2012-10-03 Thread Sam Spilsbury
Hmm, nope. I've removed UnityMTGrabHandles::glDraw from the description
as we're just painting a regular old tfp texture from xcomposite. This
sounds like some kind of weird problem in the driver.

Can the reporters run nvidia-bug-report.sh ? It should be in your PATH
by default.

Yes, that will work, however we'll need to be careful about not leaking
in the decorator in that case. That will probably involve compiz
creating a session window as well for the decorator, which isn't a
difficult task

I looked into this some time ago. The decorations are updating just fine,
but the damage events aren't generated for pixmap-only backed drawables on
fglrx.

Maybe things have changed since then :)

 Bug description:
  Binary package hint: unity

  I previously reported this as
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/768860. Further
investigation on my part suggests the issue is with unity-window-
  decorator.

The title bar is not updated on non-maximized windows unless the
decorator is forced to redraw the title bar--usually on losing focus.
I have confirmed this with GNOME-Terminal, GIMP, Firefox, and Geeqie.

  To reproduce:
GIMP: Open a file. Modify it. Unless you switched to the Toolbox window, the
image name doesn't get a prepended * to indicate the file has changed. Save
it with CTRL-S. The * will not disappear until the window loses focus.

Firefox: Open sites on multiple tabs. Switch between tabs as often as
you like. The title bar text will not change unless the window loses
focus. Maximize the Firefox window. Switch between tabs. The global
menu title bar text will now change with each tab.

GNOME-Terminal: Open a terminal. Change directories. Notice that the
directory shown in the title bar does not match what is reported by
  `pwd`.

Geeqie: Go to a directory with images. The title bar should change to
show the name of each image as its displayed. Now maximize the window.
The title bar text changes as each image is selected.

  For further testing, I chmod'ed /usr/bin/unity-window-decorator and
restarted compiz-decorator to force the use of gtk-window-decorator.
All title bars behaved normally (although I lost the rest of the unity
  interface).

Personally, I find this bug to be a show-stopper. I've been using the
Unity interface for a week and this is one of the two issues that
would keep me using the classic GNOME interface instead of Unity.

This may be a duplicate of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/768356 but I was unable to
append any comments to that bug. That report was also specific to
Firefox, which I think is a bit misleading since the issue affects all
applications which provide feedback via the title bar.

Its a bug that I've seen happen on and off on different drivers. It used
to be a problem on intel and nouveau but isn't anymore.

 Bug description:
  Binary package hint: unity

  I previously reported this as
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/768860. Further
investigation on my part suggests the issue is with unity-window-
  decorator.

The title bar is not updated on non-maximized windows unless the
decorator is forced to redraw the title bar--usually on losing focus.
I have confirmed this with GNOME-Terminal, GIMP, Firefox, and Geeqie.

  To reproduce:
GIMP: Open a file. Modify it. Unless you switched to the Toolbox window, the
image name doesn't get a prepended * to indicate the file has changed. Save
it with CTRL-S. The * will not disappear until the window loses focus.

Firefox: Open sites on multiple tabs. Switch between tabs as often as
you like. The title bar text will not change unless the window loses
focus. Maximize the Firefox window. Switch between tabs. The global
menu title bar text will now change with each tab.

GNOME-Terminal: Open a terminal. Change directories. Notice that the
directory shown in the title bar does not match what is reported by
  `pwd`.

Geeqie: Go to a directory with images. The title bar should change to
show the name of each image as its displayed. Now maximize the window.
The title bar text changes as each image is selected.

  For further testing, I chmod'ed /usr/bin/unity-window-decorator and
restarted compiz-decorator to force the use of gtk-window-decorator.
All title bars behaved normally (although I lost the rest of the unity
  interface).

Personally, I find this bug to be a show-stopper. I've been using the
Unity interface for a week and this is one of the two issues that
would keep me using the classic GNOME interface instead of Unity.

