I see this problem in two different computers. Like Sam Ennuie says I think this is a timing problem, In my case the problem presents during the first login after pc power on (the login process is a little longer at this time) if I logout and login again the theme works just fine. I can confirm this problem. I was able to install ubuntu 10.04 but after install you can't start Xs. This is solvable disabling noveau from grub and uninstalling noveau in text mode. In ubuntu 10.10 is other history, you can't even run the installation and the only way I could install it was downloading the special text mode ubuntu iso.
