[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 956071] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGSEGV in XIGetDeviceProperty()

2012-08-02 Thread Scott Howard
Look around the internet, I may have found what appears to be upstream
reports:

Debian:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=681796

Xorg:
http://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/11531/

Debian is showing this SIGSEV:
XIChangeDeviceProperty (dev=dev@entry=0x7f4bac237fa0, property=optimized out,
type=type@entry=19, format=format@entry=8, mode=optimized out, mode@entry=0,
len=len@entry=1,
value=value@entry=0x7fff092e860f, sendevent=sendevent@entry=1) at
../../Xi/xiproperty.c:772

And Xorg claims:
is reporting a memory leak:

Error: Memory leak (CWE 401)
Memory leak of pointer 'prop' allocated with XICreateDeviceProperty(property)
at line 774 of Xi/xiproperty.c in function 'XIChangeDeviceProperty'.
'prop' allocated at line 700 with XICreateDeviceProperty(property).
prop leaks when handler != NULL at line 768
  and handler-SetProperty != NULL at line 769
  and checkonly != 0 at line 772
  and rc != 0 at line 772.

I'll forward this info to Debian and see what they say.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 956071] possible memory leak causing x.org crash?

2012-08-02 Thread Scott Howard
I am not too familiar with this bug, but I can across a recent patch
[1] to x.org to fix a memory leak in XICreateDeviceProperty(), around
the same lines where this crash is happening.

Error: Memory leak (CWE 401)
Memory leak of pointer 'prop' allocated with XICreateDeviceProperty(property)
at line 774 of Xi/xiproperty.c in function 'XIChangeDeviceProperty'.
'prop' allocated at line 700 with XICreateDeviceProperty(property).
prop leaks when handler != NULL at line 768
  and handler-SetProperty != NULL at line 769
  and checkonly != 0 at line 772
  and rc != 0 at line 772.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 642831] Re: Wrong monitor resolution chosen after upgrading from maverick alpha to beta

2010-10-06 Thread Scott Howard
Fixed with updates last night, it may be a G-D-M, gnome-settings-daemon
issue... Setting to Invalid since we don't exactly know what fixed it.
If the problem persists for the others, please reset this bug to
confirmed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 642831] [NEW] [R350] Wrong monitor resolution chosen after upgrading from maverick alpha to beta

2010-09-19 Thread Scott Howard
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

My monitor is natively 1440x900, and this was properly detected in all
previous releases and the alphas for 10.10. The most recent updates,
however, cause my monitor to default to 1280x1024. I changed the monitor
setting in the gnome control panel so that it will at least go to
1440x900 after logging into gnome, but the log-in screen still shows the
wrong resolution

This is the settings that it is loading as:
show...@s-desktop:~$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1280 x 1024, maximum 1440 x 1440
VGA-0 connected 1280x1024+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 408mm
x 255mm
   1440x900 59.9 +
   1280x1024 75.0*60.0
   1280x960 60.0
   1152x864 75.0
   1024x768 75.0 70.1 60.0
   832x62474.6
   800x60072.2 75.0 60.3 56.2
   640x48075.0 72.8 66.7 59.9
   720x40070.1
DVI-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
S-video disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

but it should be choosing 1440x900 (and had in the past)

while the symptoms are identical to bug 541501, the upgraded kernel does
not fix my bug. I also have a desktop, not a thinkpad.

Loading without KMS is working as a work around for now.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 557814] Re: [R350] Transient screen tearing/corruption/waviness in lucid when using KMS

2010-05-04 Thread Scott Howard
It didn't go away with updates, but I refrained from adding more
comments until I debugged it. I have tested it with KMS off, and the
screen is perfect. I've been toggling the setting over the course of the
past week to ensure that is the problem. I've tried the xorg-edgers ppa
and the newest mainline kernel, but the bug still persists.

Setting back to triaged and adding the linux package.

-
- Nothing can get rid of it.
-
- Sometimes I boot and there is no problem at first, but after a few
- minutes the screen is unreadable. Screen captures and remote logins via

2010-05-04 Thread Scott Howard
I have this bug, reported as duplicate bug #557814.