This may be a duplicate of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/768356 but I was unable to
append any comments to that bug. That report was also specific to
Firefox, which I think is a bit misleading since the issue affects all
applications which provide feedback via the title bar.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 830949] Re: [Intel N10 Graphics] Need Compiz' Copy to Texture plugin so can display on multi-head layouts bigger than the max GL texture size

2012-01-19 Thread Sam Spilsbury
1. Performance issues will not be hit, the plugin only kicks in when tfp
binding fails (eg, more than max texture sizE)
2. We need to fix the framebuffer object capture code to allow for multiple
texture bindings too.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 830949] Re: [Intel N10 Graphics] Need Compiz' Copy to Texture plugin so can display on multi-head layouts bigger than the max GL texture size

2012-01-19 Thread Sam Spilsbury
NB: While enabling the copy to texture plugin on the compiz side of
things will allow compiz to work correctly on its own, unity and nux do
not have code to handle splitting up textures and drawing them
individually, ensuring that they do not exceed GL_MAX_TEXTURE_SIZE .

This means that you'll be able to run compiz on its own, but it is
likely that drawing past any dimention which is larger than the maximum
texture size that unity does will fail. This means that full-screen
effects such as full-screen blur will not work correctly. There isn't
code in unity in place at the moment to disable such effects in this
case - please use CompizConfig Settings Manager to disable the Dash blur
before testing monitor add / remove.

That being said, all of unity's widgets are done per-monitor, and unless
the actual monitor dimentions are larger than GL_MAX_TEXTURE_SIZE
itself, then it isn't likely that this limit will be hit.

You can query the maximum texture size by doing

glxinfo -l | grep GL_MAX_TEXTURE_SIZE

Which will return a single value for how large the screen space can be
in any one direction. Any window that draws a desktop window shared over
both monitors (I believe nautilus does this) will request a backing
pixmap that large. Else - you can test this by resizing a window to be
so large that it exceeds that size (check the dimentions with xwininfo)

I have discovered a fairly consistent behavior: When multiple
aplications are open, the bug can manifest itself as: the active
window is blank (white in my case... title bar displays but nothing
else.) while windows behind it will display content. If one of the
unfocused windows is selected, it gains focus, and goes blank. The
previously blank window, no longer focused, regains its content and is
  no longer blank.

Switching between applications, the ones gaining focus always going
blank only to regain content after losing focus is quite infuriating.

To force an application to quit being blank, another application is
opened, and applications are switched until the blanking behavior
begins for the new application. (I use terminal as my dummy app...)
Terminal is given focus, observed to be blank, and closed. The
aplication which was behind the dummy application gains focus, and
does not go blank. (this has been verified in classic desktop, not yet
  in unity)

This bug has been found to affect users of fglrx (ATI/AMD) and Intel
graphics drivers. NVIDIA users should look to bug 92599 instead.

  TEST CASE:

Make sure Sync To VBlank is enabled in the OpenGL section of
CompizConfig Settings Manager. In Ubuntu 11.04 it is enabled by
  default.

fglrx: Drag some windows around. Also open and close windows. The
animations will not be smooth as they appear to stutter. The framerate
  is only around 20-30Hz.

intel and possibly any driver: Press WinKey+S or WinKey+W rapidly to
trigger the expo/workspace animations. These are full-screen
  animations. But are they silky-smooth?

Now turn Sync To VBlank off and repeat the above steps again. If you
notice the animations are much smoother than with Sync To VBlank on
then you are suffering from this bug.

  ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION:

  Package: fglrx
  Version: 2:8.840-0ubuntu2

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Juniper
  [Radeon HD 5700 Series]

I have ATI's 5770 with fglrx. Having Sync to Vblank on makes Unity
and many Compiz features (Enhanced Zoom, Scale etc.) really slow.
Turning Sync to Vblank off has a huge effect on desktop,
responsiveness is much, much better. Turning tearing off/on from
amdccle doesn't seem to have any effect on responsiveness.

In Maverick Sync to Vblank was off by default, in Natty it's on.
This will probably have a huge impact on many fglrx users.
