2010-05-02 Thread StefanF
I have the same problem on an ATI mobility M6. How can I disable KMS?
What is KMS?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 413665] Re: xorg nearly 80% CPU load since 9.0.4

2009-08-19 Thread StefanF
I read both sites, but did not find any hint there that solved my
problem. The problem occurs also when simply booting the Kubunty CD,
therefore I thought that providing a list of running applications and
daemons was not necessary. I also wrote that killed everything that I
can kill, leaving only a minimum KDE desktop remaining.

The reportbug command was not useful in my case because the computer was
so slow that I was not able to get the internet connection working.
Therefore I had to write the bug ticket manually on another computer
with a working Ubuntu installation.

What additional info do you need?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 413665] [NEW] xorg nearly 80% CPU load since 9.0.4

2009-08-14 Thread StefanF
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg

On my older notebook, xorg.org uses 80% of CPU time when I open the KDE
start menu, open windows, move windows, use scrollbars (any action that
changes things on the screen).

I used debian Lenny before, the problem started since Upgrade to Ubuntu
9.0.4. The problem occurs also when I simply boot the Kubuntu CD.

All X programs are affected, even browsing through a manual page using
the man command within a konsole window is terrible slow (1-3 seconds
for each screen update).

When I switch to text mode (Ctrl-F1) while KDE is running in background,
the performance is absolutely normal and the idle CPU load is 1-5%. When
I run top in a konsole window, the CPU load jumps up to 80%
permanently. When I monitor the CPU load using KDE system monitor, the
CPU load is permanently at 100%.

When I stop all service taht I can stop and kill all programs that I can
kill, the problem does not change.

I also tried the xorg.conf from debian that is known to work fine. I
created this file manually, so that no autodetection is used. But this
did not make any difference to the default file which is reduced to the
minimum required lines.

This computer has a Pentium M processar at 1200 Mhz, 512MB Ram and an
ATI Radeon chipset which is supported by the xorg radeon driver.

I assume that debugging could be simple because the problem occurs also
on the CD version with all of its default settings while not accessing
the harddisk at all. But I have no idea what I can do.

** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New