I have found that the screen shivering is still present in:
$ uname -a

I loaded as far back as:
Linux 2.6.32-15-generic #22-Ubuntu SMP x86_64 GNU/Linux

and the tearing is still present, although there was no tearing back
when -15 was the newest kernel.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 413168] Re: Karmic upgrade not shutting off backlight after time

2009-09-28 Thread Scott Howard
This is an important bug, are we sure it is fix released? So far all comments
have been from people testing the PPA. From Loic's comments:
Closing the GPM task as things work for me with the patched xorg-server which
I just uploaded; needs to be reviewed by release team still

I don't think it has been released yet, we are still waiting for the
release team to approve it. If I'm wrong, please correct me.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 413168] Re: Karmic upgrade not shutting off backlight after time

2009-09-23 Thread Scott Howard
I think multiple bugs are getting mixed together.
See bug 397839.

According to Bryce at that bug report, xorg has been properly patched
with both patches that Richard Hughes requests.

gnome-power-manager is at a version where its fix is included.

So xorg says the bug is invalid since they have the patches and
gnome-power-manager says the bug in in xorg.

From the number of reports that are coming in on both bugs, it appears
that the reality is that DPMS and blanking problems do remain.

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Upon upgrade from ibex-jaunty-karmic yesterday, I'm finding
gnome-power-manager is shutting off the display after the timed interval as
it used to.  I have tried a recursive-unset on gpm and resetting the timeout
value to no benefit.  Launching gpm in verbose shows nothing before/after the
timeout period.  Possibly relate is the screensaver is also not coming on
after the set interval, so possibly something is preventing both from
 becoming idle.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 397839] Re: Screen randomly goes off in karmic

2009-09-13 Thread Scott Howard
@mac: that warning was placed in to see if the conditions causing the
idle were still occuring in x. The author of GPM believes that the three
patches should have fixed it (and ubuntu has the three patches), but if
you are seeing the warnings, that means the bugs still remains in x
somewhere.

I don't know enough about x to help though. Does anyone else still see
this? You can try posting a response on Richard's blog, the GPM mailing
list, or a bug report saying that all patches have been applied, you
aren't getting blanking, but you are getting the warning (is that
correct?). It may be that the warning should be just removed.

@sergio and matt:
bug 385633 doesn't point here, it points to bug 413168. Could you check that
out and see if it describes your problem? If those two bugs are different
(413168 and 385633), please un-duplicate the bug and add your information.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 397839] Re: Screen randomly goes off in karmic

2009-09-11 Thread Scott Howard
To check to see if it is a gnome-power-manager bug:
1) killall gnome-power-manager
2) gnome-power-manager --verbose

when the blanking occurs, look at the last lines from the terminal to
see if GPM emitted anything that would cause the monitor to blank. If
nothing is shown, then the blanking is being called from something
else.

You can monitor the dbus:

$ dbus-monitor --session
type='signal',interface='org.freedesktop.PowerManagement'
$ dbus-monitor --session
type='signal',interface='org.freedesktop.DeviceKit.Power

(I think karmic uses DKP only and not PowerManagement, so the first
one might not work).

After the blanking, see if there are any messages in the terminal that
would indicate what happened.

Since some people have this fixed and others do not, it might be an
x/video card interaction problem.
Thanks for the help!

2009-08-31 Thread Scott Howard
From comment #22, we needed 3 patches: 2 for xorg and 1 for GPM. GPM's
patch was applied with 2.7.91-0ubuntu1 (that's why I put GPM to fixed
released). One of xorg's was applied with 2:1.6.3-1ubuntu2.

xorg-server still needs this patch:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 397839] Re: Screen randomly goes off in karmic

2009-08-23 Thread Scott Howard
Sorry, I should have been more clear!
According to richard hughes, we need 3 patches. Two in xserver and one in GPM.
the patch 182_negative_sync_transitions.patch, which is in Ubuntu's xorg-server
package now applies one of the two x patches. That leaves the following x patch:
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/patch/?id=6b5978dcf1f7ac3ecc2f22df06f7000f360e2066
and the following gnome-power-manager patch:
http://git.gnome.org/cgit/gnome-power-manager/patch/?id=b6ea044d3b67087ef2fd73f4647d7c5b2d17f8c8

However, part of the gnome-power-manager patch removes a commit which we
do not have in 2.27.5, so the patch might need to be altered a bit.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 397839] Re: Screen randomly goes off in karmic

2009-08-12 Thread Scott Howard
I'm going to be away, but I want to make sure the information is here on LP on
this bug:
From the author of gnome-power-manager, Richard Hughes:

There's no bug in gnome-power-manager, and I suspect gnome-session
somehow triggers this bug. There's a full writeup in
http://blogs.gnome.org/hughsie/2009/07/30/accidental-blanking-and-gnome-
power-manager/ but I've got next-to-no help in debugging gnome-session
or the XSync alarms stuff.

