5
Expected behavior: Installation expected to drive video properly
Actual behavior: After installation, system allowed me to select user and
enter password. Immediately thereafter, however, the screen went blank. It
was not simply a blank screen Xserver issue. The monitors actually lost
signal and stopped.
Remediation: Reboot, drop to root with networking, remove fglrx and
fglrx-amdcccle, reboot.

Unfortunately, I had not previously changed the logging flag in bootlogd
to yes to capture the boot messages, so I can't be of help there.

I will see what other logging I can dig up to help with the process of
debugging.

Killing an X session is one thing. Killing output from the card to the
monitors is probably not good on the hardware.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 545762] Re: Installation of fglrx-amdcccle 2:8.721-0ubuntu5 crashes video

2010-03-24 Thread QIII
By the way, it was late last night. I don't want to impugn the
developers or the responsible MOTU.

I suspect this goes back to the fact that the AMD/ATI driver is a pre-
release.

So this may have to go back to AMD/ATI.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 387720] Re: nVidia GeForce2 MX 400 video driver fails in karmic

2010-03-13 Thread QIII
[ 15.612398] nvidia: module license 'NVIDIA' taints kernel.
[ 15.612408] Disabling lock debugging due to kernel taint

The nVidia module is not being inserted into the kernel at boot time.

Also nVidia lists the card as legacy. They are making no more updates
to the driver. Xorg has moved on. It is not likely, as with older
AMD/ATI legacy cards, that this card will work with current and future
versions of Xorg, since it is doubtful that Xorg will spend much effort
in trying to provide backwards compatibility with every possible legacy
card every OEM has ever manufactured.

I have some old Matrox cards in the garage. My guess is that they would
not work.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 387720] Re: nVidia GeForce2 MX 400 video driver fails in karmic

2010-03-10 Thread QIII
Sorry folks. I hadn't checked in on this in some time.

I believe the issue has turned out to be that the said GPU is in
nVidia's legacy pile and is no longer supported.

This was a very old test machine which I no longer use.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 372345] Re: Compiz memory leak / Xorg memory leak

2009-05-20 Thread QIII
If anyone is still interested.

I was going to CP the link, but didn't get the C part, apparently.

www.x.org's bug site directed me to bugzilla.

Apparently this is a regression from an earlier version of Xorg.

The bug was reopened very recently with

Priority: High
Severity: Major

It's not Jaunty or Compiz related. It's a bug in the latest Xorg.
