I was getting similar behaviour in emacs, but I can't now seem to reproduce it. The bug does not affect gnome-terminal, by the way... If the emacs behaviour shows up again I'll take a screenshot. Very odd. The first 10 or 12 letters on the line seem immune from this behaviour, and moving the cursor backwards over the letter removes the lines, but skipping to the front of the line and moving over the letters again forward doesn't remove them. Both in xterm and emacs. I presume this isn't actually an xterm thing, but something to do with xorg?