From fedora's bug report:

Comment #66 From Peter Hutterer 2009-08-11 00:26:46 EDT ---

seems to be a problem with the X server. on an F11 box, running
xorg-x11-server-1.6.2 reproduces the problem (with the test program), running
master doesn't.

Unfortunately bisecting from 1.6 to now is a dependency hell, I haven't found
the culprit yet.

--- Comment #67 From Peter Hutterer 2009-08-11 02:55:13 EDT ---

bisected to commit 57aff88c7d0761e590806d07bee1c9410680c89f in the X server
tree.
Note that this commit _fixed_ the bug (accidentally too, I suppose).

http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/commit/?id=57aff88c7d0761e590806d07bee1c9410680c89f

Moving over to the server.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 410829] Re: Pressing Suspend key turns off display instead of suspending

2009-08-12 Thread Scott Howard
Thanks for debugging this. I'm also adding xorg to this bugreport since
it appears something in X is intercepting the keyevent and blanking the
screen. Could you do the following:

Paste in output of: lspci -nn | grep VGA
Attach /var/log/Xorg.0.log

To triagers/developers:
1) xev is showing the key press event for XF86Suspend.
2) with no GPM running, the screen is turned off on keypress
3) on key press with GPM running, GPM does not tell screen is turned off, but
it turns off anyways

I killed GPM and the bug did not show up (I tested for an hour).
Usually it shows up after ~10 minutes and sometimes multiple times an
hour.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 397839] Re: Screen randomly goes off in karmic

2009-08-05 Thread Scott Howard
Thanks for the report. Could you kill GPM right after loading into
gnome and see if the screen blanking happens later on in the session?

command in terminal:
killall gnome-power-manager

I'm experiencing the same bug and wanted to see if it is related to:
http://blogs.gnome.org/hughsie/2009/07/30/accidental-blanking-and-gnome-power-manager/
bug #387529
commit:
http://git.gnome.org/cgit/gnome-power-manager/commit/?id=b5cf34d4b9861ab916a3ff74a2a08093ccb75b9f

If the bug remains after killing GPM, it appears to be related to the
above blog posting in that there is a bug in gnome-session.

Thanks for your help finding the logs! Assigning to xorg-server, confirmed
since logs are in comment #2. Just so you know, this section of Launchpad is
primarily used to help diagnose and correct programming errors in the
development release of Ubuntu, and is nearly entirely maintained by volunteers.
If you have specific hardware configuration problems that you would like fix in
the current stable release, please also look at the answers section and the
forums.
Thanks again, and please post any additional bugs that you find!

+ Second monitor (DVI) doesn't wake up after power save mode

** Description changed:

I just upgraded my media center to Intrepid via a clean install, and
there's a strange problem with powering down the displays.

  Hardware:
Foxconn 6150BK8MC-KRSHN2 Socket 939 Motherboard (onboard video, one VGA and
one DVI)
  Samsung LNT3253HX 32 LCD HDTV

I'm using the nvidia-glx-177 restricted drivers, and have my screens
setup with the attached xorg.conf (generated by nvidia-settings).

The HDTV is plugged into the DVI port and set up as the second display
(within a single X server). There is a smaller LCD plugged into the VGA
port and set up as the primary display.

After 5 minutes of inactivity, both screens go into powersave mode as
expected. When I press a key or wiggle the mouse to wake it up, the
small LCD (primary screen) wakes up, but the HDTV stays dark and
  continues to say No signal.

If I restart X with control-alt-backspace, the HDTV immediately wakes up
and works fine until the system turns it off.

I'm not sure if this is an issue with the nvidia driver or with the X
server itself, so I'm not able to assign this to a specific package. I
was unable to find a similar bug reported elsewhere.

For what it's worth, I have a similar setup on another computer (same
driver, similar xorg), but with a PCI-E video card and two DVI monitors
and that does not exhibit this problem.

development release - Karmic Koala. It would help us greatly if you
could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next
release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release
at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/. Thanks again and we appreciate your
help.

You can try the Ubuntu Studio liveCD for Karmic Koala as well.

If the bug still exists in Karmic, you can follow X-debugging instructions at:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Debugging

You could also use a linux liveCD to access your hard drive and attach the
following files to this report:
 /var/log/Xorg.0.log
~/.xsession-errors

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 373297] Re: Layout options not honored for second keyboard

2009-06-16 Thread Scott Howard
Hi again, thanks for your additional information.

xkeyboard-config is the package for the part of the x.org server that
handles keyboard configuration in general, including multiple
localization layout.

Please see Bug #295990 and check if that is a duplicate of your bug. If
it is, please add any additional information and mark this one as a
duplicate.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 374590] Re: Some games using 3D-acceleration don't work on Jaunty with ATI chipsets

2009-05-27 Thread Scott Howard
If you are interested in patching (or fixing this bug), check out this link:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/HowToFix

Also, join #ubuntu-bugs or #ubuntu-motu on IRC (freenode), and ask any
questions you have.

Ubuntu's IRC channels (and instructions on how to use IRC) are found at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/InternetRelayChat.

What most likely will happen to this bug:
1) someone at X.org will fix this bug
2) the fix will be incorporated into a future version of the drivers from X.org
3) Debian will package the future version from X.org
4) Ubuntu will import Debian's package

If you'd like to help with the process, follow the instructions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/HowToFix, post your patch here, and
subscribe ubuntu-universe-sponsors (as described in the HowToFix wiki
page). It also would be helpful to get your patch into Debian. Ask
around on #ubuntu-motu for help with that.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 371420] Re: Video corruption after 9.04 upgrade

2009-05-27 Thread Scott Howard
Thanks for finding that, I'm going to make this new and update the
title/description. Someone more familiar with SIS can pick this up if it
continues or more users sees this problem.

** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-sis (Ubuntu)
   Status: Incomplete = New

** Summary changed:

- Video corruption after 9.04 upgrade
+ [Jaunty upgrade] Video corruption when choosing 32MB of shared video RAM

** Description changed:

- I'm only a Ubuntu user. I'm not a specialist. I use Ubuntu since 6.06,
always accepting the upgrades for new versions, without any troubles, up to the
8.04. When I tried the upgrade to 8.10, most of pictures (images, photos,
films, the original wallpaper that apears the shadow of the monkey, etc.) was
contaminated by a lot of red micropoints, mainly at the lines of the details
of the picture (for instance, going around the monkey shadow).
- Two heavy users of Linux tried to help me without success.
- I've also tried the option of a new instalation of the sistem without
success. When I decided to reinstall the 8.04 the image troubles desapeared.
- I thought that with 9.04 the trouble should desapear but it has continued.
+ When I tried the upgrade to 8.10, most of pictures (images, photos,

+
+ After upgrading to 9.04, the bug came back.
+
+ I have 768 RAM memory. I decided to see these configurations in the
+ setup of the laptop. I could see that the video memory I could use 16,
+ 32 or 64MB and it was configurated to 32MB and I changed to the top,
+ 64MB and the graphic memory could use 32, 64 or 128MB and I did the
+ same, changed to the top, 128MB. After that, the problems desapeared.
+ The images became perfect.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 363326] Re: Brightness control doesn't work on Amilo mini UI 3520

2009-05-26 Thread Scott Howard
Hello again,

Doing some research [1, 2], I found that Amilo laptops do not actually
pass events through X and ACPI. Unfortunately, upstream has already
determined that this won't be fixed. I'm linking the upstream bug in
case something else comes up again. Thank you for the report and please
report any additional bugs your find.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 363326] Re: Brightness control doesn't work on Amilo mini UI 3520

2009-05-22 Thread Scott Howard
Thanks for the update.
For troubleshooting hotkeys, see:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Hotkeys/Troubleshooting

As a first step, do the following steps:
1) From a terminal, enter:
xev | sed -n 's/^.*state \([0-9].*\), keycode *\([0-9]\+\) *\(.*\), .*$/keycode
\2 = \3, state = \1/p'
2) press the brightness control key combination
3) post the output here (see if there is a keypress event)

I'm doing some housecleaning and assigning to:
gnome-power-manager
xserver-xorg-input-evdev

and removing Ubuntu

Also, I think the convention on launchpad is to subscribe teams when
escalation is required and to assign to: individuals when they are
working on the fix. Since escalation isn't required yet and no one is
working on a fix, I'm removing Ubuntu Laptop Team.
